How did we get here?
After a year of full time travel living the van life, we had to adapt when the world changed. To keep busy we’ve converted our tiny house on wheels into a fully functioning off grid home that has everything we need. Realizing that none of us know how long this new normal will stick around, we made the decision that building a home here was the best decision we could make. We've spent the last year doing EVERYTHING involved with coordinating and planning the build ourselves as well as setting up this off grid property to be able to provide us with the the food we'll need in the future. That led us to needing a place to live while we realized our dream of building a shipping container home. After lots of searching we finally discovered Geodesic Dome's and it was the perfect fit for us while we took our time with the container home.

This was one of those weeks where all the dreaming, planning, and hard work over the last year has really come together. These windows going in has completely transformed the vision for our home and we couldn’t be more excited. Two quick things we wanted to mention, if you were worried about where we were last week (and why we didn’t post), we always update the community tab right here on KZbin if we’re unable to post for some reason. Keep in mind, we’re a two-man show and sometimes the construction, filming, the production of these videos can be overwhelming. Taking down-time and recharging is just so important, hope you understand! Also, there’s been some confusion on how much the project has grown and that we’re building a “McMansion”, while it absolutely looks HUGE, it’s the way we’ve been able to strategically layout the interior having open concept areas instead of closed off walls. Believe it or not, the home is only 1,600 square feet (the average home size in the USA is 2,300 square feet). We meant to mention that in the video but it slipped our minds! We can’t wait to hear what you all think of the windows…were you as sick to your stomach as we were watching them go in?!

It's always great to have an unbiased third party to listen, ask questions when beneficial, encourage self-reflection & provide tools that are applicable IRL be it personal, vocational, mental, family, partners, and pre-existing childhood trauma. This will all fall into place when you find the therapist that fits you & your needs.

You guys are great - so hard working and smart - you should write a book on building a home off grid with all you have learned. My husband and I have watched you for a couple of years and love how loving and respectful you are to each other, just like we were. He passed from cancer in November - we were together 18 years - he loved watching you - treasure each other, as in a matter of seconds your life can change forever.

I have no problem with your own ads for your sponsors, but now that I've gone back to the "beginning" of your postings I had to be able to watch the videos without unseemly interruptions. Your channel is my evening "wind-down. And it has been absolutely wonderful to see you manifest your dreams.

For the fire wood, use a low rise trolley that you place onto "Ruby" , pack with fire wood, drive down to the house, then roll off directly onto the deck and into the house. This means you don't have to redesign the deck. Just make sure the height of the back of ruby and the deck are somewhat similar ! Hope this helps!

One should always prepare your holes Todd, even this 73-year-old great gramma knows that, but I can't stop smiling. You made my dimples ache. We live in the woods of Michigan, a neighbor, and lover of Canada. The turkeys have already come to our yards for seeds and corn. The deer are here now and my big guy will give me a dirty look because I couldn't put much corn out since our 20 year old car broke down and it may take a few months to repair it consider what social Security is. I also have one little racoon that comes before dark. I put out peanut butter sandwiches for him, along with dried cat food and seeds. He looks a bit disheveled since he doesn't have anyone to groom him. He doesn't mind us behind the glass, I think he understands we are in a cage. I'm glad that therapy helps. I hope all of you have been well otherwise. Your fur babies included! We all love you.

@Tyler and Todd thank you so much for being willing to talk about the importance of mental wellness. Too many companies and influencers will talk about it after something goes wrong (mass shooting or some other disaster) but very few are willing to discuss it as a daily need that is just as important as food, water, and clean air to breathe. Anyway, thank you!

The house is indeed transformed and with the windows in you will notice how much warmer it will be to work inside even though not all the insulation is installed. As for the wall in the tower, wait until the stairs are in before you try to decide what you want to put there. With the stairs and landings it become sort of a journey and you could use that to have an art wall, not having a clear vision of how that wall will look when finished makes it difficult to advise but, as a quilter, I’d use it to display quilts, both traditional Canadian designs and also tribal First Nation designs. Youre so deep in the woods living off the land to hark back to the First Nations people with their designs and then incorporate the pioneer designs too would ground the tower and the house. It would also complete the journey of ascending the stairs, maybe an eagle design at the top of the tower, a symbolic gesture to the freedom this house has given you! Just a thought from you Aussie mate, Neil in Australia 🇦🇺

As much as I love living green walls, I find they can create some humidity in the space. They aren't super hard to maintain but they do require some work and sometimes they can attract bugs. You can add a hanging rug it gives texture, warmth and is artful or also because it is so vertical a draped piece of fabric also would be spectacular as a showpiece. You can also mimic the windows and have 3 art pieces that are similar to the window sizes. Whatever you choose you are starting with an amazing light filled space that is going to be a focal point. Getting really excited for you guys to start the interiors.

You could add a passthrough door. Here in the US these are becoming more popular and are typically installed in a garage to pass through groceries from your car to your kitchen but the same thing could work for wood. We live in an old house and have an original coal door that was a pass through for coal to the stove in the basement. Everything is looking amazing guys! HUGS.

