A new study overseen by Dr. Liberato de Caro of Italy’s Institute of Crystallography of the National Research Council, in Bari has concluded that the Shroud of Turin dates to the first century. In a report published on the website of Italy’s Department of Chemical Sciences and Materials Technologies, de Caro outlined the “Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering” or WAXS method they used, which measures the structural degradation due to natural aging of the cellulose that makes up the fibers of the linen threads. This process, which is non-destructive, was used on a variety of historical textiles which have well-documented ages, and then compared to the Shroud of Turin; the best match was with a piece of fabric from ca. AD 55-74 known to have come from the siege of Masada in Israel. The new dating contradicts the 1988 carbon-14 test of fabric threads from the shroud, which dated the relic to the Middle Ages. Critics have long pointed out that that test was flawed, as it came from an area of the fabric that was repaired in the Middle Ages. The new study also notes that ancient textiles can become contaminated with substances over time that could distort carbon-14 results. The new findings show that the fabric of the Shroud of Turin originated at the time of Christ.

yes the problem is that that dating is now highly doubtful. The reason being is that the testing was supposed to be from 3 different locations on the shroud to be reliable but instead they took it from the same spot. To make things worse, the test also revealed materials that suggested that it was a patch from fire damage. Apparently this was known at the time but it was decided not to reveal those details which have now come out. And a recent paper came out that suggested that it can be dated almost exactly to the time of Jesus. This is why there is a big resurgence in hope that it's actually legit.

It was called a forgery by the bishop back when it was first put on display, so as an apostolic shepherd of the church, he made that is the official position. Even so, this doesn’t prevent people from worshipping it if indeed you believe it’s real. Your faith piety isn’t attached to it being real. The point is you are worshipping Jesus while praying to a votive item. Pope John Paul II even unofficially approved of it. However, no Catholic is obligated to believe that’s really Jesus’ blood making those stains. I can call it fake all day long and not go to hell for it. But if it is really the Lord, then his head was out of proportion to his body.

The bishop, being the gullible old fool that he was, took him at his word. Of course, they did not have the testing back then they do now, or they quickly would have discovered that there is not so much as a drop of paint, or any other manmade material on the image on the Shroud. The fact is that there are no pigments, paints, dyes or stains have been found on the fibrils. There are no chemical or physical methods known which can account for the totality of the image, nor can any combination of physical, chemical, biological or medical circumstances explain the image adequately. And _everyone_ that has spent any time at all studying the Shroud knows this. Only the super dumb and the mentally ill (such as atheists) these days will all it fake. Pay them no mind.

To identify the Shroud is a fake is far closer to reality than the long chain of dubious stories and claimed experiments that sell books. Even the Church hasn’t said the Shroud is real. You want the Shroud to do something for you Christianity itself preaches is a vanity, proof rather than faith. If you need proof Jesus rose from the dead, then you don’t have faith in the Gospels.
