Finally people are identifying the motifs and archetypes that make us love Star Wars. It is a direct reflection of the most basic of human struggles played out in a grand spectacle. Of course the lineage and becoming who you are is only one aspect that makes the seemingly strange space opera so poetic. I would say I learned a great deal as a small child watching these movies. I believe for all fathers out there, and fathers to be, this is something your children can learn a great deal from. It embodies complex ideas of morality, family, pain, struggle, and loss in a way that I would deem palatable and entertaining to even very young kids. Obviously being a fanboy myself I could be blinded by my love and nostalgia, but it is undeniable these movies evoke a really uncanny ability to teach lessons of humanity in a galaxy far far away.

I think the philosophy of the light side is very misrepresented. It's supposed to be a philosophy of balance, of the natural way. The Jedi aren't supposed to be good guys in the traditional sense. Their job isn't to go around saving everyone. They are only supposed to intervene when the balance of the force is upset. Anakin wasn't corrupted because he wanted to do bad. He was corrupted because he wanted to do good. Save his loved ones, destroy evil. A true Jedi would've respected the natural order, but Anakin thought he could shape the world to his whim, and that's all the seduction the sith needed.

I would say that it's not so diffrent, frommy own life experience with a somewhat problematic relationship to my dad (and an almost idolizing one to my granddad). The diffrence would be mostly that due to gender roles as a girl you are more easily able to dissociate your personality from your fathers. Which in turn leaves the same problems as described in the video, just with your mother.

1) he ended his life when I was 5, so 2) I really have no information on what traits of his I may possess. I did not have a replacement father figure. My mother never remarried. I've been very difficultly forging my own path. So for the most part, I can't really say if this video applies to me. If anything, the lack of a father figure, amplified my mother's traits as well as traits I desired in a father figure, were established in myself. But without an example to learn from, it's been a long hard road.

My dad was A very caring and loving man, but I realized early how weak he was and how miserable he became and want to be nothing like him. I found that denying the ways I was like my father wasn't working, because I repelled people and reacted too emotionally and took things too personally. Losing friends being socially outcasted gave me the motive to grow beyond that to be better. So, my father is not my destiny. I don't believe in Destiny, I believe in Gravity.

-Accept that at some level you will still idolize your dad -Accept your dad is not perfect -Remember your values don't have to be the same as your dad. To be honest, as a therapist, there is truth in this and the reason is- we are learning creatures and we absorb what we see (especially from ppl we idolize). The only way around it is to go on an inner journey of self discovery and to question your own patterns that you view as part of life.❤ Edited: also if you don't like your father and you decided to be the opposite of him, as baby's we are tottaly helpless and dependent on those who take care of us, so also if you want to be the opposite of him, there are still behaviors you absorbed that are going to stick with you, unless you become aware to them and work on changing them. Coincidentally I've been doing this for a while. It has led me to -slowly but steadily- grow. And yes! The next video should be about the philosophy of the light side, and then you shoul'd do one about the dark side. And... -- POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT -- I think this trilogy centers around achieving true balance. Dark and light side as a whole. Like the Yin-Yang archetype, with Kylo's and Rey's own struggles and journeys through both sides of the force. Maybe you should do a Reylo video with that archetype and how they bond to each other in that manner.
@falcodarkzz7 жыл бұрын
At first the only way to survive is to accept and love your father as a child. Then, to carry the torch and step into territories he never explored, you must reject him. Then finally to attain balance you must return to him with love again, only it has depth now. An emotional bond formed between two human beings, not an idolisation. Imo, this last part is one of the hardest things a person can do, and I think few achieve it in a lifetime.

I have a weird relation with my father. While I love him very much, I feel like we're extremely incompatible in our way of thought, and It's been that way for a while. As I thought of role models when I was a kid, my father never really showed up, he never really embodied what I wanted to be, it was always my uncles or a teacher I had. I guess my character flaws developed from trying to not be him. He's organized, I'm messy, he's passive-agressive , I come off as overly-aggressive , he likes to avoid confrontation while I'm prettty argumentative, to name a few key differences. I still love him for what he is though, and that's what maters in the end, I just don't want to be like him when I'm his age( regarding my relations to other people and where I'm at in life).

I grew up with so much disdain for authority and resorted to violence so handle conflict, just like I learned at home. Thanks so much for making this. I’m a hard core Star Wars fan and I watch a lot of the theory videos and comment on KZbin quite a bit. I’ve said for a long time that Kylo is more like Han than Vader in his personality. A lot of fans don’t see it they just say “he’s a vader fanboy” I’ve always connected Luke and Kylo as having subverted fears. Luke was afraid of becoming just like Vader and Kylo is afraid he’ll never be as strong as Darth Vader. But you just confirmed why he’s wanting to he just like Vader and it’s out of denial to be like Han. He is just like Han though. From his inner conflict to his hilarious fits of frustration when things don’t go his way. I seriously believe Adam Driver was going for playing Kylo as being more like Han. His character is so interesting to me because he’s a horrible villain but I think he’s supposed to be. The whole time of my first viewing I kept thinking “this guy is not in the right place, he’s not doing what he’s supposed to be doing.” I think that’s the point of the character arc. I believe that Kylo is on a reverse Anakin from the prequels. Where Anakin went slowly to the dark, Kylo will go slowly to the light. As a fan though what do you think of a reverse Obiwan with Rey? Where Obiwan left Anakin to die and gave up on him broke from his attachment with him and let go of his compassion for him (biggest problem with the Jedi Order right? Lack of attachment) left him for dead, Rey will Right this wrong, her compassion for Kylo May develop through a deep connection of n the Force (possibly even romantic mirroring Palme and Anakin relationship) and she will never give up perhaps a moment will come when she has to make a decision to leave him for dead or go back for him. Where Obiwan left him Rey will go back for him embracing the connection and compassion for him forming an attachment with Kylo. Especially considering Rey wants belonging and has serious issues with abandonment. What do you guys think Charisma? #reylo

