Sto player here: ups for the game are like so- you can earn a free t6 promo ship every year due to the year long campaign hosted every year. Crafted [pen] weapons are currently one of the top weapons in the game and lockbox stuff can be purchased on the exchange for energy credits. We also get give aways every year so you'll always get somthing. Downside is shields suck hard, theres no real dil sink to buy stuff with(besides phoenix upgrades) and the over hard grinding). If your in for the long haul then its 100% worth it. Especially if you wanna try your hand at space magic

I've been on STO for about 9 years now. The game is heavily monetized, but you can still get T6( end game) ships for free. Yes, the "best" ships can be bought, but you can make it through most content with a free ship. It's a good mmo but far from the best.

I found it impossible to get from lol 60 to 65 without upgrading my gear to the highest tier by paying, and buying multiple tier 6 ships so I could have traits good enough to take on the enemies on normal difficulty. Even then I still died a lot and didn't do a lot of damage. To do a "lot" of damage I need to grind out endeavors for two years straight to get a 50 percent bonus to all damage and defense

Why do I still play STO? Well, that's because every Sunday evening around 630-7 pm, I stop being me, and I become General Kragh, commander of the IKS ngo'Ghlth (Old Targ, in English) Klingon warrior, veteran of the Dominion War, scourge of any and all buffet tables and Bloodwine barrels, and occasionally an emissary to our on again-and-off again best-frenemies over in Starfleet. With my trusty compatriots in the Brotherhood of Ra'ji, we sometimes sally forth to do battle with the enemies of the Empire, and other times we meet and tell tales of old battles with some old acquaintances in Starfleet. Really though, we have a small group of about 10-12 people that do in-game roleplay for a few hours about every week. With the ability to interact cross-faction on some of the neutral planets and stations, we even have little events where we have 5-6 people on our Klingon characters have "diplomatic events" with some of our other members' Fed characters. My main character (and only max-level) is Kragh though, so I am always playing as him. Sometimes we all get together and do some Fleet PVE, always "in character" though, and usually tied to in-game events. It's honestly pretty fun.

I got a lifetime membership to the game way back in the day, and I still find the spaceship combat to be the most fun spaceship combat in any space based MMORPG currently out there (although the DPS meta destroys a lot of the fun in build making). My issue with it is that all the new star trek shows are so awful that they have completely killed my interest in the game when they were shoehorned into it.

Same, STO lifer from back in the days of the beta. I have so little interest in it now, I mean, as soon as you stick your nose outside ESD what do you see? Starships from other factions sliding around Scimitars, Ferengi maurauders, Risan pleasure craft, smoking heavily assimilated (borg equipment set) TOS constitution class ships, JJVerse ships, TIME SHIPS.... At the very least those should never have been allowed, slight SHATTERING of the temporal prime directive huh? Just allowing people to fly around in ships from the future. Some of the more interesting missions got scrubbed out ages ago, anyone remember the mission where you had to sort out a mining dispute by talking to people and actually READING WHAT THEY HAD TO SAY? And you did need to, because you'd be asked questions about how they felt afterwards. Not just run here, shoot this, shoot this, click this, run here, leave mission. My biggest downer was when they overhauled the crafting system. My veteran admirals, master crafters, suddenly had NO crafting ability what so ever, and no compensation. Every new system they'd bring in, my verterans got left further and further behind, because I just didnt want to grind for dozens of hours to get them back to where they already were.

@@alexandrumacedon291 exy dmg torp is a thing. Or simply "Maelstrom torpedo", is the current meta. You can google up some videos on it if you really want. Other than that, you're needing tech upgrades, get yourself a very rare (dark purple) item, either dual bank beam / dual heavy cannons, upgrade them to mk15 'xv', keep upgrading until you turn them gold (very rare to ultra rare to legend.) You can buy a phoenix box for 4,500 refined delithium. ; ) Put your ore into that and you can use the rare (downgrade if needed) to get the 2 upgrades, those don't use del. Keep doing that until all your gear is legendary mk15. Takes a long time (10 days is 80,000 refined delithium. Buy zen with del, you'll need some 360,000 del. But building up to 3,000 zen for a t6 ship really helps. I've only done it the free way, both on STO and neverwinter (the other game cryptic runs.)) You can also look into the exchange for them too (prepare to spend millions, lawls.) -- An easy money way right now is playing a few delta chars(event right now) to lv60 for the free boxes and money. Bank it and make a new one. ; )

