Love your videos, they're educational and useful with minimum time invested to build the project, that's what I like most. If it's too complicated, a lot of audience loose the interest of building it! I had my Shooting board accommodating my Veritas Jack plane but I installed the leading board on a piece of Plywood finished with Poly so the handplane glides easier and no wax needed. I also added a "guard" rail so the plane rides on its side in between without moving away from the piece. I thought I'll share it with you all.

I simply glued scrap woods together, I see no issue with this is extremely simple variation. I don't see how it should get non-square. Only difference tough I don't know if required, but I thought it was a good idea to make the grain of the shooting board (base and fence) go with the planer, so when I hit it's edge on accident, it doesn't chip.

When using a shooting board, can you use a #4 plane or you need to use a low angle jack plane?
@briancarroll6803
@briancarroll6803 Жыл бұрын
This is a two year old question, surely you have the answer, but in the interest of future viewers the answer is yes. You can use any size plane really, but the larger you go the better reference you get to the surface. They make planes that are specifically "shoot board planes" (like the Stanley #51 - they spelled it chute) and a lot of people use a #5 1/2. But Veritas makes a mini board and plant that I presume is for model making. I've even seen small versions made specifically for block planes instead of bench planes. No rules other than make sure you have square intersections.

thanks for the information - recently started using my hand planes more. May be a crazy simple question, but it would seem like the plane would shave your reference board, i.e. the board that your target board is sitting on. How do you avoid this, do you have to make your reference board lower than where the edge of you plane blade comes through the plate. If so, does this require a shooting board be designed based on a specific plane geometry/ Sorry if this is obvious to everyone else, not obvious to me - thought I would ask. It also gives you another comment for your KZbin algo.

.Have not used one before but there are two things I dont get: First, your planer needs to have a very precise 90 degree angle. Is this really the case? My one is timber, but ok, could by an american steel one instead of using brit version. Second, I have not got the measures. What I mean, you dont want to hit your shooting board with the blade in any case, right? So, your MDF needs to be less thick that the distance between the blade and the side of the planer, right? But why is your cherry part flush with the side of the MDF board? Why not recessed by 1 mill or so? You dont want to cut it. But if recessed by 1 mill, you risk splitting the workpiece if planing end grain. So in this case, you plane from both sides half?

On the sole of the plane as u look at the blade coming out of the “mouth” you’ll see that the blade doesn’t go all the way to the very edge. That small section doesn’t cut and therefore always “rides” against the edge of the platform while the blade shaves the edge that the plane rides along (at first, until it bottoms out because of the area riding along the platform (just realized how convoluted this might sound. Watch the video 😄) the edge tha the sole of plane rides against is a small backward “L”. Confusing because it’s so small it’s hard to see in demonstrations. Most people have the same question. His video on it makes everything clear 👍

No way. That's how you guarentee its square and makes it so you can easily replace the fence down the road without having to make a new one

Nice, functional and all of that. Only... it is ‘premier league’. Dado stacks, expensive and almost limited to de good old US of A or machines you will hardly find in a hobbyist shop. Pulling out a ‘piece of cherry’ yeah right, thats my wood budget for half a year. So nice vid, like to have this board but not in my reach. Thanks.

Nico Bogaard You can cut dados many ways. A standard table saw blade, router, chisel etc... Cherry is completely unnecessary but cool. Use poplar or whatever you have lying around.

Please cool it with the background music. It is too loud and quite annoying.
