Neverwinter is a MMORPG based upon the popular fantasy board game Dungeons and Dragons. It was once Josh Strife Hayes favourite MMO to play and even boasts over 2 Million Players. Released in 2013, it is now nearing 10 years old, but the question remains, is it still worth playing in 2023?

The game USED to be experience based. But when they did the level crunch (max level used to be 70), they made the game more in accordance with the Pencil & Paper's game mechanic of level 20 being max level. In the process, it was decided to change it to a milestone system rather than experience based.

In order to feel like your starting to get somewhere in Neverwinter with your gear; you have to grind WAYY OUTDATED quests for seemingly (literary too perhaps) decades to try to avoid the paywall in order to simply get better gear after topping out your level; and go into the marketplace and sell sell sell; then BUY BUY BUY in order to get anything done with the character. It's wayyy too much Pay to Win BS for my liking; so I dumped it like a bad habit after playing for a while with some friends.

I actually played the Beta in this game and also remember when you could make your own quest for other people to enjoy which was unique and amazing and the community created some stunning content for this game! I also remember it changing over time and getting very frustrated with the monetization. I think it's still worth enjoying the stories but I also would not recommend trying to do endgame or engage in the predatory systems.

As a former hardcore MMORPG gamer who now has a little time to play, I enjoyed getting back into Neverwinter recently. Like most people say, the combat system is really fun and engaging. And I'm not at a point in my life where I can really invest in deep stories anymore. So I don't know, it scratches an itch for me. The monetization thing doesn't really bother me, because I'm not really interested in "being the best." I literally just enjoy the gameplay.

@@forsak3n749 For me, it's because I now have a child, and my wife and I both work, so we have to share the childcare duties. Honestly, It's all about what you're replacing gaming with. Sure gaming is entertaining, I still enjoy it, but there's nothing lasting about it. You're not actually accomplishing anything. Being married and becoming a father has given me a deeper purpose in life to where I'm not really missing the fact that I can't game as much. I'm going to go against the general consensus in here. I'm a 3 year deep long term player. I have a 72k item level and that's not item level chasing. That's Primal boots, Demo set, journal artifacts, serene hood of the dragon etc etc and so forth. I have good gear, my stats are good, my enchants are mythic, I have the du jour companions, I have probably 100 VoS completions, ToMM, Master Tiamat, CoK (yes thats a real trial abbreviation for the non players reading.... watching callouts when it was new was hilarious).... and so forth. Only dungeon I haven't touched is MToS. And still it is a very lonely game unless you are sweaty dps or have a clique to play with. I'm not finished my T3 dragon hunts because I literally have spent hours, yelling into the void of my zone, alliance and "looking for group" chat.... and I can count on one hand how many times I've gotten picked up. Also if you are a DPS role be prepared to wait a long time to get into higher level content, they're a dime a dozen and getting picked up for anything without an "in" connection, has only slightly better odds than finding a needle in a haystack. Oh yeah and you'll be waiting anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour or more to get a random queue to pop. So yeah if you can rub elbows with the elite and schmooze enough to make friends, you could go far. Also be prepared for everyone to have something critical to say about your build... even if you follow all the guides and critiques you get from people trying to help you, even if youre pulling decent damage.... you will still get some elitist telling you that your build is all wrong. Honestly I love the questing part and the dungeons are fun, there are good people on the game.... but it also can be a really toxic community full of bullies and middle aged people running guilds like exclusive clubs.

The monetization is less than others out there, but I can see where some may be turned off by it. I used to spend about $30/year for VIP and to support a title I enjoyed. When they did the major combat changes (mod 15?,) I quit spending any money on it. I actually got much better when I had to grind out AD and am now a solid end-gamer for the last 5 mods. My problem with the pay-to-win folks is that they don't know the content and end up screwing up runs. I think this has caused a serious decline in public queues. As far as voice goes, I am one that mutes players with their mics on. I use Discord for voice. Great video, well balanced review.

I have played Neverwinter a LOT in the past, as F2P and knowing exactly how the game works (and lot's of grinding) made it possible to be maxed in gear for many years. I didn't play for an entire year, I just logged and I could still max my gear with all the currency I have saved in the past (not considering of course the gear you can obtain only grinding). Also: if you spend in 1h enough to max your character, still that doesn't mean you will be good, cause you might not know how to play it. Grinding the content was the thing that gave much expirience and make me change my rotations as I noticed something worked better. The battle engine is fun, I can suggest the game if someone doesn't necesseraly want to be competitive and just run missions and explore until you get bored

I have been playing Neverwinter for 5 years. Let me just say... as a long time player, without spending a TON of money I am only just starting to consider myself end game worthy. You do get a free key everyday if you buy VIP. And you can (in theory) buy VIP with in game currency. Getting in game currency has become nearly impossible. I usually spend about 10 bucks a month to keep my VIP updated. Meanwhile, you grind and grind and grind to get the astral diamonds you need to do anything. At some point it just gets very tedious. That said, I am obsessed and addicted to this game. The community does have some toxic people in it... like all games for the most part, but I have found some very good gaming buddies that I love running content with and the campaigns are fun. So, for the most part, it is worth it. :)

You can do it if you plan ahead. It's easy within 3 months to get enough Astral Diamonds to exchange for enough Zen to buy 3 months VIP. It just takes a few months in the exchange. I put AD into the exchange when I get the Zen out. This means I've always got VIP. No actual money spent.

