Great! Serbs with Vlachs could form a new DLC, e.g. named "Battles of the Balkans". And also can add Venetians to this, since they were quite active on the Balkans! Can be an ultimate water map civ. Venetians provide so much room for concepts, like fishing generates some gold, etc. Their unique building could be a sea tower, that could be built by fishing ships anywhere on water. The unique unit for the benefit of balance could be on land - Stratioti (mercenary balkan light cavs).
@Animazione_2438 Жыл бұрын
May I suggest saltworks as unique building of the Venetians, that provides gold and cost wood. I totally agree on stratioti! Furthermore I suggest more hit points for all types of ships. War galley, gallions, and other war ships can garrison archers/ arbaletiers and that adds arrows (like in garrisoned castles) providing more attack point for the ships. And uniques techs should be related to ship building or wood cutting.

The garrison mechanics could work fine for a unique ship unit, might be even turn out balanced by the fact that garrisoned unit takes up pop space

As always, absolutely love the effort that goes into these. Glad to see you back! Here's a few more detailed thoughts: -Since, as you know, the mining bonus is so similar to Bohemians, Turks, and Koreans, maybe a similar bonus that might be a little more distinctive is "Mining Camps cost just 10 Wood." This would be similar to the Japanese bonus but since camps are built a lot less than Lumber camps you can be pretty extreme with it, and this could lead to some interesting gameplay manifestations, like putting three camps around a pile for maximum efficiency, entirely walling vils in with a bunch of camps, cheaper "campwalls" for defense, etc. -Castle UU is nice. It's harder and harder to come up with truly original concepts, thanks to all the expansions, but this is a solid one. Somewhat resembles Conqs and War Wagons but has enough setting it apart to be distinct. -Castle Age UT is pretty neat, but might suffer from the standard problem of all Monk UTs, which is that castles only go up after the period where monks are useful. -Not sure how to feel about the Imp UT. There are quite a few civs out there that only have non-FU halbs for anti-cav defense; if Hussars can now basically trade evenly with those Halbs it seems totally oppressive to deal with, given Hussars are already probably the best trash unit. -Caltrops is an interesting concept and I really wonder how these would work in practice. There's just so many weird potential quirks and it would probably take even pros months or even a year to really explore how to use them. Overall, I like the idea, though price, damage, and size could all potentially be adjusted. -After you really really hyped up the team bonus, I'll admit I was surprised how normal it was! But it's a perfectly good bonus and one that is nearly inevitable in the near future, I suspect. It could even be +2 LOS for *all* SW units. -Truthfully, I think tunnels are probably too weird for me, lol. In practice, you won't be using tunnels for a sneak/sapping attack unless you get really lucky with villagers, so instead this becomes a weird gamey way to teleport slow moving archer masses around your base when on defense. Looking forward to what you come up with next!

Love your channel. Perhaps you can do Maltese next (largely because I am from there and probably would make for a fun Gunpowder/defensive civ). An unoccupied niche unit that isn't currently in the game is an infantry unit that functions sort of like an onager, essentially a grenedier type unit from AOE 3. An upgrade to the hand canoneer would also be a neat idea.
@alexmanzer57562 жыл бұрын
Love the concept. This civ seems like it would be deadly on Arena with the petards coming out of the siege workshop. I'm not sure that I'm a fan of the tunnellers however. I think that you'd have to make the travel time based on the distance from one tunnel to the other and also make it only available in later ages if it should exist at all. As for addition civ ideas, I think that you're going to have to do the Croats at some point to finish your Balkan tour given that you have done the Vlachs and Serbs already.

Attack bonus vs gunpowder units) • Imperial Galleon (powerful upgrade of the galleon with a great attack. Attack bonus against gunpowder units) Unique Technologies: • Grand Master: Stable units regenerate 20 HP per minute • Maltese Batteries: Bombard Tower attacks cause trample damage Team bonus: warships +25% attack Aragonese Naval and infantry civilization • War galley and galleon upgrades free • Trade cogs occupying only half population • Infantry and foot skirmishers regenerate Single unit: • Almogavar (quick but weak foot skirmisher unit who can charge from a distance. Bonus damage vs cavalry and camel units) Unique technologies: • Catalan company: Unlock the Almogavars in the team's archery ranges. • Almogavar tactics: skirmishers and infantry absorb 100% bonus damage and trample damage. Team bonus: foot skirmishers and infantry +2 vs cavalry and camel units

