The Shimano Expride B Spinning Rod - My 24 Hour On the Water Review

As I state in the video, this is the fastest 24 hours of fishing I have done so far with a new rod! This is probably the most fun I had with any rod I have ever fished. That said, there are limitations to this rod’s capability and I address these limitations in the video. There are some capabilities of this rod that can compete with even more expensive rods. The Shimano Expride B Spinning Rod definitely has a place in a fisherman’s higher end rod arsenal.

Your review of the Expride was right on the money. Last week I bought the Expride 7' MF spin and the St Croix Victory 7'1" MHF. I was impressed with how light both were. The Expride was 3.7 oz. The Victory was only 3.8 oz. The Expride was definitely better for heavier reaction baits than lighter finesse lures. It's pretty stiff and it's not until you cast heavier lures that you can utilize it's full casting distance capabilities which are good. IMO they should label it Light Medium Heavy like Kistler's line of rods. The Victory appears to be quite versatile. It's rated for up to 3/4 oz lures but I was throwing 1.1 oz lures well without it feeing overloaded in any way. Interesting to me was that when retrieving rattle traps and and chatterbaits the Victory was more sensitive as far as feeling the lures vibrate. Thank you for your kind response. I definitely agree that Shimano should consider Kistler’s rod ratings regarding the Expired B. That rod deserves to have power ratings even with the light models. I am also impressed at your success at throwing lures beyond the 3/4 ounce rating on that Victory. I may have to try that as well, LOL. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣

Hey Mali, thank you for the 24hr review. The forward grip on the new spinning expride-B is a great improvement over the previous expride spinning rods, IMO. I agree with your assessment of the Expride being well suited for reaction baits and 3/8oz+ jig and T-rig. Best wishes on your move, brother. Our last adult child just got a place of their own and the wife and I are headed to be with friends and family in the PNW. The Steelhead, Salmon and Smallmouth are calling and I’m answering. I love my Expride casting rods. I have been buying one every year to build up my inventory. I was a huge St Croix guy but they just dont have any $200-$300 price point rods in casting that can compare to Shimano.

I believe That Shimano's sweet spot is $200-$400 for Baitcast combos. That Expride B is the master of the reaction bait for sure! 👏🏿👏🏿🎣

The way that you categorize the Expride B as a reaction bait rod, I think, is probably due to the action that you chose to purchase the rod in. Medium-Heavy lends itself toward use as a reaction bait rod.. I think you should either purchase, or pick up at a tackle store and get a feel of, one of the Medium Light or Light versions. They behave a lot differently, due to the action. Very much more suited to finesse and tactile feedback, which is why we have rods with different actions to begin with. Just like the old saying 'horses for courses", with fishing there is right tool for the right job. I enjoy fishing with the Expride series, but am not a devotee. I like it more in the lighter actions and look elsewhere for medium and greater action rods. I like the reviews, and wanted to give some feedback. Keep on keeping on.

Merry Christmas!!! So I just received the 7'-2" Expride MH and I'm actually surprised by how light the tip section is. Compared to the NRX+ 843s & Conquest 843s the Expride feels like a full power down.... because I don't use casting gear I'm hoping this rod can do both reaction baits but also have the power to set a weedless hook bottom contact style presentation. Can't wait for spring! Happy holidays.

We have tcurve premium in the range also designed for aus fishing its on par with expride they were top of the line classics back in the day. Im not a fan of the new look but sections expride look ok have a xh bait caster.

Exprides are awesome rods. I own quite a few of them including their finesse rods. The medium heavy is a great rod but not what I would consider finesse. Just want to make sure the people watching the video understand that not all spinning exprides feel like reaction rods and that there are rods in the lineup that are perfect for finesse as well.

Thanks for your comment. I definitely agree that the lineup does have for finesse models. That said, the the MH Zodias seems to handle finesse presentations better than the MH Expride B. Since I have heard this perspective several times, I may purchase a MedLt Expride B to enjoy the way it handles finesse presentations. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣

As you might know, the Poison Ultima Series of Rods is only sold in a few locations in the United States. Unfortunately the only deal that is available is to purchase it is to take advantage of the dollar/yen exchange rate and buy it overseas. I definitely understand. I grew up on 2 piece Ugly Stiks. When I started throwing higher rods and realized the overwhelming majority of them are 1 piece rods, I was a bit bothered. However I eventually got used to the difference. Thanks for sharing.👏🏿👏🏿🎣

Thanks for the question. You will enjoy the experience! The Expride B will perform extremely well compared to competitors in its price range. Now I have mentioned in a different video that the Zodias is better with finesse presentations than the Expride B. However if you are going to power finesses for those big Smallies than the Expride Bwill be a great choice. Btw, the Tatula elite is a photo finish competitor with the Expride B. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
