Italy is not a typical example for Europe . it has a more Mediterranean atmosphere than Northern Europe. Same like Spain, Portugal, Greece.... If you live up North, like Belgium, Netherlands, Germany it's totally different. The colder climate makes a big change in atmosphère, habits , working culture, beaurocracy etc..people are colder, closed up, more disciplined etc...

Hi Daphna from the South of France. Big news and honestly partly thanks to you I finally launched my YT channel about my solo life at 62 here in Marseillan on the Mediterranean. Thank you for being a big part of getting it going. I'm loving the creativity and fun involved but so much to learn. Life in my part of Europe does include some of the things that you mentioned (bureacracy 😬) but i thank my lucky stars and count myself so fortunate to live here. Thanks again for the motivation. Valerie 🙏

Daphna, I am so jealous, I wish we could move now but we have to wait 3 more years for my husband to retire. I actually crave a slow pace of life after living in New York for over 30 years. One thing that I notice when I am in Europe is that I can eat things I cannot eat in the USA, wheat and dairy do not trigger bad reactions in my body, I can have bread and cheese without feeling pain or digestive discomfort. I just signed up for the waiting list for your KZbin class, I need inspiration to get active on my channel again.

I visited Lisbon in 1977 and 80 ( a long time ago ) . Back then Lisbon was a charming city , quiet , without tourists and lots of history. I also found the Portuguese to be particularly nice people . I did visit the Algarve about 10 years ago, but it’s not the same . Not for me . I hope you get back to Portugal sometime .

In Portugal everything closes at 1pm until 3pm. Not all European countries are the same. In Portugal you NEED a car. The public transport in the more rural areas is not so great - even in the Algarve.

The insulation issue does not apply to all EU countries. in Central Europe houses are more than well built, passive houses, triple glazed windows etc

When I’m in Europe one big difference I notice is how safe it is compared to the U.S. No worries about gun violence and shootings, women walk by themselves at night with no fear, it feels so liberating!

Where in EU? On our USA news keeps scaring us saying knife murders and women getting assaulted.

I need to make money on here, or I won't be able to survive when I'm older.💔 Btw I'm totally envious of you, as I hate living here in North Idaho and I want sooo badly to travel and leave here. Like go live in Belize, or somewhere....But I'm all by myself and don't have any savings either ughh.. I love your channel though!💜🌸🤗

It's a good idea to carry a small torch with you for those moments when the lights go out. Life is definitely more relaxed in southern European countries compared to other western countries, like the US or UK. Beaurocracy can be an issue though. I agree with many of your points. Yes, it can feel colder inside a house than outside.

Very good points, in other words, there is no paradise, just compromise. Now, regarding the houses, the ones built in the last couple of year actually have insulation, on the exterior, not interior, and work quite well. I've been inside one of them and it was toasty warm in winter with little heating. But please don't try to build a new house, I don't know what takes longer, the permits or the building itself. You can always cover an old house with exterior and attic insulation. It's not that expensive and no permits are needed. Enjoy your new life.

I live in a new building, its freezing inside! Its actually warmer outside

@@Daphna. If it's an apartment you can only install insulation on the inside which is more complicated but very much possible with pladur boards on the walls and ceiling. Install air conditioning which is the best cost effective heating and never turn it off all winter at a low 18° during the day and a bit higher in the evening. It will turn itself on/off and will never let the temperature get too low and it should not cost you over €200/month. It's what I do and my house is comfortable enough. I know someone who installed floor heating, only in the living room, which spreads the heat into the walls, very comfy but a higher bill per month. A fireplace lit each evening helps a bit. If you have a house then definitely insulate first the attic, then under the floorboards and later all the exterior walls, it works like a miracle, I've seen it, I thought I was inside a nordic house. As far as I know all new houses must have this insulation. Also, sun exposure is very important since during the day it's often sunny and warm. Finally as a last resort I dress inside the house with a now very common ultralight and super warm jacket, boots and even bought online ultralight ski pants. In bed I have an electric blanket. This is just for the cold spells.

Hey Daphna 👋🏽 💕 Thanks for the informative video! Really enjoyed it! I’m so excited because this April I’ll be going to Barcelona for a week, and then flying to Lisbon for a week (first time in Portugal), and then taking a train to Porto for 4 days. OMG - I’m a lover of seafood, so that’s going to be fun! I’ll be renting an Airbnb in Lisbon, so I’ll go to some markets to gather fresh food to prepare some meals. I loved doing that when I was in Italy and France.

Hi Daphna. Great video! It's been a while... I will be retiring in about 7 months and we will be moving from Japan to Spain, so this was very helpful as Japan in many ways, as you know, is the opposite of Europe. Still lots of bureaucracy, but everything is super efficient and on time - to the second. It is also super safe, at least compared to the US, my home country. Although some of the older houses with shoji (paper sliding doors) can be very cold in the winter, most houses and apartments here do have a/c and heat, but not central, and the unit is up near the ceiling, so in winter, hot air rises :) The one thing that I think will be a major adjustment are the eating and sleeping times. But, being retired will allow us to change our schedules, and hopefully our body clocks as well :)

The philosophy of life in Europe is to live slower and more comfortably. And it's true, we have more accessible social security and medical care than in the US. And specifically Portugal, it has a good climate, good food and a very important item, security (7th in the world)! Daphna, enjoys Europe and Portugal in particular. You know you're welcome.

The video would be more accurately titled "moving to Mediterranean countries", the whole of Europe is not like that there are vast differences. And am a bit confused, aren't you from Europe to begin with? I would have guessed Scandinavian perhaps? But definitely European 🤔 The title makes it sound as if you came from another continent 😇 Personally I think there are different places for different stages. Where we live as a 20 year old is not necessarily correct for us anymore as we mature, our preferences and priorities and circumstances change and with the years we truly grow into our own.. Following one's bliss is always a good idea and you did exactly that. Enjoy your life in Portugal 🍷
