"Every species that winks out of existence takes its miracles and its secrets with it." That is deep!

Oh God, that hit me so hard, the awful, awful loneliness and desperation of that poor creature, any creature, the last of it's species, that sound, that cry into the void, could, the way things are going, be yours or mine. At 67, I seldom cry. I cried over this. A wonderful talk. Bless you.

What a beautiful but gut-wrenchingly sad illustration of extinction. The silence of extinction. I'm without hope that enough humans care, or enough humans have the intelligence to even understand what our scientists are reporting (and have been reporting for decades)...

It's in our nature to only realise what we're missing when it's gone. I believe this fact will eventually become humanities downfall in the next 100 years.
@bevan55605 жыл бұрын
not entirely. we are capable of recognizing problems before they even happen, the only real challenge is influencing the general public + those in power to value and act upon it.

@@bevan5560 And that is exactly what won't happen. People are selfdestructive.

Proud Dutchman not with that attitude. We are capable of changing literally anything, ESPECIALLY about ourselves. As generations pass we become more open minded and connected, just takes the right leaders appealing to those willing to listen (children especially) to completely change the way people think.
@jimsherwood96395 жыл бұрын
Some people claim it is laughable we have 100 years left. It is just one more tool to pacify the population. The rulers of humanity have already driven this planet off the edge of the cliff. Humanity is waking up half way down and reaching for the brakes.
@jeanharlow57315 жыл бұрын
@@bevan5560 Yes, we are capable, but we haven't responded quickly enough to this gigantic problem. The most intelligent of us HAVE been warning our world leaders for the last 3 decades what will happen if we don't change, and although millions of people around the world have listened and urged our leaders to act immediately, our leaders have abrogated their number one responsibility (to act in their people's best interest) by ignoring the warnings, and now it looks like it's too late...

We have to make the economic system "nature-inclusive", otherwise all good intentions (including this great speech), will not work out well. We are almost 8 billion people, and growing to 10 billion people this century. All these people get their comforts (food, energy, shelter, etc..) from the economic system that only takes from nature, but not giving back. Even those that act upon this (a minority) are still depending on this destructive system that we created. A huge transformation is required, but it will not be without huge consequences to modern life. Will it happen fast enough to minimise the damage? I think you know the answer.

No, sadly it does not prevent destruction. It is more sustainable than an omnivorous diet but it is not a panacea. We need larger, more systematic solutions.

what's the point of this talk though? she doesn't provide anything actionable, so at best someone will donate some money to some animal conservation charity and that's it. 1. people will find excuses in telling themselves that extinctions are just something natural. she missed to explain the rate of extinctions that is currently occurring is anything but natural and very much caused by man 2. she missed to explain what the leading cause of species extinction is: mass animal agriculture and the mono-cultures linked to it 3. she missed to explain the most efficient and actionable thing we can do about it as consumers: not generating demand for animal products
