The Shikoku is Japan’s most primitive dog breed descended from the extinct Japanese Wolf. He’s brave but cautious, so much fun and likes to play hard. Other times he’s soft and acts precious like a cat. A totally fascinating breed with great beauty. I love him 😍

Where do you get all your ‘’facts’’ from lady, the shiba is the most primitive dog breed in the world since theyre DNA is the closest to the wolf, it’s on National Geographic’s website. Although there’s not a big difference between a shiba and a Shikoku, showing us your sources of info would be nice

That personality description could also fit my Akita.
I’m Japanese. Shikoku is written as 四国, meaning four prefectures. It happens to be an island but the translation meaning is “four worlds”. The first word Shi (四) means four actually and Shikoku includes four prefectures of Ehime, Kochi, Tokushima and Kagawa prefectures in southern Japan. This is not a popular everyday breed and not many people own this breed actually outside of these prefectures in Japan. I just hope westerners don’t get these dogs for fun like so many westerners do especially when people are not willing to walk a few hours a day minimum especially for this breed. And this dog is not meant for people with weak muscles or obese people who can barely walk or run for miles as they pull very hard even if they’re trained (they’re really strong muscular dogs). Also it’s not the type of dog to be kept in a home. But you would need a large property where they can be by themselves as it’s an independent dog. I really dislike westerners get these ancient Japanese dogs like a mascot or decoration of sorts and trap in a home. And I’ve seen too many complain they can’t be trained... They can actually be trained but not by most pet owners. You need to be a very experienced dog owner who have had experience with other Japanese dogs perhaps hunting breeds like Akita but it’s even harder to train than Akita as this dog is determined and very independent. Btw, most Japanese dogs actually are kept in a backyard of a home in suburbs (for Shiba) or for other larger breeds in a farm house backyard in rural country side. I do hope people don’t get these dogs living in the city in an apartment or something. It’s really absurd when some people get Akita living in an apartment (I’ve seen them actually kept in an apartment…). That would be really cruel. These dogs are happy living in outside. No Japanese families keep these ancient dogs inside the home but backyard only with their own dog house and clean bowl of water. At night time they sleep in a dog house and they’re happy to be listening who is passing by and they would fearlessly protect your home as they are very loyal to owners. But they’re meant to be living in outside. Only in winter we provide warm blankets or heater or keep them inside like in garage/shed.

I've an Akita , she's named YoRoKoBe , tho we call her Kobe mostly , I save her full name on call for if things get serious. I live in Canada , and we own a ten acre lot of land " with log cabin " outside our city " about a 3 hours drive if over the speed limit " Yard is surrounded by rangeland and connected to a wildlife corridor. Our Akita has free range of the space, plus acres more of our neighbors rangeland , she doesn't chase their cattle , but keeps them from our yard , and will go after coyotes or other predators in field. Often will hunt and eat gophers , rabbits and sometimes sage grouse when loose . In city we have a wilderness of a yard , high fence . We walk her daily . She's calm around other dogs, tolerates our cat . Is very fierce and protective if theres reason . Ignores the rest . We left her overnight at a kennel for a wedding trip " kennel was at the breeders she was born in " Our good friend who is the breeder , showed us the kennel when we arrived to pick her up . She tore open the chain link gate to get out to go sit on his deck , at home she sits on deck , at farm she sits on deck . At kennel , she wont be kenneled , she took the bottom of the chain link in her jaws , and just pulled up and out , ripped it right open. However she can be so gentle and quiet those who do not know the breed , would think she was a timid fluffy dog , maybe asleep . Akitas are not for everyone, I agree . They take the right person for the right life . At the farm , if I'm working, she will disappear, soon as I'm done , she reappears, if my wife is off on a hike , Kobe goes back and fourth ,to check on us both . A neighbor who's daughter who has got to walk her , is now under our dogs eye . When she is beside her , anyone Kobe doesn't trust. Cannot get close . I love the Japanese breeds ! They fit my own way of living perfectly . I've been reading up " due diligence " on the other dogs of your island home . Just to learn more , and to consider options for a someday , for when my leave to my cabin is to call it home . And the city simply a stop over to visit friends

The way the owner plays with her dog clearly has an impact on his behaviour. Throughout the video when we see them playing, and she’s always holding the toy up high and rewarding him when he jumps. That’s probably a large part of why he jumps on strangers, he wants to play and that’s how he plays because she introduced that kind of behaviour. Even if she tried training him not to jump, she’d need to stop having him jump in play time because it’s rewarding that behaviour. He’s clearly a very playful, very sweet dog who wants to have fun with humans and let loose, but sadly roughhousing can lead to serious injuries.