It's always well worth the wait, Tyler and Todd; your videos are inspiring and entertaining on multiple levels. You're going to have so much natural light, so important in the North where one can suffer from light deprivation. Before you do anything to that "blank canvas" wall, ask your engineer what the "weight tolerance" is. Then you can narrow down your options: plants, waterfall, mosaic, art feature, etc. Install a slip proof ramp on your wrap around porch so you can wheelbarrow your firewood straight from storage to indoor wood pile. Install a grate at the bottom of the ramp to scape off any mud on the wheelbarrow's tire and anyone's mucky shoes to keep the deck clean. I didn't see Lilly, "Squirrel." Was she just sleeping the whole time? She usually makes an appearance at some point in your videos. 🐈‍⬛ At least we got to see the boys, your snuggle buddies, Charlie and Eddie. They can make any hard day better! 🐕🐕

She made an appearance while they were preparing lunch. I thought of a waterfall as well. A living wall can be good to bring the humidity back to normal, from the wood stove making it dry.

I keep thinking this and not writing the comment so I’m just going to say it. We have an open staircase with 20 foot ceilings (full height of two floors) and it causes huge problems with heating and cooling our house because it funnels all the hot air to the second floor. In the winter this means it’s impossible to keep the lower floor warm without making the upper floor roasting hot. In the summer it’s impossible to keep the upstairs cool without making the lower floor frigid, there’s always a 5-8 degree difference between floors. I say this because I worry that your staircase tower will cause the same problem. You might want to consider a sliding door at the bottom to allow you to control the air flow.

WOW, how beautiful. Your windows are absolutely phenomenal. I was on the edge of my chair, ready to jump thru my laptop and grab a window or one of you. LOL, that would be a long jump from Lake Anna, VA. I'm not trying to be negative. A word of warning be prepared for birds to fly into your windows. I know from experience. The birds have propably been flying through any openings in the house all along, and they won't know that suddenly, there is a piece of glass in the way. Finally, I do have a thought about your deck for delivering firewood. Don't forget to look at the window above the deck, God forbid that a window should need to be worked on or replaced, and the deck ends up being in the way. As they say, an ounce of caution is worth more than a pound of cure. God bless you and your families for the inspirational role models you all are. Also, the magic and strength that it takes for a couple to last and even flourish under this kind of stress and responsibility is rare and wonderful. Now, to my actual point... if you can see all the way though your home to the other side, you may run into some issues with birds crashing into windows, trying to go all the way through. I know I am being a total drag, but you are both animal lovers, as are we, and if I can help you avoid some heartbreak.... Re not moving firewood a ton of times, consider having an insulated wood box beside your fireplace, one that has both a sealed door to the outdoors (above high snow levels) and a sealed door to the indoors. You can load into it from outside, and load out of it from inside with a fraction of the heat loss and mess, because it has its own little airlock. This is one of my favourite features of all the self-built homes I've seen over the years (not my idea, but definitely worth passing along).

It’s looking great gentlemen! Tyler, I’m sorry to hear you’ve been struggling with your mental health. I’m sure Todd has also had his struggles. I can relate. I’m in my early 40s and have been on antidepressants off and on since my late teens. The epidemic we just got through was really hard on me. I was getting my PTSD triggered constantly by angry scared people. I wound up leaving my job of 12.5 years. I checked myseld into the psych ward for a week and worked with my doctor and psychiatrist and therapist to get my mental health back to where it needed to be. I’m doing much better now, almost two years later!! You’re right, having a good therapist makes a huge difference. You also know all of us are here for you as well. Seriously. So glad that you are taking care of your mental health in addition to all your other responsibilities. So often we forget or think we are too busy to practice self-care. So very happy that work is progressing so well on the house. Onward! 'Cause we don't want anyone to get hurt.

PS with the deck, why not get a reinforced ramp, ideally one that you can disassemble when you don’t need it? Reinforce that bit of the deck to where you’re going to take the firewood to?

How wonderful! I can imagine your excitement. It is not my home and I was getting anxious just watching the placement of the window. I think you should really take advantage of the north tower wall. My vote would be to use the light and create a living plant wall. You could create hanging baskets, art placement and shelves. You will ‘feel it’ when you have lived in the home. So well deserved. I look forward to ever Sunday to catch up. Be good to yourselves. Stay happy and earthy. Sending love from Minnesota. 🌎

Firewood suggestion- put wheels on the firewood rack, load the firewood once only while the rack is in the 4 wheeler bed, then drive up to the deck- roll it off the bed and into place near the fireplace in your home (we do this and it saves handling the firewood multiple times

Totally agree on the 'picking your battles' approach to construction. There are things you can do yourself to keep costs down but there are other things that, for different reasons, you just have to have a professional do.

My only concern about see through windows is that the birds often think they can fly right through and end up dead. We've had to put up black silhouettes of birds to try and avoid that from happening.

The number and size of windows is stunning and beautiful - don’t envy you the cleaning of them, but it’ll be worth it.) I bet your lunches beat out peanut butter/jelly Sammie in their lunch boxes. Haven’t I heard ’it is a lot more work than we thought’ before sometime? At 67, I’ve learned that you never completely need to stop learning about yourself and dealing with the crap (and goodies) that come from it. Couldn’t you lift firewood across the deck on your lifting machine? Huge piece of art for the big wall!!

Sometimes when things don't go as planned it is because there is something better on the horizon. So when you could not have the internal stairs, a better option appeared with the tower. I think the tower is awesome and the better option.

Hey there guys. Your place is looking really amazing. We live in a woodsy location in central-eastern Ontario and use 2 wood burning stoves in the winter. We store our firewood in an outer porch and then only bring in a small amount - that we will use that day. We find that insects come in on the wood and they don't hatch if the wood is only inside for a short time. You could store the firewood on your deck and then bring it inside in smaller amounts. That would solve your deck-in-the-way issue. Love watching your channel. 😊
