I can’t thank you enough for sharing these memories, it’s honestly the closest I can get to a time machine. I always wanted to get a Dreamcast as a kid and it’s the one major console I never got. It’s incredible the amount of time I spent dreaming of getting one. Having one before the US release must have felt like you unlocked the future, I remember how jaw dropping the graphics were back then
@CRAZYCANUCKTV Жыл бұрын
The graphics are still very unique to other consoles. I still play dreamcast and it's unbelievable how ahead of its time it really was. I still think those games hold up to today and aged very well. The feeling you get when you play it is unlike any other. If you thought the Dreamcast was awesome, you should check out the Sega Naomi arcades!! I wish Sega never stopped making consoles but I truly think no other console launch has equalled the amount of hype the dreamcast did!

It changed everything: My first system was a Famiclone, which I got in '98 or '99. The very first game I played in the built-in list was Yie Ar Kung-Fu. Among others that stuck with me the most were Super Mario Bros. ; Circus Charlie; Tiny Toon Adventures; TMNT; Lode Runner... My friend since '98 had a PS1 with Tekken 3 and several demos, so that exposure was a big jump in tech. Now imagine going from that world to the Christmas of 2000 with a Dreamcast! Firstly, I popped in the Dream On Vol.2 demo disc: Rayman 2: The Great escape, a "real 3D" world running at a locked 60 fps. Immediately after that, I booted the bundled-in Sonic Adventure: Between the vibrant colors, the blinding sun at Emerald Coast and that camera close-up on Sonic just before the first boss battle, it impressed me even more than Rayman did. But what really made my balls prematurely drop at 8-years-old, was Shenmue. That game helped me tremendously in learning English, as well as making me perceive Japanese culture beyond the Anime archetype to which I'd been exposed to in my baby years (Dragon Ball). I'd wager that one of the greatest elements in that game's design shows itself in this exact circumstance: A kid with a very basic notion of a foreign language, being able to gather clues through raw exploration, to complete the journey without any outside help, be it guides; magazines; or an older family member of friend. Aside from Shenmue and Shenmue II being my all-time favorites of any system, there's: Skies Of Arcadia; Jet Set Radio; Capcom vs. SNK; Street Fighter Alpha 3; Soul Calibur; Sonic Adventure 1 & 2; Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2; Spider-Man; Sega Extreme Sports; Metropolis Street Racer.

There really isn't a big leap in graphical detail when new consoles come out, there's not much more that can be done with console tech (we have had the internet and pretty much every major media component included in game consoles since '99-2000), online shopping has killed the launch day wait outside the store... I mean, look at the difference in gaming from 1980 to 2000. Almost a leap in light-years. The difference between 2000 and 2020 is not that major. Halo CE from 2001 is still a totally enjoyable game in 2021, 20 years later. Games on Atari in 1980 were leap-frogged by the NES so drastically, a mere 5 years later, that they were almost unplayable.
@m.l.6792 жыл бұрын
1982 here. I feel the same. NES was huge, SNES was Mindblowing, PS1/N64 omg .. PS2/Dreamcast O_O!!!! Then it started to go downhill with little to no innovation. For those with PC those years saw games like DOOM, Diablo, C&C, Starcraft, Unreal Tournament etc. Arcades where still going strong with releases like Daytona USA, MK, Killer Instinct, SF2, Konami TMNT .. Those were golden years.

My brother imported our Dreamcast from Japan the back end of 1998 (it may have even been the launch) and it blew us away the House of the Dead 2, Sonic Adventure, Sega Rally 2 & Soul Calibur that come out on launch or soon thereafter and it was awesome. I have watched tons of retro unboxing videos on youtube, and they've never really bought back memories for me. Until I seen your Xbox original day one video, that your dad got as you came home from school. The flood gates of memories came back so hard that I almost started to cry. Not only are there things I remember from the video game console that is shown, but I look at things in your house that I remember being in my home or my friends houses in the 90's, early 2000s. At lot of your videos (the playstation one hit very hard)just brings back so many great memories from the days before social media, the days when you had to read a gaming magazine to find out about the hot new tech coming out. It's so insane, i can't believe you have unboxing videos from the 90s. Im very glad that you share this all for us to see. The one I got didn’t have all the cables so I wasn’t able to play it and they ended up junking it later on. Despite that it sewed the seeds for an immense fascination for the system and I remember learning all I could about it and it made me really want one. I finally got one on Christmas last year and I absolutely fell in love. This is such a great system and I’ll always remember it fondly. I am truly grateful for that memory of when I was a gamer and this was when I had the ability in my hands, I was a gamer from the 90s until 2008, You see because of my disability I lost the strength in my hands and I could no longer play video games and that taught me to never take beautiful memories like that for granted. on Christmas 2000 I had more Dreamcast games added to my library, I got Shenmue, Jet Grind Radio and Royal Rumble.

I also wasn’t aware of the voltage difference but luckily never had a console failure because of it but I always wondered why some would get incredibly hot to the touch and my white Saturn actually turned yellow only in the location above the internal power supply as a result of the high temperatures. Now I of course use a stepdown converter. 👍

These are the kinds of memories people would pay to have, like in Total Recall.

This footage is priceless treasure to this man. What foresight some people have to document their lives in this depth. I'm lucky if 10 photos of me as a kid exist in the world. And this guys parents flexed for him hardcore. I hope that he's paying them back with love in their golden years. 🍻 And thank you so much for sharing this.

Your dad was an amazing human being and his light shines through all of these videos sometimes I come here not to only learn about the past and what made the consoles and Relics I now collect as a 19 year old so breath-taking but to also receive a chuckle or two from your father sometimes I need that and he always knows how to make you laugh rest in peace ❤

Tyler, clearly your Dad was a very special man. You and I are nearly the same age. I am a little older. I think I was 12 when the SNES came out and I got it for Christmas. I would have killed for a Dad that was that enthusiastic about my interests and my happiness to that extent. All that is to say, I think your Dad was a obviously a huge part of your “Retro Life”, and although I know it would be super emotionally difficult to even make the video, I think your Dad deserves his own video. He was clearly awesome and loved you very much.

I always feel a sense of nostalgia from your wonderful videos. They’re like a virtual time machine. Different families and friends but the same emotions are strummed up where I remember my own experiences as a kid. Thanks a lot Tyler. It’s not really just about the games. It’s the people. The experience of youth in the 90s. Brilliant content and always a touching tribute to your dad who captured these moments for you. Thanks for sharing them.

I got mine on launch with Sonic Adventure, Power Stone, and Ready-2-Rumble. My absolute favorite system of all time. I remember riding my bike to Toys R’ Us everyday leading up to the launch. Thank you for sharing this, it brings back some very fond memories.

The Sega Dreamcast was (and still is) the unsung hero of videogame consoles. It was the singular most significant turning point between the industry’s past and its future. Everything we treat as standard now - onboard online capability, arcade-perfect-or-better ports, PC-based system architecture - it all started being a standard with the advent of the Sega Dreamcast.

Love this video! I was a senior in high school on 9.9.99 and the Dreamcast was my first day one console purchase ever🙌🏾. Just became a dad and hoping to create some of these moments one day in the future ❣️

I can remember slowly getting older and searching the back of every game for the two player symbol and the trickery with the two player online only symbols. I just wanted to play with the people in the room with me 😂.
