genuinely insane how sims 2 is better than sims 4, even 20 years into the future
@DoveJS
@DoveJS 8 ай бұрын
It's honestly not that insane when you think about it though. Unfortunately, the push for graphics and 3D realism is kind of to blame. Everyone was so desperate to make things look better which is understandable, early 3D could be rough (and even later on in the advances of 3D graphics, you'll for example see one of the major criticisms for Sims 3 is how the Sims themselves look lol) but then people kept applauding how realistic a game could become and a lot of players sincerely focus on that. Video game companies have harsh deadlines and something had to suffer for the sake of this, which ended up being the game play in a lot of cases. This is why when it comes to indie games with simpler graphics, they usually have more time to focus on in-depth mechanics, activities, worlds, and NPCs for the player to engage with. They still spend plenty of time on how it looks, pixel graphics for example are reasonably time consuming even if they're small and are a unique art form unto themselves, but they didn't need to spend hours upon hours rendering every pore in someone's skin (which is an exaggeration lol.) Animation also takes a lot of time too, especially if you need multiple even with slight differences, which is why these days most cut scenes just slot in your avatar/MC with whatever they have as needed and they're more like mini-movies. (This isn't a criticism just an observation.) You, kind stranger, might be looking at me right now like I'm insane and saying, "BUT THE SIMS 4 HAS CLAY HAIR!" Yes, it does. The Sims 4 was going to be closer to an MMO (or maybe whatever Project Renesme is now) and EA got scared when SimCities tanked so Maxis did a complete 180 on Sims 4. So, on top of video game companies focusing more on visuals over game play (and individual unique animations for everything takes more time) the Sims 4 had a rough recovery trying to switch genre of video game. But this is why the Multi-Player Mod exists: the game was meant to be multi-player once upon a time, that mod activates the ancient code. And so, the Sims 4 still ended up suffering from both ends of this issue; threadbare base code that had to be dragged out of a completely different UI and player experience needs coupled with not awful graphics but very aesthetically distinct and simplified (they've made them more complex over time though; just compare any OG hairs with newer free releases or any of the recent packs, same for clothing and items.) You'll also notice most newer Expansion Packs focus more on the CAS, Worlds, and Build/Buy over game play and the animations are often limited. Honestly, the fact that the aesthetic was so simple from the outset is probably why Project Olympus wasn't simply scrapped entirely. They had more time to do an about face and rush to try and fill the gaps with what they already had and could reuse. Sims 2 was focused more on game play and ease of understanding from the start, they didn't have to struggle to shift goals part way, the devs knew the animations would sell you on the realism in spite of the semi-cartoony style (because good animation can sell you on 2D art which is flatter than flat) and they relied on their underlying code and the stories to guide the player along for a unique experience. I also think the Sims 2 packs had more time spent on them, plausibly by bigger developer teams, and there are way less packs in general, with only Expansions and Stuff Packs. The graphics weren't the focus but they were just good enough which is why it holds up and if they could somehow remaster it further it'd simply become truly amazing. But that said, it's also very different game play in some respects, Sims 2 is easier than Sims 1 but still harder edit: than Sims 3 and Sims 4. And Sims 4 is all about chilling and doing whatever you want when you want. Sims 2 is about struggling to achieve your dreams. I think what people want now a days would actually be something in the middle because these days a lot of people don't have the time or energy IRL to plead with other Sims to be their friends just so they can get a desperately needed promotion lol.

other than when it comes to graphics it’s like a million times better i love the lore it has and freedom i wish they kept the open map like in sims 3 that rocked. the only good thing in sims 4 is building and create a sim. they also make so many expansion packs some that should definitely come in the main game like pets and weather, but fr it’s so much money worth of expansion packs like wtf.

The Sims 5 should have been a Sims 2 Remake, with Sims 3 open world and Create-a-style, and Sims 4 Art style with extra resolution to meshes and textures. I agree. As far as simulation games go the sims franchise is obviously the best and the sims 2 did a lot of stuff right and now it is just a bummer that some game mechanics don’t exist in the newer games. I think I want to see the sims team do a major poll and ask what peoples favorite aspects are out of all the sims games to make an even better version of the sims!

I genuinely prefer a lot of the updated Graphics/CAS/Build/Multitasking features from TS4, but social interactions and what made the Sims more multi-faceted like memories, relationships, life time v short term, lore, private schools, and base interests and wants/needs in TS2 has never been matched. I used to be waaaaaaaaay more game play oriented back when it was more detailed and invested.
@Ardelin_
@Ardelin_ 7 ай бұрын
What do you like about the interests?
@owens_shmoens
@owens_shmoens 7 ай бұрын
@Ardelin_ preferences and interests add to the game play. It makes it where you sim will have a much harder time, either like a Sim themselves or being liked by them. Sometimes, it won't work at all. TS4 patched in orientation, but it didn't seem to really change all that much at the end of the day. TS4 is very 1 dimintional and doesn't really have nuance or complexity. It makes game play, frankly, boring. They've made the game so easy that it's almost like it doesn't matter if you're there or not for a lot of the actual game play; you'll succeed either way in a lot of cases.

@@AniaSikorska There is actually a need - let me explain. The original Sims 2 game is now widely considered "abandonware" because there are no official updates or support provided by EA for it anymore. As our computer hardware gets newer, trying to play old games like this gets more and more difficult. If it wasn't for such a dedicated community still creating fixes, patches, and mods, the game could quickly become unplayable for many. Yesterday, I decided to migrate my Sims 2 collection and backed up game files to our new PC. It took me a total of about 5 hours of downloading, patching, restoring, test playing, and then finding and applying fixes for bugs in order to get the game stable and fully up and running in its original glory. As time goes on, this process will likely only get more difficult... (It holds up beautifully, by the way, and once all patched up, the graphics and animations run at the higher resolution so smoothly. So gorgeous. 😍) A remastered version of the Sims 2 that's optimized to run on modern hardware would be a godsend, and there are thousands of OG Simmers who would pay to have it (myself included).