Hi Charlie! Your channel is fantastic, one of my favorite places on KZbin. It's brilliant. I've been applying your techniques and for the most part they work great, except in one category: depressed and/or "mean girls". You know the type of people that are jealous of confident people, very insecure and want to deflate others, or can't stand to have someone else shine, or have been raised not to celebrate other people but to be sarcastic and cynical. There are a lot of these people and I find charismatic techniques don't really work with them. Some of these people are co-wrokers and so I need to get through. So, how do you disarm them and get them to your side? Thanks so much!

Negative by face-value and true by the deeper question. I haven’t spoken to my dad in 16 Years. He practically left all of us at a doorstep and has only just recently came into the lives of my older siblings - asking only for money. I haven’t spoken to him, though. So obviously my dad has nothing to do with my incredible success today. However, if I look at it from a different perception, my dad was suppose to be the man he was so I can become the person I am today.

Great video! Loved it! It is the same in the movie Nocturnal Animals, Amy Adams refuses to accept that she is like her mother and finally does the same mistakes as she did. Keep going with that kind pf philosophical videos it s amazing

Just watched this and luckily I realized this all by myself when my friend told me how much I'm turning into more like my dad and having some of his negative traits(not that it's bad but it's not one of the better traits to have if I were to follow my dreams), but I quickly realized I don't have to be like him despite idolizing him still. One thing I can't figure out though is how to be more like him as I still have a lot to learn from him, while trying to keep myself in check. Anyways, it's an interesting video!

I love this. This whole video is so well done. I love the part how you say Luke realizes his own struggle is not with Darkness outside of him like the emperor but with the darkness inside of him. Those make the best stories. Where the hero has to deal with his inner demons. My favorite archetype in stories is the wise old Mentor archetype period in Star Wars it is Yoda. Or Gandalf or Dumbledore or Rafiki or Master Splinter Master Oogway I could go on. But the wise old Mentor archetype is unique in that they have not only defeated all of their external demons no no, it is true that there is no foe left that is a match for them but there is a reason for this. There's no foe left in the universe that is a match for them because they have mastered or defeated their inner demons as well more importantly. They have faced this idolisation or denial of the father and they have reconciled it among many other things. They have put their flaws under control. My favorite example of all is Master Oogway which is why that is my name on here. C Master Shifu is what I would call a trainer, he is not yet the wise old Mentor archetype. Shifu has defeated all of his external demons. There really isn't a match for Master Shifu physically, but the reason Tai Lung beats him at the end of the first Kung Fu Panda movie is because Shifu viewed Tai Lung as a son and he couldn't bring himself to fight him and it messed him up and throw him off. So Shifu still has inner demons to deal with. This is evident in his constant frustration with po and his impatience and short temper and his worry about the return of Tai Lung. Master Oogway is not worried why? Because he knows that everything will work out okay and he also knows that Tai Lung does no match for him so when push comes to shove if he had to stop him he could. He's only there for the growth of the hero and for no other reason. He has no growth left, the wise old Mentor in general has finished all of their growth and the only reason they're still around is to impart something to the hero and as soon as they do that they decide when they leave, no one has the power to take their life from them. And Luke is having to learn this. Yoda did the same thing, he died of old age when he wanted to.

Please do a video on the downside of the Light force. I was doing my own research of this topic, specifically on masculine identities for my thesis. I came to the conclusion that the fall of Darth Vader had to do with the terrible teachings of the Light, which pushes people to suppress and deny their emotions than accept them and mold them in a positive way. In film, Anakin came to Yoda with his emotional conflicts, seeking help. But Yoda basically told him to forget about his feelings. He considered Anakin's emotions a liability, which they were. However, these attachments also gave Luke the strength to save his father. It's not a coincidence that only Darth Vader could defeat the Emperor - not Yoda, no Obi Wan, and not Luke. They all failed. Why? Because Darth Vader truly represented balance. He embodies both light AND dark. His humanity (and all the flaws that come with it) is a part of him. This balance enables him to make the sacrifice for his son.

_“I’m inclined to think we are all ghosts-every one of us. It’s not just what we inherit from our mothers and fathers that haunts us. Its all kinds of old defunct theories, all sorts of old defunct beliefs, and things like that.”_ -Henrik Ibsen Henrik Ibsen had a term which he called "Ghosts" (or in both Danish & Norwegian, is Gengangere, which can be literally translated as "again walkers", "ones who return", or "revenants") stands for the way specific behavior continues to haunt us. Like ghosts, people don't see them, acknowledge them or they simply choose to ignore them, yet those same "ghosts" still haunt us, regardless of if one tries to deny it's there.

Can you do a follow up video on this about how fathers affect men and women different? This lesson is awesome, and readily applicable for men. Can we give the women some love? I think that would help your viewers (male and female) understand your point better.
