I'm so glad that Frank Darabont decided to end the movie the way he did. The reunion between Red and Andy was perfect. I've been watching this movie for twenty years and that scene still makes me tear up every single time I watch it.

The one actor I'm surprised I haven't seen more of is the guy who played Byron Hadley. His jawline is intimidating and his voice is so powerful. These Superhero movies should cast that guy as a villain. I think he has the potential to be the best General Zod or Lex Luthor ever.

The ONE movie that if I tune across it while surfing around for something, no matter where I come in, I'll watch it to the glorious end. No huge fan of opera, but Freeman's narration of that scene and 500 hardened convicts standing in rapture to that beautiful aria, puts as big a lump in my throat as the ending.

At 21 I read Stephen King’s story and thought it would make a great film. Frank Darabont, about my age, did the same. Except he went out and made it. Just finished listening to the story last night for the first time since 1982, although I’ve seen the movie many times. The script, a more heightened, condensed version of the story, actually uses many actual snippets of narration and dialogue, but in different places than the original - to great effect. If you’re familiar with the movie, reading or listening to the original story will surprise you. Darabont put in a lot of though and work to make it the classic it now is. King has expressed his appreciation.

I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. The truth is I don't want to know , some things are best left unsaid.I like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can't be expressed in words...and makes your heart ache because of it.I tell you the voices were higher and farther than anybody in grey place dares to dream. It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made those walls dissolve away...and for the briefest moment every last man in the Shawshank felt free...

As I look back, hard to believe I did time there all those years ago (OSR, Mansfield, Ohio where this was filmed-I believe it's a museum or somethin now). Was 17 when I went in for a 10 year bit and went threw hell myself. Between having to fight all the time from guys trying to assault me, several counts of escape, being beaten by guards, spending a lot of time in the hole, etc., I can relate to much of this. And it's as horrible looking in real life as it is in the movie, I can tell you. :-) I have watched this movie at least 20 times (I actually bought it), and I thank Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman and Stephen King for bringing some of what I went thru in 'real-life' to the screen.

Read the short story and see the film. Normally both don't match because they are so different in interpretation but this film still works despite the differences being quite big. Red is a white Irishman, it all occurs under different Governors (Bob Gunton is the only one not to age) and Tommy simply gets transferred and not murdered.

Stephen King's always been a little bit hit or miss for me. Having said that, I've been reading everything he's ever written since I was old enough to read (since about 1982!) so I guess I must be a "fan." But Different Seasons? That was/is comfortably one of the best examples of original literature I have ever read by anyone, bar none. It is accomplished work by a ridiculously imaginative and ultra-talented writer. I wish he'd written more like that over his career in some ways, but I imagine hitting that level of quality consistently must really take it out of you. Put it this way, very few writers can achieve it even once no matter how hard they try. He did it four times in one collection (!) just to prove, more I suspect to himself than anyone else, that he was a "real" writer and not stuck in the horror genre. And then we were also blessed with this astonishing movie. Double win!