Thank's for an interesting video and outside perspective on this game. I'm playing since 2016 on free to play account and somehow I'm still finding a bit fun from it. In case of payable content - since the introduction of Mudd's Store and Aniversary ships bundle's (although the cost is still high) I don't see any reason to spend cash on lockboxes (or to be precise keys to them) since the odds of scoring anything of value could be measured in parts per million not even percents and majority of the content is obtainable at in game exchange in currency that is ralitvely easy to obtain - energy credits. Also there are viable alternatives in form of 3 to 4 event's during the year that also allows to earn decent starship or a year long event that allows you to claim lock box starship by participating in selected events (in theory the best stats vise T6 ships) or 2 ships from Z-store. Other big plus in my opinion is that by using equipment sets from mission rewards or reputation system you can easily do normal and advanced content in pve (sometimes even elite if the build is good and You know how the ingame systems works), but majority of elite content and pvp requires investment of time or money in obtaining decent gear, ships and traits to have some fun. Storywise I really like the newer content from 'New Frontiers' up to 'Klingon Civil War' story arc (currnet somehow irritates me mainly beacuse it's related to Mirror Universe) and few earlier story arcs like 'Solanae Dyson Sphere', 'Delta Quadrant' (it looks a bit obsolete nowdays but it was the nostalgia overload back in 2016) and 'Future Proof'. Some of them really aged poorly mainly from visual point of view and requires polishing but are still decent stories. it's also worth to mention that 'Gamma Quadrant' story arc (currently my favorite) has probably last Star Trek related performance of Aron Eisenberg and René Auberjonois as Nog and Odo. As per minuses and iritating features - since it is quite an old game nowadays there is a lot of various systems that grows around it for last 13 years and still majority of them requires progression (reputation system, endeavours, traits on certain ships, some items from R&D system and etc.); there is also power creep - ammount of equipment and ships that were added since going full F2P model is staggering and curent Event or Zen Store ships can easilly outperform in almost all aspects early T6 ships, even those from lockboxes; finally there is permanent dilithium grind - every upgrade requires it either for obtaing the token or to pay for the costs of applying it, except that also reroling of modifiers consumes dilithium, fleet upgrades and of course dilithium to Zen exchange.

Started playing 4 months after the game launched . It was my first and only MMO, and as such I used my uber noob powers to run around the maps for 6 months in the first year . I haz exploring . I found nuttin ! 2 weeks before something very bad happened, I purchased a lifetime subscription . Until then it was a 15$ a month access to play . 2 weeks later began the year that we fans affectionately refer to as The Year of Hell (a title of a two parter from Voyager) -- where Atari turned off the cash flow, and unknown to us the conversion under the hood to Free to Play began . By then I was a bit tired of running around and so it was End Game (4 whole Dungeons of 2-3 hours each) that along with PVP (which was still playable at the time) made my 2nd year a much better experience than for those who practically ran to End Game 2 seconds after they started playing . The Dungeons (then called STF's -- as in special task force operations) were built by some experienced programmers of the generic 3 Classes style (warrior, healer mage , tank) , and they were quite difficult in places as OP gear was still far away in the game . However this quality programming wasn't appreciated by the majority of the Easy Mode / coffee break Trek fans who were not really obsessive gamers as such . Thus, by the time the game went F2P, these Dungeons were cut up and simplified as short Raids -- recently renamed to TFO's . The F2P launch was either close to or after Cryptic got sold to PWE , and a decent cash infusion followed that gave the game (finally) a decent Klingon faction beginning story , and the game's first Expansion that included playing as Romulans (sort of ... as this takes place after the destruction of the Romulan home world, and after a while you have to choose to ally with either the Klingons or the Federation) . We call these half-Factions "fractions" for this reason -- but this over tge years gave Cryptic the option to add playable Jem'Hadar, TOS and Discovery Federation starter missions as well, adding a diverse starting experience to players, even if after certain points you have to join Team Red or Blue . I share much of what you said about the monetization, so I have not much to add there , with the exception that unlike some games & MMO's -- you can play all of the content of STO (star trek online) for free . You get enough gear and ships as you leave to do the content in both Easy and Advanced mode . Elite difficulty does require some (a lot) of advanced gear, some of which is available to earn & upgrade, some of which is cash shop / Dilithium grind . There is no I Win button, ship or single gear . Advanced and Elite content relies a lot on a harmony of different components & gear . Pvp ... unlike what you stated is a bit of a shit show . But there are players looking to teach others ... sometimes . The additional minus here is that the game has implemented a ... set of rotating missions that grant permanent buffs, and playing daily, finishing this system (that was designed to keep players logging back in) -- well it takes about 2.5-3 years to finish . This means that long time players & PvP players will have a number of stronger buffs , depending on how religiously they logged in daily . This doesn't effect Normal and Advanced Pve much, but it's... it's a problem in PvP . Not gonna lie . All in all STO is a nice place to hang, especially for 30-50+ aged gamers . The most basic hub for the Fed's doesn't quite reflect this (a lot of shit posting in zone chat) , but there are your established Guilds (Fleets) that can make your experience a lot more wholesome . I'm currently in the 44th Fleet . Come by, say hi ! See our website for details .