I love the concept of tunnels, but my gut feeling is that it is pretty strong as is. I think there should definitely be some delay for units to get from one hand of a tunnel to the other (that delay should be proportional to the distance between the two ends, but it should still be quicker than just walking the same distance, otherwise there's no point). Anyhow, that's also a really great tool for TGs, to send reinforcements (I assume allies can use it) or to rescue your villagers from raiding.
@quakethedoombringer Жыл бұрын
Or makes the tunnels extremely fragile, especially to siege and petards or makes them the more expensive the newer tunnels are (+ factoring distance as well). Because if your enemies keep spamming a bunch of tunnels around your base, you will have to play wack-a-mole instead of actually deploying your force. Travel time is also a huge factor because there is no way any player will accept having their enemies instantly spawn near their base

The idea is really interesting but I do want to point out that I believe the civilization has way too many gimmicks. While I do agree that it is hard to make unique stuffs, it would became a problem if there are way too many gimmicks. For example I think petard from siege workshop is a bit overkill on top of tunnels and caltorps, if I may suggest, one of them needs to go, to represent Serbs mining and tunneling, I think better way is to give the villagers extra hp and free sapper and then make them generate gold/stones when they attack buildings. Obviously that's also way too stacked for civ bonuses, so maybe it can be separated as UT or something. But overall I'm very pleased to see a well designed civs, heavy armored mounted crossbow sounds very fun and brilliant, tech tree is also well thought. I'm looking forward for next civilization idea from you.

I like the design of the vandguard. It's very unique and fun to play. I also like the siege design and the unique unit. Giving them a monky flavor is quite accurate. The tunnels are a great option but I think that they will be too strong. I have only one complain about the Serbs. When you look at some battles, you realize that their greatest weapon was the heavy knights. So I would see them with paladins or a heavy horseman unique unit.
@Fenet20002 жыл бұрын
I really like that concept. Give the tunels a "reload" time for the effect and I really like that feature. I am not sure about the UU however. CAs rely heavily on speed and you try to make the base version slower than regular CA and then give them no husbandry. I am not sure if that will work out. No champion or other strong heavy infantry/ cavalry unfortunately means that this civ has no counter to eagles. The monk healing would have to be nerfed too I think to only like 50 HP per minute, but apart from that I think this civ would be actually OK to go.

Some folk dont like the idea about Tibet civs, because one china policy, but some do not think that China will not care, because Indian civs for example divide into Dravidian, Bengalis(West Bengal and Bangladesh), Gurjaras and Hindustani(Dehlis should be real name). China should have 2 more civs Tibet and Jurchen. with new Chinese set architecture, and old east asian should go to Japanese and Ryukyuan(If they made new Fareast Asian theme concept) Jurchen/Manchu, Tibet, Ryukyu and Thai. i think these 4 Asian civs need to be add. @@theovermansailor5519 Thai could be start in Sukhothai era, Yes before Thai migrated to Khmer-Mon land and also Northern of Malay peninsular at the Kra Isthmus(Malay, Urak Lawoi and Moken, Malayic people). Thai today adopted totally Khmer culture, architecture and tradition, even thai script base on modified Khmer script. the southern thai culture/Malay peninsular base on Srivijayan and Langkasukan, the temple some of them built in old malay style, for example " Surat Thani city pillar shrine, Nakhon Si Thammarat city pillar shrine, Nakhon Si Thamarat, Khanom City Pillar Shrine Nakhon Si Thammarat and Chedi Laem Sor Pagoda in Srivijaya art Ko Samui, Surat Thani" they called as 'Sriwichai" style. In the West and Middle east they used 'Arab Syrian, Persian+ Byzantine architecture and culture. So why not Thai. i like the idea of the tunnel unique building but i think it should be a building similar to the folwark but for the mining camp where it provides a small boost to the amount of res on a mine and has the ability to garrison your vills inside to protect them. i think teleporting around the map is probably too strong and would be used to save vills in a dangerous area, making them almost impossible to raid. if you had 15 vills on a wood line that is getting cut off from your tc by archers you can just rush down a tunnel and teleport to a safer woodline it would be frustrating to play against. i like alot of the other civ design elements though seems fun and well thought out.

In my opinion this is an amazing concept, I only have a few notes: The Vanguard is a better Spearline but I think it should cost more than the regular spearline, I would think of 40f 35w, the building aspect can get pretty out of hand so adjusting the cost would be proper. I'm not sold on the imp unique tech but I don't have any ideas on how to improve it. While the teambonus is great in High level gameplay I don't think it's any use for the more casual player.

