I was REALLY torn between the 7700X and the 13700K, and I decided not to wait for Raptor Lake's launch and pulled the trigger on the 7700X. These benchmarks confirm that I did make the right choice. Basically the two chips trade blows from game to game, but all while the 7700X consuming A LOT LESS power :) Using the Curve Optimizer and setting some PBO limits, I have the 7700X running at 5.5Ghz on all cores almost at all time, all while consuming under 89W and at less than 69C. I would NEVER be able to achieve this performance with the 13700K.

Lmao, bruh. The 13700K destroys it. Unless you ment the 7900X? Hate to say it but you clearly made the wrong choice. $399 from Microcenter for a 13700K is crazy value. 7700X is probably the worst in AMDs line up for value to performance. It's like comparing a 12700K to a 5800X, the 12700K is clearly the better CPU but was more expensive. Now they are relatively the same price w/ a 13700K & 7700X. No one in their right mind is picking a 7700X over a 13700K unless it's a 6 liter or under SFF build. In the same way no one is going to pick a 7600X over a 13600K (the 12600K competed in price & performance against a 5800X). AMD is literally one SKU lower in value & performance against both the 13700K & 13600K.

Actually, things are a bit more complicated. The power consumption you're seeing is only limited to high MT productivity loads. In gaming, the i9-13900K runs at 120W average, NOT 300W. The i7-13700K will draw even less. In idle and/or light loads like web browsing and Office tasks, the i9-1300K is MORE efficient than the Ryzen 7000 series because in this case it only uses its E cores, not P cores. So overall, averaging over normal usage (idle + light tasks + gaming + heavy productivity loads) the 13th gen Intel CPUs and the Ryzen 7000 are comparable.

I loved the comparisons with the Memory in the charts. This has been the 1 single sticking point to my decision on a total platform upgrade this year (hopefully barring availability of parts). I now feel that going with a DDR5 system will be my best approach and it gives me at least 1 component that will remain valid in the 2 to 3 years before my next upgrade. I was debating the 13900K, and with the ability to power limit the CPU to 180W (a power target I think will be adequate), to get a decent priced top performer. This review has changed my mind and the 13700K I feel is going to be the sweet spot for me. Cheers! Stay Healthy and Stay Sane!

Not to mention that when they drop the 7000X3D, which we know from the 5800X3D will absolutely crush Intel and AMD's other offerings in gaming, you don't have to replace anything. Same thing for 9000 series. Meanwhile, 14th gen Intel will require a new MoBo. So, unless you already own an LGA1700 Mobo buying into the LGA1700 for just 13th gen is a terrible decision. Buy AM5, get most of the performance with less power consumption, then get another 2 generations of CPUs worth of upgrades on the same platform.
@RokuX51
@RokuX51 Жыл бұрын
@@rustler08 idk about that. Waste of money to upgrade CPU in just 2 or even 3 generations. If you buy 13th gen now or current zen 4 / 7000x3d you shouldn't really need to upgrade your CPU anymore until AM6 is out anyways. So just buy what you think is the best rn and not what you want to spend more money on a CPU on in just a few years. So the lga1700 being on the last year doesn't really matter. 11 days later and the 13700K is at 469 GBP so 60 GBP saving for just waiting a few days...for games the power is roughly the same and with running at stock on pro workloads offset against the performance to power again it even outs as both can be undervolted/power limited if required. Even with rising power cost and yes living in the UK it has gone up steeply but now capped and hopefully they get ther act together and start building some mixed (nuclear/solar/wind etc) power generation things should be okay oh and hoefully the war in Ukraine ends! but overall the additional power usage over a year would be miniscule between the 2 CPU's...The real bonus on Ryzen 7000 is the AM5 platform longevity...

In my country, the equation (saving x energy cost) could offset the price difference between 13700K and 7900X in 18 months, give or take. The big problem right now is motherboard price, because AM5 is way expensive and there are not (at least in Brazil) any reasonable option available. I'd say both are very good options, but I still think AMD is a safer bet due to socket life span.