100% agree with you! It’s just that initial greeting where they’re cautious of others and then after that are incredibly warm. I kind of think they’re quite human like in that respect (what human wants to be rushed up to and touched on the head when you first meet them anyway?). I’ve found actually all the people who are scared of dogs or who genuinely aren’t bothered, Kiyo seems to love the best as they give him the space he needs. He’s also so respectful of their space too and really gentle with them which I love as he can adapt to the person. My mum and sister in law are really scared of dogs but love Kiyo as he is really calm and gentle around them without anyone having to tell him to be. But at the same time if someone wants to play rough with him and roll around on the floor like Anneka was doing, well he loves that too.

Once upon a time, many wolves lived in Japan. Of course there were many dogs. In old Japan, dogs were free-range. Therefore, it is said that dogs and wolves were naturally mated. The ancestors of Shikoku dogs are said to have been born by mating the wolf and the dog. Alternatively, it is said that hunters mated wolves and dogs to create excellent hounds.

@@olihallam9667 The foundation dogs I believe are the chow chow, Samoyed and the Wolfspitz (also know as the Keeshond) The Wolfspitz is one of the five varieties of German Spitz. Here’s an article I found explaining their involvement in relation to the Eurasier as I didn’t do a great job explaining: ‘The German Spitz is a type, not a breed, of spitz-type dogs from Germany. In the modern day, the German Spitz is considered a single breed, there are five varieties based on size and colour: the Wolfspitz or Keeshond, the Giant Spitz or Großspitz, the Medium Spitz or Mittelspitz, the Miniature Spitz or Kleinspitz and the Pomeranian or Zwergspitz. Thank you (as the owner of kiyo) for pointing that out. He was extremely excited in this video and over threshold .. a teenager with balls in a new environment. We live in the countryside and barely see many people / dogs and we filmed in a place around strangers that was busy. I always have Kiyo on lead and under control if I’m not sure of the environment which causes frustration for him but that’s something I’m working on. Excited as you said yes, but under control. Every day we have to manage off lead dogs running at us or people trying to stroke him which is frustrating but Kiyo is always under control. At the beginning I used to be one of ‘those people’ with their dogs off lead and limited control shouting ‘it’s ok he’s friendly’ but I soon realised it’s irresponsible and rude.

Thank you for uploading the Japanese dog. Japanese dogs are thought to be difficult to keep, but that's because the way of training is different from other dogs. When you have a Japanese dog, you will notice that there are many different kinds of calls. It doesn't seem to have an expression, so it's actually rich. Japanese dogs can't move unless they are convinced. In order to convince you, you need to talk to your dog all the time. Sometimes you also need a strong tone. Please tell me that you shouldn't do what you can't do. Please discuss it instead of blaming it. Always talk to a lot of dogs. I'm sure I'll be the best partner in the world.

We teach soft mouth. She is cautious but not nervous. Can be rough when playing with a similar strength dog. Yuki is a small 13 kg at 13 months old. Perhaps we are lucky, but Yuki is good with other dogs generally (if they dont chase her ….she prefers to chase them) , good with children, and strangers, clean and quiet. She doesn’t like people touching her head. For shed twice a year for 6 weeks. For sure, she is not a reliable off lead dog, very prey driven, and she needs exercise and activity. Lovely dog, I am currently binge-watching this series. It is so interesting to learn more details about the different breeds, especially from people who live with them and who understand them best. I was quite surprised about the warning to not approach a Shikoku and just touch him. Who in his right mind would do that with any strange dog, any breed? You have no idea how competent the dog's guardian is, so that sounds like a perfect recipe to get bitten, sooner or later. Obviously you talk to the holder first, and ask if the fellow is friendly and likes to be touched ... no matter if it is a tiny Pomeranian or a huge Cane Corso.

This is a good vid. Our Shikoku only likes people when they do not look directly at him. Direct Eye contact makes him skittish, but not aggressive. Look away and he will come right up to you and love you. He likes chest and back pets more than head contact. Look at him too soon and he will run away and bark at you. It is a weird courting process, but they are really amazing dogs who are very intelligent. I'm >50 and never had a dog with a memory like this. Once they like you, the matter is settled forever. That said, be prepared for some discrimination: the boys tend to warm faster to girls/women and the girls tend to warm to boys/men faster. Shikoku's are sexist in that way. Deal with it. If that offends you, find another dog breed.

