Very good idea a whole talk about the El Argar culture! It's so fascinating the shape of the diadem still exists today, when little girls play princes or at carnival...

been thinking about the sea peoples, and about the bronze age, what was life doing around the bronze age in other places, there may have been a culture that lived in boats and traveled all around sorta like nomads or bronze age mail men, cool vid

What I find very interesting is that La Almoloya definitely is a hilltop fortified settlement. As building a palace complex on a hilltop massively increases the cost of building and maintaining it I'm wondering about the enemies that made it necessary to spend this much "money".

Even today, women in general tend to use more decoration like jewelry and make-up, it doesn't necessarily confer higher status, although it might. Additionally, a man's decoration might consist of symbols of authority that were passed on to his heir or replacement. Alternatively, perhaps hers were not passed on due to the early death of the child.
@LQOTW3 жыл бұрын
Perhaps, M.r Robey, but, given that they were buried beneath the floor of a bldg of important status, I would hazard a guess that they were indeed people of some importance.

Going by the location of this hill fort in particular and el Argar culture in general, could it be said that they were a proto-Iberian culture? Doesn't seem like it's a proto-Celtic/Bell Beaker culture which would have been farther north and west within the Iberian peninsula...?

El Argar seems about the right era from when the legendary civilization of Atlantis was around. No doubt any history or legends that filtered down to the Greek historian must have been embellished with a thousand tellings of the tales. Perhaps there are some details that fit with the Atlantis story as told by the Greeks. That could make an awesome novel. For comparison, consider the difference between the Iliad and historical evidence of sacking of Troy. One could expect a morphing of the Atlantis/El Argar tale at a comparable rate. For a confirmation of the measured rate of morphing, consider what Herodotus wrote about ancient Egypt versus what we know about ancient Egypt

Why is it, as with so many things, the more you know the less you know at the same time....ove subjects that always answer 1 question only to create 8 more... Talking of questions - So they must have put the one tapered cylinder ear ring in her ear first and then she must have sat there while they looped the silver multi ringed hoop through that cylinder? Just wow, the 1 that's looped through the other is almost perfectly circular and must have took ages to do by someone very skilled. Question - Would they have needed the metal hot? If so how would they do that while she had them on? Unless they were just for her to wear after death and weren't fitted until she was dead, even then they surly wouldn't want to burn the body or hair if/as ancestors were so important to them.
@alisonauchterlonie82123 жыл бұрын
The metal would not need to be hot. Annealed silver and gold remain soft after cooling and are work hardened.
@itarry43 жыл бұрын
@@alisonauchterlonie8212 yhea I thought it might be I wasn't sure it was workable enough to get such good curves all the way around the circles.
@johnclapperton82113 жыл бұрын
Maybe the silver coil was made separately around a circular former, and then threaded through like a key ring.
@itarry43 жыл бұрын
@@johnclapperton8211 maybe. I guess they'd probably do that then sort out the damage from fitting it after. Makes sense I guess. Still love to know if it was a death thing or if she had them on when alive. I'm really not surprised by the female being more powerful or respected or even just expected to wear more finery as many many old cultures has religions based around the female deity and their life giving abilities. It's a modern religion thing to "put the women in her place" etc. Which unfortunately usually reflects the culture that religion is formed in by and large.

It could also signify royal or marital status, down for Princess, up for Queen or vice versa, down for married, up for single. There's so much that gets lost to time, some questions will never be answered.

Absolutely gobsmacked to read so many comments trying to bring down the theory that the woman was of 'higher status'. While, like everything in history we can only use best judgement given the available information.... There's a very clear sexiest undertone to the guys commenting on this section 👊

I think it's fairly obvious that modern ideas of gender and patriarchy are a product of agriculture and land-holding; the need to secure heritors necessitates control of feminine labour, location and reproductive options by men. Look at the range of gender relationships in non-ag, peri-modern tribal societies; they run the gamut. We need to toss out preconceptions born in modern assumptions when thinking about prehistoric cultures.
@MrGerryodonothing3 жыл бұрын
Excellent report. Not surprising that a female may have had a higher or indeed equal status to a male back then or visa versa. The laws of the breitheamh were rigorous and placed both at the same level with regards to their sovereignty and it would depend on intellect for either to be elected to a position of authority.
@donnyskinglongliveme3 жыл бұрын
Maybe the man died and was buried with a portion of the family treasure, and the rest was passed on to his daughter, and then when she died later, the family jewels were buried with her. It's not got me convinced that it was a higher status woman. Thats only 1 of many many explainations.
@MarkVrem3 жыл бұрын
Also, the man might have been robbed somewhere after he got buried and before she got buried. I didn't hear anything about the other burials showing a similar pattern or not. Or how many might have been robbed while others not..