It really depends what you do. At idling and light loads (web browsing and Office) the 13700K is more efficient than the 7900X because it does all these with its E cores while the P cores are inactive. In gaming the 13700K probably draws around 100W only (with a 4090 the 13900K averaged 120W in gaming at 1080p). If you ran a gaming test in realistic conditions (ie, GPU bottleneck at something like 1440p or 4K), CPU consumption will be quite low. You can even limit the CPU to 90W and you won't see a difference in most cases. kzbin.info/www/bejne/emLQk4CdZ82djtU

It's worth noting that *part* of the added power draw between the 13700K and 13900K are going to be from the RTX 4090 which is less CPU bottlenecked with the 13900K, and therefore has higher GPU load, causing an increase in power draw. It would be nice to have CPU-only power numbers as well.

I have seen this across the board with the Intel v AMD benchmarks… Why not use the same speed memory for both processors? Why is the Intel getting a faster memory clock over AMD? If they are able to run the same speed DDR5, wouldn’t that be the best test setup? With some of these results, could the clock speed of the memory make up some of the difference? AMD was using memory with about 7% slower clock speeds. Not that it would be linear gains, but worth checking?

For AMD you want 6000 MHz memory because the Infinity Fabric is running at 3000 MHz and 6000 MHz memory allows for a 1:1 ratio. (DDR => DOUBLE Data Rate so 6000 Mhz memory matches 3000 Mhz Fabric speed.) Going faster than that and you might have to switch to a 1:2 ratio, actually lowering performance. Meanwhile with Intel you benefit from going beyond 6000 Mhz. So HBU is doing the sensible thing here and is running both systems under "ideal" conditions.

Also, I get the timing’s argument and that they are about equal… But why not make them the same clocks and remove any possible impacts to results? Or, show a couple benchmarks with the faster memory speed and prove there is no difference before proceeding with all the other results. It’s casting doubt. Testing should be as clear as possible. The companies themselves are caught with mis matched test benches for their presentation tables…

Depends in what you're doing. Games benefit from faster ram because they're constantly fetching a lot of data. So if you do scene rendering, for example, then it would probably benefit from faster ram, because it's constantly fetching high poly models etc. But if you're doing calculations/simulations then probably not as much. You can probably test this on your machine by manually underclocking the ram and testing the effect. Won't be a definitive answer, but might be an indication.

Thanks Steve, I agree for the vast majority of AM4 owners a gpu upgrade for gaming or even light production work a low cost cpu upgrade will do the job while saving money on the build cost and energy bills this winter going forward. Let's face facts fossil fuel energy costs will only continue to rise as sources become harder to come by and the climate keeps wrecking our lives around the world. Every little bit of savings helps, even if your only concern is your wallet.

Great review, but I was wondering why you didn't test the same RAM kits for Ryzen 7000 and 13th gen. Also it would be great to see when the 13700K is downclocked to 12900K level, would they perform identical, cos my 12900K at 5.2-5.4GHz, E core at 4.1 and cache at 4.4 actually perform better in Cinebench R23 than the 13700K

Apparently it was AMD's recommendation when they were launched. To test the CPUs with the kit they recommended. Why? I don't quite know, I also asked yesterday why they didn't use the same kit. I mean, 7000 launch has passed and they can tweak the tests. It would be interesting to see if the faster ram delivers better results or not. I don't think they'll be significant enough to make a difference but at least would be square.