The tunnels are quite similar to the economy building of goblins in the LotR battle for middle earth 2 RTS game which was quite broken so I agree about need a lot of balance testing. Wonderful Video, such an amazing effort! Satnik- Nice concept overall, however you didn't go far enough, the stats leaves it at a very generic place, feels like a CA. Having no frame delay is nice, super micro-able, just like Kipchaks, however unlike Kipchaks these units scale into late-game perfectly (which is kinda convinient, perhaps too convinient?) anyways, it makes balance much harder, I really wanted to see them more like a Conq, highly utilizable in Castle Age rather than a Post Imperial Fantasy play. I'd give them 1 more damage, and much less "Attack Speed" in Castle Age. (perhaps leave the Elite Damage at 9) Vanguard- So what the strategic element about this unit? It simply a better version of the Spearman line all along, what the point of replacing an unit with simply a better one? Devs did the same with the Hussar and the Winged Hussar, horribly, that's not enough of a justification to make an new unit. It must have a weakness in order to be an elegant design. I'd just give them a -3 damage nerf OR a much higher wood cost. Something has to change, this is too convinient, too childish. Tunnels- Oranos of AoM. I dont think it has a place in AOE II, however it's always nice to hear some exotic ideas. The abuse potential is just too big. You can Trush with a tunnel both in the enemy and your own base, and rule the whole map. Enemy will never be able to punish you for wrong positioning. It encourages noobism. Castle Age UT- Solid idea, fits a passive bonus rather than an UT position. Just like the Slavs-Bengalis syndrome. By the point you build a Castle the small advantage you gain with regeneration becomes overly luxurious rather than meaningful. Imperial UT- Solid. A little bit over=emphasis on trash-wars. Reminds me of a design Devs would do. Castle-free Petards is a great idea. I was waiting for years for any civ to have any bonus exclusively for petards, one that will increase viability and usage. This one is great. Siege Eng in Castle Age- One of the trickiest bonuses to have. The extra range pretty much murders any composition, I don't see any possible way to make it balanced. With or without the discount. There are 2 major bottle-neck situations in Castle Age, the Castle itself, and the Mango-wars, you just gave them the best edge, the tie-breaker. The status quo cant allow that. That's btw where UU that replaces the Mango can come to place, having extra range yet much lower movement speed or much lower damage, etc.... Else, again, too convinient, no micro, just noobism. Britons and Bohemians (terrible civs in terms of design) style. Especially when considering the Team Bonus. Like why.... The TB itself is great, but why would you overkill it. it's a childish approach to design, I loved almost every previous design of yours, loved them, this one however is bad, I'm sorry. And it's not me being conservative, I do like innovation, it just has to be well implemented. That's a very devs-style of designing a civ.

I really like the video you made, but I have some problems with the things you proposed. 1. I don't agree that Serbs should have strong siege. You basically turned them into siege civ, but in reality, they haven't had much sophisticated siege machines during medieval times. In fact, I cant' think of a successful siege of a city performed by the Serbs in their entire medieval history. However, they were mostly waging defensive wars, so that would make them Defensive and Monk civ rather than a siege civ. 2. Satniks don't seem like a historically accurate unit. Serbs having strong cavalry archers that make the bulk of their cavalry is not something that is familiar to me, although I am quite knowledgeable about Serbian history. Their main forces were heavy cavalry and I think that a unique unit should be a heavy cavalry unit that has bonus against cavalry archers with high pierce armour since Serbian heavy cavalry was known to be extremely effective against Mongol-Tatar-Asian style armies. Their cavalry unique unit may also provide bonus armor and attack to nearby units, something like Captains in Stronghold Crusader II. 3. You gave them too strong of a navy. They didn't have navy at all in the medieval times, but they had Shaikas, which could be one of their unique units - a boat with the attack almost identical to a hand cannoneer. 4. As I mentioned before, Serbs should have better defenses (Fortified Walls, Strong Castles, and Towers) instead of being an offensive style played civ. They may even have a bonus that allows their castles to fire 2 volleys of arrows. 5. Also I thing them not having champions would also be partially inaccurate, but that is a bit less important. 6. Their architecture should either be the same as Slavic, or better yet, a new one. Bulgarians, Serbs and Slavs (whose name should be changed to Rus) would share it. A new architecture would make their buildings be similar to the Slavic existing one but with more wood. You can Google Serbian ethnic villages, those houses would seem cool to have in the game in my opinion. All in all, your thoughts are inspiring but I thought I could give my 5 cents (adjusted to the inflation).

Tunnel sound nice, but: 1) As You said talking about history - mercenaries, so every ally should be able to build it or even every one You play against it (mercenaries work for money, not side) except for example Bizantines cos no. 2) 2nd option is builded only by Serbs or their allies, but EVERYONE can use them if they at least once saw both sides (so it's like X player building, but also GAIA seen by everyone who had it in their LOS at least once. Same as mercenaries - tunnels doeswnt choose sides, they just have X openings available to anyone. So no option to delete it (dangerous in own base), but with an option to attack it with own units to destroy it (like its enemy building).

+ as a tunnel is not just opening, but the... tunnel as well, than the price for it should be closer to important buildings like castle, so like 400/500 wood 100/200 stone, not so little like 100/50. And why gold? It's building.

