The Shocking Reason Numbuh 5 Refers To Herself In 3rd Person In Codename Kids Next Door...
There’s no arguing that Numbuh 5 was the coolest member of Sector V and likely the coolest operative in all of the Kids Next Door. She had a lot of positive traits that made her such a great character, but one thing that has always puzzled me and other Kids Next Door fans was the fact that she always spoke in the 3rd person. She was the only character in the show to do that on a consistent basis, but they never explained why. After rewatching the series and looking into certain speech habits though, I may have come up with a few reasons that could help explain why Numbuh 5 always referred to herself in the 3rd person. Be prepared though, some of the reasons might be shocking.

The answer is much simpler: Numbuh 5 knew that her code name/call sign "Numbuh 5" was a temporary thing. Once she aged out of the KND her code name/call sign would simply become vacant and recycled for the next operative to use. Referring to herself in the third person gives her an emotional disconnect for mental and emotional safety once it becomes her time to be decommissioned. Numbuh 1 made KND and his code name/call sign his entire identity intertwined with his life as "Nigel Uno" with his work-addicted antics which would ultimately result in extreme anguish once he becomes a teenager and has to stop being a KND member. Numbuh 5 has already separated "Abigal Lincoln" and "Numbuh 5" and thus would ultimately have a much better time dealing with the change when her time is up.

@@youthoughtaboutit6946 I meant the minutes of dread and agony before the mindwipe. It is canon that some operatives are so distraught that they attempt to run. To me it always came off as she's reminding herself who who she was. Numbuh 5 using third person kind of reminded me of soldiers who use callsigns. "Eagle one moving in". It makes it so she's more readily identifiable. To me it always seemed like she was using proper military etiquette. Her callsign is Number 5 so she refers to herself as Numbuh 5 to keep herself in her operative mindset. You're reasoning isn't bad either, But I think the issue is anyone who refers to themselves by a certain name long enough is going to probably pick it up as an identity anyway. Numbuh 5's use of it however came off to me as showing her sheer level of professionalis. Sh enever grew too close to her role, which allowed for her to play it better than most.

One more theory could be that she's following a trope. There is a long history of black characters, especially notably self-assured ones, making use of illeism. (Like Raqueletta Moss from She's Gotta Have It) Its a really common trope painting her in the "strong independent black woman" stereotype and comes off as cool because well... she is. She's a legitumate strong independent black girl who also pokes a little fun at the stereotype.

I think. the reason why #5 refers herself in the 3rd person is because her older sister cree might've been an operative before and when she was just starting out her and cree would get mixed up by the other operatives so to combat this #5 talks in the 3rd person to help her fellow operatives to remember who they're talking to

Numbuh 5 is one my favorite characters from Codename Kids Next Door. I always wondered why she referred to herself by her codename when I was growing up as it wasn't till I got older that I noticed the difference between when she did it around her teammates who knew her codename and in her homelife with the people who knew her real name. I find it awesome this was done for Numbuh 5 that speaks loudly on her character for how smart and cool she has been shown to be throughout the series. But nice job on this video!

For Example "MR T dont take no Trash Talk" or "I pity the fool who thinks he can take MR T in a fight". Sadly, i Cannot find ANY Recordings of that interview... but it makes sense. Shes A Parody, like all the others.

That she is older also explains why she seems to have so much more back history than the rest. She's the only one with Villains more or less specific to her (Stickybeard, Heinrich Von Marzipan.*) And the fact she is somehow involved in whatever made Numbah 1 bald, but not the rest of the KND (since they don't seem to know) also seems to indicate that those three previous years were pretty packed.

The last theory of self-doubt could be supported, as Numbuh 5 feared being a leader again. Nigel was permanently made bald because she didn't help him, which she said she could never forgive/forget. This means she couldn't forgive herself for not helping and still blames herself. However, did she always refer to herself in the third person, or did it only after that incident that she stepped down as leader of sector V? If we knew that, we'd have a significant puzzle piece.

Chad Dickson (Numbuh 274) is a Teens Next Door/current Kids Next Door operative, an undercover/false Teen Ninja, a false villain on the show, and the son of Mega Mom and Destructo Dad. This means that by referring to herself in the third person, as in the "Numbah 5 IS allergic to drowning" case, she could give her statement more authority and get the team to follow her, just in case there was any hesitation among the rest.

the reason abby stepped down from the leader position is because last time she was leader, she took a bad decision that lead to Nigel's baldness. In op fountain, she says it was a big mistake to not help a kid who was kidnapped by the Delightful Children and Nigel confirmed what resulted in that decision. In op feral, she says she doesn't want to be leader again, especially after what happened last time. In the sooper secrets and boomerang bloopers book, it confirmed that it was indeed a decision she made as sector leader. So she stepped down because the pressure to be a leader was too high for her.

I never understood that though, because in Op TREATY one of the final episodes. Numbuh 1 was already bald when they found him, and Cree was still the leader then. So like is that the same “incident” that they refer to as to why she doesn’t want to lead, or did something else happen ?
@fallengabrielle5185

@@dontworry8963 yes it is the same incident, becasue it is confirmed in canon medias (see the references i put up there): she doesn't want to be leader anymore because she took a bad decision when she was it, and that decision resulted in Nigel's baldness, the end. the flashback in operation treaty can totally happen after nigel's kidnapping. Because the flashback only shows nigel's training and it's not about abby "finding" him. Cree being there doesn't mean she was still leader, she could have left the position to abby and remained a knd operative in another department before her eventual betrayal. It is nowhere said that Cree was sector leader at this point.

Eventually all KND operatives become traitors after turning 13. They could either erase their memory and join the teens or escape with all their secrets and join the teens, hardly any ever leave the fight and live a normal life. Just like the sleepover episode when number 86 was betrayed by another operative who confess she will soon turn 13 and will join the teens sooner or later and decided to join sooner. This is why KND has secret operatives who keep their memories and join the teens as a spy on the inside. Maurice was a teen spy who referred number 5 as a candidate for when she turns 13.

It's less turned traitor and more it's an eventuality that all kids eventually grow up and join the adults and teenagers (except for very rare occasions). It's a perpetually losing battle that they continue to fight regardless.

I think it's the parents constantly referring themselves in the third person that she picked up on..at the end of the day she is a genius and Nigel uno and her friends which is a great thing.