Great video as always :) looking forward to the 13600K review... One thing I'm missing though is power consumption while gaming. Power is getting really expensive here in Europe, so it's important in the total cost. Since gaming will usually not stress all cores the way a render will, I'm wondering if Intel is still going to be using so much more there. Of course, ideal would be to also try to limit the power consumption of both platforms and find a sweet spot, maybe even undervolting, but of course that is very time consuming...
@Quxer0721
@Quxer0721 Жыл бұрын
This is going to be interesting for span of this generation of CPUs. We see nice performance from intel and for now better value, if you have some other parts or have tight budget. For me it is not that obvious, cause I don't own PC for more than a decade, I'm just using laptops for that time. So now I'm waiting for a good time and deal to buy PC. For me it is hard to choose, cause I game a little, do some coding and browsing Internet. So for me it would be best going for ryzen 7 or i7 and midium shelf grafics card. One thing I don't like nowadays is high power consumption and I would love to see benchmarks with capping CPUs and GPUs at optimal power consumption to get efficient FPS in games. Der8auer showed interesting benchmarks for 4090 not long ago, where capping power usage at 60-70% can still get about 90% of performance. This is huge and I would love to see benchmarks, where we would determine that sweet spot for CPUs and GPUs and then pair them to see almost real life scenarios. As someone said in comments power consumption is a big factor for a lot of people right now. CPUs with 250+ W and GPUs with 500+ W and adding rest of components make a lot of consumption. I know this data is for high end components, but we see intel isn't much efficient under workload. I would love to see other power tests like idle, light workload (like watching movies, browsing internet, etc.). It would be interesting, cause under workload they might be higher, but maybe they are more efficient on day to day basis with E-cores. Then maybe we can tune those intel cpus to undervolt and underclock for E-cores to handle small tasks like browsers and music, while P-cores would work on main tasks (games, production software). To the point of price of whole rig I think AMD maybe a little worst, but prospect of upgrade in a future is a factor too. Maybe you will skip next generation, but get something 2 generation later. Next intel will be DDR5 only too, so this is hard to make comparison. If you won't buy any parts like me for 10 years, maybe it is better to buy best cost per performance now (intel probably), but if you know you would update gradually, than buy more expensive, but not on the end of life cicle parts.

I'd keep an eye out for the I5 13600K review, or look at one of the already posted reviews for it. It still gives you pretty decent performance in all the categories while being even better on price and thermals (well, at least compared to the other 13th gen CPUs 😅). I'd then use the money saved to instead grab DDR5 for a bit more future proofing
@rustler08
@rustler08 Жыл бұрын
No, you have it backwards: price as a whole rig is absolutely in favor of AMD because you can literally keep your entire setup and just upgrade the CPU on the same motherboard when 9000 and 11000 series drop. Intel's LGA1700 is dead after 13th gen, you're going to have to buy an entirely new motherboard if you want a 14th gen chip. And if you decide to buy DDR4 for your current LGA1700, then you will most likely need to buy DDR5 for that board because I don't think anyone is going to keep DDR4 going for new platforms.

For the productivity stuff I would go 5950X or 7900X because of the lower power consumption the 5950X is especially interesting in the regards. With price per kw up 300% this year it gets more and more important to have a energy efficient system. Especially in the summer if your already get hot and you need to turn on the air conditioning to cool it down again. In the winter heating the room with a heat pump is 2-3x more efficient compared to a pc putting out a lot of heat.

@Seth22087
@Seth22087 Жыл бұрын
With those CPUs, tables really turned around with overclocking, back in the day they would get clocked in range of efficiency and you could overclock them to get more performance at expense of much bigger power consumption. Now you get them to boost way past efficiency curve to what was overclocking territory and you actually have to undervolt them to get back to most efficient spot. Though AMD has this covered way better with "eco" mode. While on Intel from what I saw you have to punch in your own limit. Also I would love to see HUB after reviews making whole power scaling video for Raptor Lake lineup, so we can see around where you get to the point where you need big power increase for few percent more performance. Like graph of at certain watt limit, how much performance do you get for every like 20-25W increase. Because I do believe you can run Raptor Lake way less hot while losing single digit percent of performance, due to lower power limit.

Some quick math to put cost to the additional power consumption: Assumptions: 100W additional load, likely varies but this is a simplification 10 hours gaming per week for 52 weeks/yr $0.15/kWh electrical rate Cooling season = 60% of the year rest = heating Average Cooling Efficiency of 1 KW/ton Average Heating Efficiency = 94% and uses NG $1/therm for NG Computer it self will use 52 kWh/yr additional electricity; cooling system will have to use 31.2 kWh/yr more; heating system will use 0.76 therm/yr less. Net, electrical bill will be $12.5 more per year, NG bill will be -$0.75 less. Running the intel system without tuning will cost roughly $12/yr more than the AMD too operate given these assumptions. This completely ignores idle comparisons etc. Will vary by region and facility, but hope this provides some insight.

These are for our guidance, just use the results the best way you can.