Lol 🤣 “sexiest”, “discrimination” So funny! Lol. I would say they’re just like many Japanese men and I am Japanese actually. 😂

A rare breed. Thank you for featuring this. It shows very similar behaviour to the APBT in terms of temperament, drive and energy. The only difference is the human affection.

Love this film . But to say about the tosa many breeds went into the tosa mainly mastiffs and bull breeds . This beautiful little dog is very typical of a lot of Japanese dog breeds I've owned Akitas which are very similar in temperament friends I've known over the years have owned the Shiba inu's say the same about their dogs

I work with dogs. This breed.. it's my dream to have one. But, i don't have the time. So i will never buy a dog as long as i don't have time. Don't let your ego do the talking. I have met the shikoku, Shiba Inu, American Akita, Japanse akita, samoyeed, husky. I don't know if she trained him well.. Saying it's okay when he freaks out like that is saying: good job!! You make it worse. He also walks in front of her being the leader. I can see improvement here. Petting on the head is never a good idea, never pet a unknown dog on the head.

Thank you for your comments. You’re right you need a lot of time AND patience with this breed or any primitive breed for that matter. Kiyo is a teenager and at peak excitement so yes I am training him .. every day.. it’s a work in progress and I’m working with a professional trainer. Normally I wouldn’t sit there and let him react I walk in places where I can create distance from dogs and reward him for disengaging. Saying it’s ok is not saying ‘good job’ .. you also don’t know the language I’ve taught him. I also absolutely let him walk in front of me when there are no distractions around. he doesn’t need to be my side at all times - he knows how to heel but I allow him to move freely and sniff and explore. He was also walking in front of me to get good shots of him. I don’t believe the video was meant to be a critique of my training progress but an honest and informative view of what Shikoku’s can be like.

I think these dogs need remote, wild place to live and for the owner to go hunting with them and know how to work with them in hunting game. Even Shibas would be better off not in urban environment so they can use their hunting instinct for small game more if they were in remote places - you see so many people with Shibas on leads and no recourse to hunting... and it's because people like their appearance not taking care about the behaviour that suits the dog.

Maybe not the Shikoku inu, but another fabulous Japanese breed that a German spitz breeder got a hold of and made his own type of dog, might have the extinct Japanese wolf genetics. Unfortunately for this breed, it was not named or true breed recognized in the world. He really did have true Japanese wolf genetics with the breeding from what his journal had in it. And the German breeder had European wolf genetics from his own line of spitz breeds and wolf hybrids. They looked very spectacular from the journal I read just in description. Like a shiba-inu sized-wolf. Wolf in appearance and very high energy. Very good noses. Not as trainable as other dog breeds, and they had an issue with doing the tasks the German breeder was hoping to aim for, which was multi-tasking on the sled, hunting, and looks. However sadly with his passing, the breed did not continue on and in the absence of the genetic tree line, it was lost. There was no name put to this breed of dog. What I am most curious about with reading his breeding journey back sometime in the 1900’s, ( can’t remember the years, sorry) is when exactly and where this Japanese wolf hybrid dog was and how exactly he knew about it and how he got one to breed with. I’d love to know about those ventures. But there was just not many on the Japanese breed, only that he was adamant that the genetics would help his line of dogs. Also, There was never a mention of the dogs breed name or I probably have forgotten it most likely for the type of spitz. I read about the breeding history and this guys journey with trying to hone a small wolf like and strong hunter and sled dog all in one. It never came about but the reading was memorable and fun and almost felt like I was reading his personal diary! I loved it! And I did read this back in high school. It made me so passionate about dog breeds and wolf hybrids. His story and Jack London’s, call of the wild, and white fang. Those books really made me want to learn about each different breed and why they came about and older lines that are now gone in the world.

@@icklesoph69 I hope you are able to find opportunity for your dog to do this. They are baying dogs with respect to hunting and acting independently, hence "training" is secondary to developing rapport/connection and communication with the human hunter in this activity. There's a short clip of training Shikoku young to bay wild boar and learn to dodge them (the boars were non-tuskers) by making a mistake and being trapped by the boar (in the full video). A lesson the Shikoku needs to learn early to avoid injury and death by dangerous adult tusker boars later on in life if used for hunting. The snip of the clip is very short here but that's also illustrative of their use as hunting dogs.
