One constantly reads these stories of China's economic demise in the English language media. A quick look at the March 2024 figures of GDP growth reveals that China's growth is 4.7%, much higher than the Anglosphere countries: the US 2.9%, UK 0.3%, Canada 0.5%, Australia 1.1% and New Zealand 0.2%. Needless to say, GDP growth is the most used figure when assessing a country's economic health.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said China still had 600 million people whose monthly income was barely 1,000 yuan ($154). He said that was not enough to rent a room in a city. Because he said this publicly, he was pushed out as second in command in China. He died at age 68 or 2 years after being pushed out of the CCP's Politburo because he released the true statistic that 600 million Chinese lived in extreme poverty. That is almost double the population of the entire USA that has only 330 million people. Many people in China believe he was executed by the CCP by Xi's order. Do you really believe in any statistics from China. No one in the real world does. BEIJING (Reuters) - China's GDP figures are "man-made" and therefore unreliable, the man who is expected to be the country's next head of government said in 2007, according to U.S. diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks. Li Keqiang, head of the Communist Party in northeastern Liaoning province at the time, was unusually candid in his assessment of local economic data at a dinner with then-U.S. Ambassador to China Clark Randt, according to a confidential memo sent after the meeting and published on the WikiLeaks website. The U.S. cable reported that Li, who is now a vice premier, focused on just three data points to evaluate Liaoning's economy: electricity consumption, rail cargo volume and bank lending. "By looking at these three figures, Li said he can measure with relative accuracy the speed of economic growth. All other figures, especially GDP statistics, are 'for reference only,' he said smiling," the cable added. Chinese economic numbers, especially at the provincial level and lower, have long been viewed with suspicion by analysts. "That China's GDP is not reliable, especially for local GDP, that is nothing new," said an economist with a foreign bank who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of discussing top national leaders. "Some of the volume data, such as power and rail freight and even (bank) credit, are interesting because there is less incentive to massage them at the local level. But they reveal only part of the truth, not the entire truth," he said.

China was opened nationally in June 2020 just 2-3 months after COVID hit the country while Europe and the West was still ineffectively dealing with COVID till the end of 2022 ! The west media keeps harping why China was closed to foreigners is because western countries were not able to to effectively deal with COVID and they don't want foreigners coming into the country to reinfect the Chinese population. Even today China is still closed by limiting the number of oversea flights into the country from over 200 flights/week to around 20-30 flights/week. The "visa free" scheme is basically an attempt to help the tourists industry and local businesses while still maintaining and limiting the amount of foreigners from entering !

Yes but 10 years ago it was ridiculous to say, but today it might have some ground. It may not be crashing but is definitely slowing down harder than expected. Remember that China's gdp percapita is still not high, not enough to be classified as a high income country (must be above $ 14000), so a 4.7% GDP growth rate for China is considered concerning, while a 2.8% for America is considered decent.

You are right. With automation and transition away from labor Imtensive industries, China will not need the number of workers it does now to keep the production volume. I would like to add another point that is absent from the discussion among the "shrinking population" alarmists . And that is the mitigating effect of the size of the CURRENT Chinese population , and the concurrent size of the WORKING AGE population. (16-64) . The size of working age population matters when we discuss productivity One estimate from a Canadian think tank, published in January 2022, had the working age population at more than 800 millions in 2040 800 million is more than two and a half times than the TOTAL population of the home country of Gordon Chang, America. Has America or Britain ever needed an 800 million population to become the richest nations in the world? Why the fixation on the Chinese population shrinkage?

The west is in recession. China's GDP forecast is for 5% growth in 2024, the EU 0.2% and the US 2.5%. The first half of Chinese exports show a growth of 8%. All these indicators say that China is still growing albeit it currently has a housing problem. Too many homes empty because the purchasing of homes went to zero in an instant. Some people who lost their jobs, cannot pay for the mortgages and just walked away, no different than the US in 2008 and probably this year and next in the US as stores and businesses close for lack of business. US growth hinges on federal spending and more debt. Consumers have maxed out their credit cards and struggling to stay afloat.

When you judge a fish by how well it flies then of course it would look like a failure. All the Western Press are too focused on their normal ways to gauge an economy - GDP, housing price, consumption. And they are all measured in USD! So what happened when everything is half the price of US and Europe? How could the West then accurately measure the real economic activities that happens within China? The same 10 bottles of coke could be sold in US and in China but the monetary value exchanged in China would be 1/3 of that in US. So... Are the Chinese really consuming less? So what happens when you apply the same to everything? Is China really struggling or have they became so good at producing and delivering to the point that it's creating this mirage that even The West honestly couldn't see through? House prices is a reflection of scarcity. The less there are and the more people are fighting over for them the higher the price. And the West would sees this as a plus for their economy. And when China deflated its housing bubble (before it's bad enough to do irreversible damage), The West sees that as a bad thing. So the first time I visited China (in earnest) was 15 years ago. All the stores in the street had their lights turn off but their doors were open. I walked into one and asked if they are open and why the lights are off and the cashier was pretty bewildered: "Erm... Because it's daytime and there is light from the sun". That rely has helped me understand the Real China ever since. Stop assuming or judge based on perceptions. Take time to look at what they are doing and what's happening then work out for their reasoning for it.

Well said! The GDPs in the west are super inflated, lawyers can charge whatever they like, even a million dollars for a lawsuit case, but in China the lawyer fees are set and regulated by the government, usually equivalent to just a few hundred US$. Another thing is the currency exchange rates that make the Chinese yuan at a much lower value than the currencies of the west., the only good thing about this for China is western countries rather buy things made in Chuna than to make themselves.

2:48 - yes China is facing steep demographic decline. But Japan & S Korea & Taiwan are all facing the same steep decline. That’s not the end of the world. It’s just a problem that calls for a certain type of macroeconomic solution. China can:- 1. increase immigration (which China is poor at doing because it’s difficult to learn Chinese and/or integrate into Chinese culture and lifestyle); or 2. Increase productivity through AI, robotics, automation, etc - which Japan, S Korea & Taiwan have done; or 3. Outsource its manufacturing to third countries with a young highly skilled population (Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Mexico etc) so that you incorporate that young workforce as part of your own production. This is also S Korea and Japan have done. So a sharp demographic decline is not necessarily fatal, as long as China avails itself of the same solutions (options 2 & 3) as what Japan and S Korea have done before it. This is not rocket science. Japan & S Korea have done it before… no reason why China would fail in diversifying this risk when there are clear precedents.

ignorant people always compare apples and orange, think about it, equal amount of USD1000 vs yuan 5000, which can buy more stuff, food and services, it is not just amount or numbers but the purchasing power of the currency, with high inflation and cost, even a lot of money do not go a long way, in a low cost low inflation economy, a little money goes a long way, so the quality of life actually is better due to ability to afford more stuff and services.
