Fun fact: the term up-state is only regularly used for New York because it is both the city and the state, so there is a need to identify if you are in the north end of the city, or the north end of the state. This is also useful because of how different the city and state are from each other. The term then became a general way to mean that you are not in the major city but rather in a place that is generally north of the city

As someone from the Midwest, I can promise you it is used extensively in Michigan (along with "Up North") and, to lesser extents, Wisconsin and Minnesota. I've heard it used to describe Illinois and Ohio, but with much less frequency, though I don't know as many people from those states so I may be biased.

To clarify: the ENTIRE Midwest uses it in reference to Michigan, to the point where "upstate" is usually implied to mean Michigan even if you're not IN Michigan. This is especially prevalent in Wisconsin. The individual states sometimes use it in reference to themselves, but not as frequently. At least, that's been my experience. I'm sure there are probably places where it's not so common and I'm sure someone is gonna come in here and be like "Uhm, ACTUALLY, in my part of the Midwest, we don't talk about Michigan at ALL!"

@@weezact7 im from the South, in Arkansas, and we generally use "Up North" to refer to anything above the Mason-Dixon Line. You're above that, you're a Northerner. Then it's just a matter of are you Northeastern, Northcentral, or Northwestern

In most places in the US today Upstate just means north of where you are but to my knowledge it comes from New Yorkers referring to anything not part of the city and its surrounding area as Upstate. So, if you are in and around New York, New York you are in the city and if you are not, you are "Upstate". This is further complicated by one of the regions of the state being called "Upstate New York" (Northern Part), so you can have a person from the city tell someone who isn't that they are from "Upstate" and the person not from the city will be like "No I am from Western New York" and the other will be like "Yeah that's what I said Upstate".

I’d definitely recommend to Ben if he wants to play Heresy, to pick up the old HH 1st Ed books and play that. He’d actually have a lot of fun with his DA and the force building is alot more centred around building to the Lore vs the optical build

What really interesting was I remember there being an article somewhere talking about reaction shots in like 2ed 40k, and just how OP they were and how they made it so no one moved. GW just ignores it's own past mistakes. Then again, whaling is lucrative and games like Overwatch show there is going to be a lot of forgiveness if you can make people *need* the item, rather then just a hobby you could walk away from.

Quick guide to directions in US English: Up = north; like on a map Down = south; ditto Out = west; cause us white folk started on the east coast and spread out from there Back = east; cause that's the direction we spread from "Upstate" is pretty much a New York term because NYC has the same name as the state and is on the SE corner. So, if you go anywhere else in NY, people say "upstate." And yeah, "crik" seems to have started in Appalachia & spread to the Ozarks. Both places have a lot of folks of Irish decent. The traditional music pretty much requires a fiddle

It's quick but ben suggests SAGA Age of Magic as an alternative game system to use your fantasy models with. If you are scrolling through the comments and have fantasy models it might be worth checking out. If you have played with the system please share your experience below. The core rulebook is sold out but ill look into it.

The biggest issue I always had with terrain was that it's very much a box of a spot and it always felt so small. My friends and I would instead use string and other colored mats on top of the table, so like green mat with a jungle print, jungle and a large area now. It really mattered for me, a Catachan player that we did that, but it flowed into our normal games because it made the cover rules more important and made the maps feel like real areas. Rarely did we have just napoleon type of fights like I see today of two sides line up walk forward, shoot, charge, repeat.

Thing is, if you play a lot of the napoleonic based wargames too, while their is a lot of walk in lines towards one another… terrain plays a key factor too. From fence lines, to fields, to hills, to open fields where cavalry and infantry can manoeuvre easily towards their needed goal. In many ways even black powder, medieval and ancient battles require lots of moving and planning on a large scale. Yes the combat is a bit more static once engaged, but that’s cause you can’t go giving ground or watching your lines break. It’s also a game of knowing when to push forward, how long to lay in the volleys, and when to deliver the steel spike.

I personally love the modern takes that you see on napoleonic-adjacent rules. Turnip 28 in particular has great takes on charges, tracking the use of black powder, smoke and panic amongst your troops while the bookkeeping is kept at a minimum

I don't get why everyone pisses themselves over daylight savings time. If we didn't "Spring forward" and "Fall back" you would literally be going to work at 8am in the dark and the other half of the year the sun would rise at 4am. It's an attempt to move it more towards "sun rises around 6 or 7 in the morning all year." It's not perfect but it would be a lot worse without it. And honestly, if you're so sensitive that a 1 hour change twice a year incapacitates you from jet lag, (1) never travel, and (2) you have bigger physiological problems than DST, consult a physician.

The sad thing with the squats is now some of their weapons just wont ever work because they only go off on 6's but you're going to get to a point where you never even get to make that roll so that weapon is basically worthless. Also an entire subfactions trait now also wont ever activate because... it goes off on the 6 on a die they'll never get to roll. Otherwise thank fuckin christ.