Being an end game player of this game, I will admit that ranking up in this game can indeed feel lonely. But if you have a friend group or a guild that will level up with up, this game is soooo fun. I’d do anything to go back in time to experience this game as a beginner with my friends. End game is where most people are and once you get there the social world will open up and the community is really nice for the most part. Lastly, this game is pay to win UNLESS you are willing to Grind super hard. If you’re going to buy anything, just buy VIP because it gives you store discounts and a free lockbox key per day.

It's not even play to win, there are so many gotcha RNG curses that even hundreds of dollars in upgrades can be nullified by other group members who did something cryptic deems a "balancing element" before they even entered the dungeon with you Such things can include crafting, participating in events, claiming rewards from progress, changing companion powers, etc etc. A completely unprofessional approach to online gaming and most definitely a reason to never spend a dime on this online claw game

I'm a 8 year player. 2-3 years ago I would say the game was not pay to win, it was pay for convenience. Today the game is definitly pay to win. Hiwever the comment about I can spend enough and be more powerful then you within the hour isnt true at all. Most end game gear has to be earned. There is now way to buy them as they are bound to account on pick up. You could buy yourself up to the gear score needed for advanced dungeons but being that it will have to be earned. I dont play the game much anymore. I check out and run through the new modules. I would say if it's a world you're interested in and dont care about running the absolute end game content sure go ahead. Just know if you plan on running the hardest content you aren't doing it without spending a fair amount of cash.

I have over 1100 hours in the game. And I can confirm that you will not be able to be top tier competitive without spending hundreds of dollars. On top of that you really do need vip which if you buy it monthly is pretty expensive, but if you buy the 6 month pack it’s idk a little less. Honestly, I love the game but the feature creep that forces you to both grind and spend a lot of money is very tough for me to continue with. I really don’t mind a reasonable subscription and cosmetics for a game. But I don’t like wards that cost like $10 each that are absolutely required to upgrade your gear and there are so many prices that need to be upgraded multiple times you will end up spending ridiculous amounts of money. I know, I did it back in the day. I just decided to quit for a second time because I was grinding for hours a day on all my alts and was still nowhere near having enough astral diamonds to afford the wards I needed in the auction house. Sad, but I won’t spend that much real world money on a game that is losing popularity consistently over time.

Sawman I played this game through alpha, beta, and for about 2-3 years after launch. My biggest complaints was the old mandatory monetization, they have upgrade mechanics that made you have to buy certain things from the cash shop to upgrade enchantments I mean technically you could upgrade without the CS items but it had a chance to fail that was MUCH larger than success. You basically had to buy the CS item or risk losing the enchantment. You could and still can use real money currency to gear out with nearly top gear immediately after hitting max level. My Biggest complain and what ultimately drove me away from the game was Time Gated DLCs, it made you run and rerun a daily quest (3 days in a row) before you can advance to the next step of the story of the DLC, and there was like 5-6 steps to finish the DLC story. I hated it, it was such a let down! Recently though my young son wanted to play a fun D&D based video game, so I loaded this one for him and I realized they have overhauled almost the entire game. Gone was the time gated content, and the monetization was there but way less required but not obnoxiously in your face that you HAD to pay the money. Anyways I decided to give it another go and I'm liking it so far and may end up playing it at least until Baldur's Gate 3 releases.

They did away with that system and then did away with the replacement system. They now have a system where you rank up your enchantment (still very expensive either on wallet or time spent) once the enchantment is mythic you can turn in it and get an account wide version. The biggest drawback to this is you cant sell it once you trade it in to be account wide version,.

I started playing it a few days ago, following the quest line, had some random interactions with people on the same quest, it's f2p so it is what is! Can't really see me spending anything on it tbh, I'll just take whatever gear/armour I'll pick up! Just wish you could remove the vip/store ad on the right hand side of the screen

The reason this game gets bad reviews is it is being played by gamers not D&D players. They are not interested in the gameplay/journey, they just want to "win". I don't mean they want to work with you to win. I mean they want to beat you. In a co-op game? That is why they are not chatting or letting you (a new player) join in, in a group dungeon. I would have to say, at least on Playstation, if you just start talking to everyone in a Dungeon, you will get a conversation. So many people have the mic on and just don't talk. I would also say, it is truly weird to have a game that is free to play, but costs you money if you don't want to play it. Who was in that marketing meeting and how did they make that work?

A lot of people saying this game is P2W, that’s completely wrong. You can grind and use your brain to make money in the game. But usually people are lazy enough to think. Also, being an end game means you know mechanics and master the class you are playing. But again, people are lazy enough to use the brain.