A few things to note. 1. The game does include an fps mode by hitting B on your keyboard (for PC players) 2. Lockbox keys can be bought with in game currency 3. Throughout the year, they do tons of events and giveaways that include ships and other things for all players. 4. You can do everything in game without spending a single penny and there are far fewer restrictions than just about any other mmorpg 5. They partner with groups like Alienware and Steelseries to do free giveaways regularly. 6. Ground combat can actually be tons of fun depending on how you build...i.e. grenades, turrets, etc.

I'm a lifetime member and tbh STO isn't a bad game, it's worth playing but saying that I just wish they would upgrade the ground graphics like modernize it a bit more because it does got potential to get better like for those of us who do got the lifetime membership it would be a complete waste to to keep adding on to the the game without upgrading the ground graphics or adding more levels to the ship so its not you visiting the bridge only.. the stories are really good, I just feel like we should be able to do more exploring different planet's instead of just doing patrols. My opinion upgrade the ground combat & characters, I'm mean to have a lifetime subscription you can't totally leave the game the way it is, I have been playing for quite sometime and I upgraded my console to a Series X, so like to upgrade the who game would be perfect especially the ground combat.

I never touch the lootbox keys because there's no guarantee on getting what you want at all. Fortunately the game gives away T6 coupons and such about three times a year, just for participating in events. And yes, this being solid _Trek_ with enjoyable story is why _STO_ has a stable, if comparatively small population. I've been playing for... four years, maybe? I got the Lifetime Subscription at half off. Completely worth it since the dilithium exchange rate for zen is completely crazy: the max is 500, and it's at 500. But still, the game gives you what you need to play through the story, and you can do the TFOs without feeling like you're completely dragging people down. The only zen shop items you really need are the EC cap increases and the account shared bank. Everything else, you can do without, and you get enough character slots to try every faction's story, and then a bit.

Maybe I'm biased due to how young I was when this game first released (begged my parents for lifetime back in the day lol), but boy was it fun in the early days when Cryptic still owned the studio and before the game would fundamentally change into what it has become. Back when there was just the Federation, and the KDF; Memory Alpha was the place to go for crafting and you had better hope you can outrun the Crystalline Entity while going there. Finally completing the three operations and getting your borg set bonus for your ship was the end goal and boy was it an amazing feeling of achievement. Once Dan Stahl left and the game was bought out by Perfect World things changed quickly; some good, some bad. This is when the lootbox and monetization started, and the game turned more into a themepark MMO than anything resembling a game with high difficulty PvE encounters and PvP rankings. But maybe that's just what the game should be! Patiently waiting for a new Star Trek themed MMO with better graphics and a fresh story (fully expecting to be waiting a loooong time). Great video; thanks for the nostalgia hit and showcasing some of the changes that have been made in the last few years.

I've been playing the game for...at least a year now, on my X-Box One. And I have to say...outside of just occasional moments of buying the lower amounts of zen with real money when i had a bit of extra cash, I've done almost no monetary buying while playing it. Honestly, I think people can play the game without paying any money at all. Sure, it speeds up how quickly you can get your hands on things from the Zen store, but in all honesty, the number of free Tier 6 ships I got from doing events, the free Tier 6 ship coupons that keep getting dropped as rewards for an event or a promotional, it make it really easy for me to get some really good ships for my characters, and grind out dilithium for Zen to buy more stuff from the Zen store. All pretty much for free, save for the time and effort I put in. If you're willing to put in the effort, the game can be pretty much free all the way across. Its only the really large bundles in the Zen store that you have no hope of purchasing without real money, and I really only see those as something hardcore Trekkie or gamers will go for. As for actual game, and not just the monetary side of it, it is a lot of fun. I love getting to pilot my starship, add new weapons and consoles and cosmetics, coming up with a new name for each ship to fit the theme I have for that character. The ground combat can be kind of tedious, but I make up for it with characters I enjoy admiring and looking at, so it makes up for the stretches of having to shoot at some annoying group of enemies. That said though, there are some annoyances though. A few missions, at least on the XB1, can be buggy,, to the point of being forced to restart the mission over and over again a few times. Most of them don't have this problem, but still. Overall though, I do greatly enjoy the game. I think it'll be something I'll keep enjoying being able to play, especially if they do release more story missions down the line, since they just recently finished their current arc, the Terran Gambit.