Petard gets twice attack boost against buildings with siege engineering. Which can be devastating in castle age.
@kell28592 жыл бұрын
Actually making petards viable is pretty cool

I would say make infantry immune to the caltrops and allow them to destroy them in melee. Edit: I’d also say give a range limit for the tunnels. Otherwise these are good ideas.

How to add these civs to the game?
@PurpleWarlock2 жыл бұрын
Just discovered your channel. Doubt the Swiss would have a heavy crossbowmen. They strike more of an heavy skirmisher + halberdier (lucerne hammer?) type of civ than having that focus on (xbow) archery. Anyway, hoping you can do the Danes, with a touch of Hamlet.
@PurpleWarlock2 жыл бұрын
indonesia / Jakarta would be nifty too.

Interesting concept..however it doesnt really fit AoE as many of these mechanics are too asymetrical where AoE is fairly symetrical when it comes to civ design..this reminds me of AoM. It wouldve been absolutely broken, but also absolutely fun, good video thanks!

Interesting, I think Albanians would be an interesting addition as well. I say this due to the fact that the history of Albanians is deeply rooted in tribes, patriarchal clans with common ancestry. These tribes would be semi-nomadic pastoralists and bandits, so J think they'd have interesting food and mili bonus. If you want to learn more about it I suggest reading some of the basic Wikipedia entries on Albanian tribalism and even the emergence of Albanians itself.

Get rid of the Siege Engineers thing in castle age as a civ bonus, replace with Sappers tech available in castle age and affects all infantry. Reflects the history better and should make infantry melt buildings.

I was hoping that they will add more diversity to Slavs like they did with Indians. Because it makes no sense that you have Bohemians, Poles, Bulgarians and Slavs as playable civilisations. I would split Slavs into Serbs, Croats and Rus. That way you would have all major Slavic nations from Medieval times. But they chose to go with Rome DLC which is meh in my opinion. If I wanted to play Rome I would play AOE1

The civ feels like it has some really strong options with an overstuffed set of unique units and buildings who dont do much outside of the caltrops which seem pretty overpowered against an enemy going cav (the damage they deal to cav for such a low cost is quite crazy). The unique building seems too gimmicky and weird for the game, even compared to some of the wackier stuff we have gotten lately. In general I dont like the spearman UU because it is just way too much better than generic halbs against everything. Its faster and deals slightly more damage vs cav, on melee it attacks waaaayyyy faster and they are also much tankier, they cost the same as spearmen and have caltrops too. I would remove either the Tunnels or Vanguards entirely. As I said before the early game sucks. The faster spearmen isnt bad but with such a weak economy it is kinda underwhelming and the tunnels are too expensive to be worth it in feudal. In castle age the civ still feels too weak as all their advantages are either expensive or quite situational. Also the trash is too good with the UU and imperial UT and the siege in imperial is underwhelming

1) Tunnels sounds so broken, absolutely abusable. I'd hate to play whack-a-mole with those stupid tunnels popping up at random places whenever I destroy one. 2) Even with -50%, siege engineers is too expensive in castle, where you need a lot of wood and food 3) cant understand the point of Gusar. You have arbs bruh, ideally you dont need to engage with a mass of halbs with your hussars. you can use your siege or skirms even. halbs still outdamage your hussars especially if in mass. 4) not too sure about the petard niche. I feel like it will be still unviable

Tunnels probably need to have at least twice the cost and twice the construction time. As it is, it's too easy to use one villager to sneak multiple tunnels into the back of your enemy base. Imagine all the archers teleporting around and harassing your economy, and instead of getting caught out in the open by cavalry, they go into the tunnel and all you can do is destroy a 1150hp building to make them lose 150 resources.

Monastic vows is completely OP. Also my guess is that the UU is so strong in imp it will make this civ a turtling one-trick pony... A bit like Mongols but even worse...

I think the tunnel is very gimmicky, the caltrops are ok, but both together make the civ by far the weirdest in game Also the tunnels would be very weird in islands maps...

In this game there are Romans, Byzantines and Italians, where is the logic? Literally all the same. The Byzantines always called themselves the Eastern Roman Empire and Latin was spoken normally in Constantinople, it was even more prevalent than Greek.

Highly enjoyable video sir. Good work. Did the Serbs not have Royal guards/Elite detachment with a specific designation that you can use for the name? ''Vanguard'' is just extremely generic.

This incredibly cool civilisation is now a mod! If anyone's interested, I've recreated the Serbs as closely as possible in the Genie Editor, and published the mod. If you want to try it out for yourselves, search "MantisAoE Civ Concepts - The Serbs" and subscribe to the data and text mods. The only feature I couldn't get working was the Tunnel, but I've come up with an alternative building that increases the speed of nearby infantry and very quickly heals garrisoned foot troops, hopefully someone will find some use for it!