15:00 That's not exactly correct. What happened is that the developers got Brandi pregnant (probably the usual way) and then Skip died. At some point, they deleted Skip's tomb and he became *UNLINKED* and unlinked Sims cannot pass their DNA to their offspring (unlinked Sim generally have incomplete character data). So the kid will always be a male clone of Brandi because Skip can't give him or her his DNA. If you fix Skip's data and set him as "linked", then he'll be able to pass his DNA and the kid can be a male or a female.

That being said Id be behind that 100% we need to stop thinking of sims as not a real game and accept that we need gaming rigs if we want to game because the compromise is too much, weve just ended up with a shallow game that still has bugs and performance issues on lower specs

Small touch but thank you for putting captions on your video! I have a hard time understanding videos a lot of the time and captions really help me and people like me to understand and enjoy your content. I wish more KZbinrs (who do scripted/edited content like this) put accurate captions on their videos

I miss playing Sims 2. All the details you showed brought back fond memories. Also, I remembered you could choose the zodiac sign for your sim. These little but important things could have been inserted in the Sims 4, too..

i remember playing the sims 2 when it came out as a small kid right up until the sims 3 came out, and then the sims 4 maybe 5 years ago. 2 years ago i went back to the sims 2 and it is genuinely my favourite of the sims games. i still play sims 4 from time to time when expansions or fun mods come out, but always for only a couple of days and then i go back to sims 2. i'm 5 generations into my pleasantview and it is so much fun

this is the content i subscribed for all these years back. your sima 2 videos, gameplay lore and all. i already knew about it all but to hear you talking about it so passionately makes me happy. your sims 4 content doesn't do that to you. its see through. i respect that this is your job. however even you say it in this very video, no other sims game did it like 2

Omg! This is a bit morbid but watching Cassandra getting spooked to death just reminded me of how much I LOVE that the ghosts in the sims 2 can actually kill your sim lol it kinda gives them a purpose in a way? I can't stand ghosts in the sims 4 bc all they do is break things and make white cake 😭 but the ghosts in the sims 2 are so much more real and scary! They really thought of everything didn't they?

Now this here is the content I needed in life. The SIMS 2 is still my favorite in the series. I have so many fond memories. So many wonderful households. So many gall durn stories woven. And as to the point of laptopping it, I also had it installed on my laptop. Ideal with a mouse, but fully playable with the touch pad. Thank you for this trip down memory land.🤙🏽🤙🏽

To think that personal computer systems were much more limited back in 2004 than they are today and yet they had enough capability to run such a detailed and well thought out game that packs so so much in it.

I recently learnt on TikTok that you can serve coffee with the espresso machine and you get extra points from the headmaster! And extra points if you go in the hot tub as he will join you. (But then if you haven’t reached the points I find it hard to get him out) 😂

The things I miss the most about previous games: The garden actually grew weeds, you had to trim the hedges, you had to make the beds. You would get flies if you didn't do the dishes for a long time (and actually die from that). And personality traits had an impact on who you got along with. Seems like silly things to miss, but it made such a difference to me.

I miss the Sims 2 memories so much. In my current Sims 4 save, I’ve been jumping between families and when I went back to one sim that i had played from infant - young adult ALL HER MILESTONES WERE GONE. I’d only played another family for maybe 2 sims weeks and it just deleted everything. All her relationships were gone too - including a boyfriend that she had from being a teen (he was completely erased lol).

Its always so interesting to hear you talk about older Sims games. I played them all, but had no idea you could do half the things you talk about. 😂 I like all of the added details in the Sims 2 UI that you can see, but I personally find it a bit overwhelming to look at. It'd be nice if Sims 5 adds the option to choose between 2 different UI's you can use (more stuff on one screen vs hidden in menus). But I understand that's not likely to happen.😅

I learned quickly that you should always have the food ready before the Headmaster of the School gets there but Sims 2 players have probably all struggled like that trying to finish cooking before he said no! Sims 2 is the kind of game that you can just keep playing endlessly. The genetics, the family trees, the relationships, the gameplay, the details... I love the sims four's graphics and build mode (one of the reasons I cannot play the sims 3 or 2 is the build mode, why is it so hard to build in that game???) but I miss the storytelling. I WISH the townie families knew people or had sentiments with other people, cottage living kind of did that and is the closest we have to storytelling because stuff is actually premade, but I wish the Landgraab's had a relationship with Johnny Zest, or say if Bob had a negative relationship with Eliza yk? It just doesn't have story and we are expected to do the story ourselves, they could have *at least* gave us a bit of storytelling with sentiments already in place and relationships, like why can't Don Lothario be best friends with Eric Lewis already in a new save?

I've been recently playing the sims 2 again and I'm genuinely in love with it. I used to play it as a teenager when it came out and I remember loving it as well, but I didn't realise it was this good. The little details that they introduced there are so impressive comparing to what we have in the sims 4. I honestly have more fun playing the sims 2 in 2023 than playing the sims 4.

I never knew that about the relationship bars in the Sims 2. They should definitely bring that back to the Sims 4 because something I just want to start a little fight for storytelling sake but I don’t want it to make them enemies just by one interaction