I have never opened a loot box, but they are annoying to delete because they drop everywhere. I can play at the highest level without ever paying real money. On the flip side this tells you how easy the game is. The most difficult content is easy. I absolutely agree with IGN when they say it feels like it's two game meshed together. ground combat is very clunky and very buggy, it feels like ground combat was an afterthought, they created this game based around an awesome space combat system, then realised sometimes you would need to be on the ground and fighting and threw something together. As to the value of the lifetime subscription, as someone who bough the game at launch and has a lifetime subscription, i can safely say it was the best purchase I've made over my many years of playing MMO's. While I've not played it solidly for the whole thirteen years, I do play it on and off as a filler game when i get burnt out in other MMO's and that lifetime sub has more than paid for itself multiple times over. A quick tip with regards to it "feeling like it should be FPS", you can actually play it in a kind of FPS mode, if you press the B button on the ground it puts you into a free target mode, and you can scroll into first person. Boom, much better gameplay instantly. With regards to the monetization, i think it's a pretty fair monetization system that they have, it's not hard to farm dilithium if you want to pay for store items with time rather than spend money, the T6 ships aren't that different that there's a best in slot you have to buy, plus you can get a handful of T6 ships in game through missions and events, so overall it doesn't feel heavily monerized to me.

Star trek online use to be far more massive than it is not, they even removed harry and belona daughter from the game and that was my favorite episode to play because well it made me feel as if it was like a passing of the torch moment how it should've been for all of Picard. It had an incredible amount of balance in terms of old and new even martok the butcher needed to be saved from the breen prison camp for him and worf actions during the dominion war. And when you use to play as a Klingon pretty much you played as a dishonored Klingon looking to regain his honor and Alexander future self in TNG he becomes that person and helps a lot along the way they really changed a lot their seasons use to be like the original TV show it use to be like 21 to 25 episodes in each and every single season then they got into contract with bad screw ups and then that when every single thing in the game started to change worf had a wife and again and his brother regained his memories of being house of mogh is they had computer control battle of him fighting I think some alien. It was crazy sick captain nog I think counselor Jake sisqo I do wish before it's too late that captain sisqo will at least come from out of the worm hole at long last or do some kinda special on it and keep it out of bad remakes ever hands

Saving grace I think regarding STO's monetization is they are always running events to give away free gear and even ships (this year it was possible to earn 5 total ships without spending a dime). Between that, the reputation system, mission rewards and even some third party giveaways, it is possible to earn all the gear one needs to do very well in the hardest content STO has to offer. If you want to go meta chasing however....that may well cost you quite a bit. The fanboy in me got me buying more than a few ships and such, but I enjoy it. Btw..if you do dive into a lifetime sub or anything really in the cash shop.....be patient and wait for a sale...they come up often enough.

Heavy monetization in a Star Trek game, so ironic. I always hated how canon ships and uniforms are often in r&d packs and lockboxes, which should only be used for "special" ships, never common stuff from the shows.

I honestly wish someone did a single-player Star Trek with up-to-date stats like Starpoint Gemini or Star Citizen tier stuff. Well, not really Star Citizen but Starpoint Gemini is a good example/start. And added as much stuff as the online version does. Exploration being its main theme. Well, more or less. I honestly had greater hopes for this game and expected more since I started playing around 2012/2013 but the game unfortunately remained a bit the same. At least Warframe was always with me since 2013/2014.

STO is good if you want a quick Star Trek fix at the MMO level. Anything else and it's not really worth it. Even the Space Barbie: SPACE is nice and has a lot of options though they stopped making bridges for ships a while ago at a regular clip. Space Barbie: Ground is limited by categories for outfits. There are so man restrictions on how you can mix and match things it's not funny. Also if you play KDF you get the extra restriction of having an aweful color selection to choose from for most outfits.

