When this song came out, people didn't insult strangers millions of times a day, we were friendly to one another, we respected each other's feelings and had free speech, all at the same time. Computers, cellphones and greedy media controllers ruined our beautiful world. There's almost no resemblance to the beautiful world I lived in when this song was a hit. @donaldfewell77211 жыл бұрын
Thrilling, amazing music! I crave listening to this, letting it fill me with its power! One thing that I loved about the group was the emotional openness, honesty and vulnerability of the lyrics, of persons- women- who weren't too afraid to feel and show hurt, for example, not just pose as tough and always self-assured. As far as images went and all that it meant, weren't they packaged (I mean this realistically, not intending cynicism) as "bad tough girls who were nonetheless true to boyfriends and who all (four) had hearts of gold and a kind, honest relationship? Image-wise, if taken (at all) seriously, these young women were the stuff of nightmares and panic, loathing by many parents and authorities, who feared, for example, in Heteroland, that their sons would get these women prematurely pregnant, etc., the stuff of young tragic or rocky road, difficult love and life. I care about music and feeling, and their music works on me! On a light note, I love the hairstyles ( all of the looks!), and I love every time I see a big hairdo, a beehive, any of it. I love flips, too- my late fiancee chose to have a neat flip for her high school graduation picture (later, in '69), and she looked fabulous with that style.:) The shoes of that era seem under represented, under- commented upon (but not undocumented). I liked the fashions and styles of that era, when I was so young. (I was born in '61.)

There were drugs, racial protests, opposition to the war, rebellion. Seriously a great song written by a guy named George "Shadow" Morton who was being questioned by songwriters Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich on whether he was able to write a song. He drove out to Long Island and parked at the beach and wrote the entire song. Presented it to Barry/Greenwich (which to say they were left with their jaws hanging). What a group of girls! Too bad Mary's sister Betty (Elizabeth Weiss) left the band. The four girls were incredible. The girls were born and raised in Cambria Heights, NY (Queens). They lived one block a way from one another and met at Andrew Jackson High School. The high school officially closed in 1994.

John Lennon claimed that he wrote "Help!" as a slow ballad, and I've always wondered if this was his inspiration, at least in part... The verse here has a very similar chord progression to the intro/chorus of that song, and this would have been a hit around the time he was writing it (late 1964/early 1965).

Free as a bird was an unreleased demo until the 2000s. This is probably a coincidence. in fact the part Paul sings was written for the anthology release and wasn't originally part of the song. Great song though.

I heard this song many years ago, I think from a Cold Case episode (of all things). And I was like “wait a minute…” because I thought the exact same thing about Paul’s vocals. But I never knew who sang it or what it was called until years later, and I would always incorrectly call it “Walking in the Rain”. Fast forward a few more years, and now it’s been turned into an intolerable snippet for dumb videos.

@Meadow Pinkelle I have some bad news for you about "My Sweet Lord". Look it up. A lot of their early songs are pretty similar to 50s rock songs because rock was a bit more homogenous then.