The actual problem with the Zen market is the fact that nothing in it is good , nothing has value in the cash shop except VIP witch is like your average subscribtion to a game , like 9e/month , + about 90% of BiS items cant be bought , you have to play the game ( and play it a lot ) to get the best stuff in the game , the Josh argu is wrong . You can pay to be stronger , but after like 500e there is nothing else you can buy to be stronger . And trust me even after thoses 500e your character will be dogshit. Neverwinter is more a cash bait than a pay to win game , if you are stupid you will probably fall into the bait , then you will use a lot of cash , and then you will realise that your character is still useless and nobody wants to play with you because they know you are a whale , then you will just quit the game and say everywhere you can thats its a pay to win game

I played the game since Beta (April 2013) and stopped playing around 2017 because of the monetization and direction it was going with it. I played many other MMORPGs and at the end. I returned now to Neverwinter. The reasoning behind it was, like all MMORPGs are a Monetization Cesspool. I played World of Warcraft and that game wanted 40 € upfront and 13 € per month in addition had an ingame shop and many problems that Neverwinter actually doesn't have. The positive on Neverwinter is that i can now just play it. There is no money involved. Yes i progress way slower. But at the end, i can decide to spend, even with all the monetization shenaningans.

I guess I shouldn't complain as I used to play $15-20/mo for a few MMO's years ago. In the early 2000's. This game is actually a TON of fun but I do think you really do have to spend a few bucks, not a lot to really get everything out of it. I chose not to and eventually quit after most people chose not to and quit as well. There's no free lunch really and that's okay. There's value in that game or at least there used to be when it came out many years ago.

Neverwinter and Star Trek Online have the same shady system, both published by Gearbox, free to play but really more fee to pay. Been playing Star Trek Online since it came out and if you don't spend any money in the game for Zen it's just impossible to play at high levels. Also in STO the elite queues for space missions aka elite / mythic dungeons are not frequently joined by anyone, have to wait about 2-3 hours to pop and when you do, the other players will be 2 shot by the enemy because there are no gear checks or item lvl requirements. Probably in Neverwinter you also need to buy some mount just for the trait that will be later used combined with something else from the store, for STO each ship has a trait that will make your beams, torpedoes or exotic damage hit harder, proc additional effects etc, so I'm guessing Neverwinter probably uses the same system. Best thing to avoid all them Gearbox online casinos.

I don't understand why so much people bash eso on monetization but everyone is like I cool if it's just cosmetics ,but that's it in eso besides xp scrolls but technically you can make xp pots so what does it matter I feel eso suffers from a lack of rewards to be earned in game like doing a Trifecta ( like f a title give me a pet or mount ) but when it come from monetization I look at the other games and company's out there , blizzard , Activision, ea , Terra, neverwinter, destiny, black dessert online , and even (final fantasy online ) compared to others the monetization doesn't look that bad ...I think eso suffers from a list of other problems lack in pvp meaning like new zone or etc , dynamic meta changes every 3 mth which forces people to farm new gear and learn a whole new rotation which could change to a dynamic roto or a static , when less experience players can't even la weave good . My personal opinion I think bringing oakensoul to game was a huge mistake now even why learn a roto just heavy attack . But monetization no I don't agree , I will agree that it does suck that most of the best cosmetics are in crown crates and shop , but there is nothing in that shop that could make you a more skilled player over another ..I've played eso since you could pre-order and have over 12000 hrs in game

Yeah, it’s unfortunate but it’s been my experience and almost any game that actually has that capability especially in games where it works really well when when fallout 76 came out everything was broken but the one thing that always worked really well and it was surprising was the boy that the proximity chat worked and people talk to ran up on people and you could talk to them But over the years not just an acting but in many games people don’t like to talk anymore they shut their lights off or if they are talking it’s in an external chat with just their friends people don’t it’s ironic as hell because the whole point of these games is the social aspect MMO‘s only exist as MMO‘s for Socialization Otherwise co-op is fine I mean you play by yourself and then you going to a queue to queue up for a dungeon and three other players join you you do your dungeon and then you go back to what you’re doing but in Evo or PG talking to other players and interacting in the game it is half the fun but nobody does it anymore in any game anywhere And seriously fly you to point the game that has some kind of proximity chat that people actually use

Sadly, I quit because of the over monetization as well. Same with ESO. It always trips me out when people will turn their nose up to games like FF14 because it has a sub fee but you can actually get the vast majority of things in game without constantly being funneled to a store, inconvenienced only to be pushed to pay for basic QoL, and no one can just swipe a card and be stronger than you. These F2P games actually tend to be more expensive in the long run and it's less fun. Once you get invested, you get more pushed to spend, single basic things are usually so overpriced, a skin can be more expensive than a sub or the price of a regular game. And all to play a game that's developed to purposely make you feel worse if you don't keep spending. ESO fell down that rabbit hole and it's just as sad.