I was making good money at the time and bought the lifetime membership. It was a great move, over the years I jump back into the game and see what is new fly around live my Klingon Fantasy and then uninstall and come back in a year or so. There just are not a lot of places to go for good Sci-fi MMO, I do the same with SWTOR I just wish there had been a life time sub with SWTOR

I can't speak for the old hands, but as a new player who only started Star Trek Online a few weeks ago, I'm really enjoying it! Yeah, the ground missions are a bag of shite (though the later, newer missions are bearable and in all credit to the developers, probably about as good as they can be with the tools they have to work with) and the absolute lack of tutorials for anything outside of the basics is a nightmare for a new player too. But, with a bit of time, patience and perseverance, there's a bloody good space combat game in there and the stories themselves certainly feel very Star Trek. I'd describe myself as a casual Trek fan at best, but certainly not someone who's dedicated to the franchise. Love the original Kirk Trek and I'm familiar enough with the TNG era to know who's who and which characters fit into which series. I'm completely lost with the new era Trek though. Thought the films were dumb, shouty, flashy affairs that seemed to throw decades of character development right out of the window (the emotionally disciplined Spock in the new ones for example, what the...?! That version of Spock is the least emotionally balanced character...of ANY character...in the entire bloody films!) and I've yet to make it past the first few episodes of the new collection of series too. I haven't bothered with the animated show at all, have still to give Steange New Wolds a go, gave up on Discovery long before season 2 started and only managed the first few episodes of Picard before bailing on that one too (though, I have been talked into giving season 3 a chance...I'm enjoying it so far). I guess it's as a result of that that I don't recognise some of the ingame characters, ships or settings, but it's not spoiling the playing experience by any means. So, as a casual Trek fan coming into the game so late in its life, yeah, I'd say it's still worth playing.

I've been a lifetime subscriber for about seven years and still play the game, just not as enthusiastically as before. The developers seemed to have switched their focus from putting out new content to just selling new reskinned versions of old ships (legendary) for real money. If people play for free then the game is still fun and I'd recommend it, but the monetization does get old.

As an avid Star Trek fan, this game kept calling to me but I could never get past level 10, because the structure of the game is quite janky in many aspects. That being said, I recently started playing again and I'm finally starting to figure out the basics. I've got a lieutenant commander at level 15 and feel like I finally know what I'm doing. (for the basics) Space battles are the best part of the game for me. Ground combat is still clunky and cringy at times. Star Trek unfortunately doesn't have a lot of games. The ones that have been made aren't great, sadly.

Short answer yes, as it is still a funish game to experience the story and meet the new characters from STO and plenty of ships you can fly to your hearts content. But.. the story telling has suffered *A LOT* and I can not emphasize that enough since the new shows started. Sadly Cryptic chose to dumb down their dialogue and plots to match the intellectual dregs of secret hideout. The characters spout drivel usually reserved for drugged out 90's street teenagers. It's embarrassing sometimes.

The Stories are interesting. The groundbattle sucks hard and you notice that from the first second your on Ground, while Space is kinda fun and feels smooth. Once done with the Stories, youve basically seen the Game and there is nothing left except upgrading your Ship and repeat, repeat, repeat. So the Point is to get your Ship stronger, while there is no Endgame where you can shine with that new Equip. The only thing what dragged me into STO is the fact, its Star Trek. But that beeing said, there is nothing new to discover once your done with the Story. So in my humble opinion, STO was not worth playing when it launched and its still utterly pointless to do so in 2023.

ummm.... the majority of T6 Ships in the Zen shop ARE NOT the best ships, not the best variant of said ships anyway, because most of them have Fleet T6 variants that are better and the things you need in order to buy them can be gotten for free. One of the few reasons to buy them might be the consoles or traits but they are not a necessity. STO is not pay to win, its pay a lot of money for convenience.

Yeah, so those T6 ships you saw for $30 that you thought were endgame? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAno. Endgame is a premium ship that can only come from a lootbox (odds are around 0.5% for a drop, so figure $200). To get a META setup, you need several such ships for traits, consoles, etc that are unobtainable by any other means, so you're really looking at $500-$1000 for *a* ship fully kitted out. The game has boiled down over the past 13 years such that it is now populated by whales and Trek fans. The monetization is rapacious and absolutely out of control.
