So you know how Topher Grace decided to teach himself editting by cutting the Star Wars prequels into an 85 minute film? I wonder how this miniseries would play out if someone did the same thing, just cutting it down to a 2 and a half hour movie.

As a fan of the novel, I do prefer this over Kubrick's version (even though I think its a solid film if not necessarily a good adaptation)...but there are a few key things that would have made it a lot better: 1. If they didn't show Tony fully until near the end and had him more mysterious for most of the series 2. If they put more effort into the cgi (even by mid 90s standards it was kinda bad) and only use it when they couldn't do practical effects 3. If they made it for a cable network who would've let them keep the R-rated edge of the novel 4. If they had trimmed it down to two parts instead of three so that the tension was better maintained

Just because something works in a book doesn't mean it will work on film. Kubrick took what he could from the novel and crafted a masterpiece, this miniseries was so obsessed with being accurate that it ended up a boring, bloated, incoherent mess.

The novel is scarier because you care way more for the characters in it and I feel having no ambiguity about the ghosts is far more frightening because how do you combat something that defies “a logical explanation”?

I love the book, but the miniseries is just a slog to get through. A writer and a screenwriter are not the same thing. There's just no point in watching this when you can just read the far superior novel. In my opinion, at least.

It could be done, but not on a TV budget. You don't need to even show the hedges moving in-camera, just make them way bigger and place them in different places between cuts. At the end when Halloran comes to the Overlook and burns one of the hedge animals there's a blizzard going on, so then you can use CGI and have them obscured by the falling snow.

Book Jack is far crazier than movie Jack from the getgo. Book Jack has a history of violence and is a rageaholic. Book jack smacked Danny. Book jack didnt fight back until the end.

Congrats on the upcoming Daddyhood! As for The Shining... I actually can't even watch the Kubrick version (barely made it through my 1st and only viewing). TO ME, Nicholson's over the top hamminess tops anything Nicholas Cage has EVER done. It wasn't The Shining, it was The Jack Nicholson Show. The miniseries definitely leaves a lot to be desired, but it's SO much closer to the original story.

I understand why King hated Kubrick's version. You can tell while reading the book that it was a very personal story to King and he probably wrote Jack based off his own experiences (being a high school teacher with alcoholism). So it makes sense he took it personally when Kubrick made Jack into a complete psychopath who never seemed like a good person, even before the supernatural shenanigans. All that being said, IMO, Kubrick's movie is better than the novel. (Don't get me started on the PoS "sequel" Doctor Sleep)

King really wanted a good ending for Jack. He even wrote it in Dr. Sleep. I really liked your photo homage with the cats. I like both versions. The original just shouldn't be thought of as anything to do with the book. As just a movie, it's good, though still overanalyzed like no other. For an adaptation of the book, that you can actually show on broadcast tv, this miniseries is fine. Like you said, Weber carried this just like Jack carried all his burdens. I find both versions of Jack to be great. He is simply one of the best characters that King ever created.

The Nostalgia Critic reviewed The Shining miniseries before Brad could. But it's just so flawed of an adaption that tries to be faithful, but turned out to be completely laughable. Jack Nicholson portrayed his character perfectly; a mentally unstable father and caretaker of the hotel who decides to win back his freedom by killing his family. Jack, in the miniseries is just a guy who goes on the brink of insanity after realizing his job wasn't worth it. The bear costume is a wolf costume in this and threatened to eat Danny just to continue scaring the fuck out of him, not the clever and terrifying Big Lipped Alligator Moment where this man dressed as a bear startles Wendy when marking her escape from the Overlook Hotel with Danny as Jack was about to kill them both. Never mentioned again, but quite an unexpected scare. The iconic line "Here's Johnny!" wasn't here cuz it originated from a talk-show which Nicholson took for granted in his role for The Shining(whom he guest-starred), but just a soft-toned "Boo!". Really? So yeah, I'd take The Shining 1981 over this miniseries just as mediocre as a cheap motel with no pool or bar. Sure, Kubrick can be quite a troublesome perfectionist, but he still made art despite his flaws through filmmaking. If you knew The Simpsons did The Shining better in terms of parody, then that's genuine for such an ' 100% accurate to the book' adaption!

I'm pretty sure I recognize that stretch of highway when they're driving to the hotel. It's near this town called Bailey about an hour outside of Denver that has a hotdog stand shaped like a hotdog!

You know, this is legiterally the first experience with 'The Shining' I had. When I was younger, I didn't care for horror movies, when I got older I loved them, but I had some hype aversion to people talking about The Shining movie, so the mini-series, which was closer to King's vision, according to the advertisement, is what I wanted. I liked IT, The Tommyknockers and The Stand, so I enjoyed this. Then everyone told me it wasn't good. I dunno. Maybe because it was my first exposure to it, but I remembered it fondly.

No, listen to your gut. You're lucky you weren't exposed to Kubricks first. It's not about the spx, it's about the story STEPHEN KING wanted to tell. It's about who Jack and Wendy were supposed to be. Anybody who read the novel and STILL prefer Kubricks version.... I'll never understand. Just don't read, then.

Mr. Cinema Snob, you make this video review of Stephen King’s The Shining, an absolutely hilarious watch! Especially when you voice over Steven Weber’s Jack Torrance with an always, over-the-top angry, agitated voice a drunk father would always have. I laughed my guts so hard, I thought I would die of both horror and laughter at the same time.
