I have always maintained that between Star Wars and 40k, the latter may be grimdark™, but at least they seem to have the decency to acknowledge that it's bad when bad stuff happens. Case in point: Inquisitors tend to be fairly solemn when they pronounce Exterminatus on planets, and do not do so lightly. In SW, Leia be like "well, I lost my planet, my friends and family and everyone I cared about, but I met two cuties and had a ton of fun, so that's a win in my book". And she's the good side.
@Snagabott4 жыл бұрын
@@englishlady9797 100% Agreed. It's quite baffling to me that Lucas insists that SW is a kids show, when it so clearly isn't or, at least, doesn't have to be. As evidence for this, he could not only look to the multitude of diehard fans (of SW or MCU or other fantasy ip's) who are old enough to be grandfathers by now, but also the fact that fantastical folklore was originally tales made by adults for adults*. If that stuff used to appeal to adults, so can his space wizards. I actually think his rep as a "mediocre writer" is undeserved to an extent, in the sense that the core of the story in the prequels is imho a really, really fascinating one... the only problem, as you say, was that it fell apart whenever he tried to mesh slapstick humor for children (looking at you, Jar Jar) into a deep tragedy about evil schemes, Machiavellian politics and how love and good intentions can be manipulated to serve the dark side. *The only reason some people think of wizards and trolls and dragons as belonging strictly to "children's stories" today is because the guys writing the stuff down in the 1800's edited very heavily to tend to the sensibilities of the time: violence was heavily toned down, all the erotica was purged (and either published separately or buried entirely), and the language was heavily bowdlerized.

Personally, before watching I'd say there are 3 main reasons why. 1. Unlike the Jedi, the separatists had a relatively unlimited number of droids to throw at thier problem. The Jedi on the other hand had no reinforcements until the arrival of the clone army, leading to them being quickly outnumbered and surrounded. 2. Given that droids don't contain the force in them like organic races do, it was likely harder for the jedi to sense any hidden threats, having to determine thier location by "tracking" the blaster bolts thier precognition alerts them to. 3. Unlike the Jedi of the Old Republic, the forces sent to the arena likely had little to no experience with large scale combat due to the previous millennia of relative peace. This inexperience was likely made worse by my first and second point, leading to the massive losses at the arena.

@ThePalaeontologist4 жыл бұрын
It was as far as I'm aware. He outright says, rather stridently showing the arrogance of the Jedi, that, "I will take what Jedi we have left to Geonosis", after Yoda says he'll go to Kamino to see the Clones for himself. By, "what Jedi we have left", I guess he means ready to go at short notice (though it could be seen as lazily contextually ambiguous, typical of some of the dubious writing choices Lucas was responsible for) and not either too busy on other missions, or too old/young to go. Obviously when he was written to say that, stood in the Senate Building, with Yoda, watching proceedings in what seemed to be a random viewing platform or maybe even one for them, it was probably just done to sound cool or something. Mace just seemed to be following standard Jedi policy, albeit this time taking a particularly big strike team of 212 Jedi. In fairness, from a Jedi Order perspective, it was a huge deployment for a single rescue mission. What could possibly go wrong? -_-

@@averagefriend6291 I said it was about the matter of short notice and likely due to the way most of the ~10,000 or so Jedi were busy or unsuitable. Realistically though, and something too few seem to realise, George Lucas was salty as fuck about Ridley Scott's Gladiator (2000) and it's critically acclaimed success. He saw it while Episode II was being made and wanted a giant arena spectacular for his own movie. It's not a coincidence. Just like Lucas was 'inspired' (and not at all jealous, _nooo_ perish the thought old boy!) by the Olympian success of James Cameron's TITANIC in 1998. It rankled and annoyed Lucas, as it seemed to steal his own hype and thunder for the prequel trilogy he was embarking on, in the build up to Episode I TPM 1999. "You might not have noticed that, but your brain did" - Harry S Plinkett. It was cynical one-upmanship. For Lucas's ego circa 2000 to 2002, the Jedi now become the scapegoats and -fire retardant- morons Leeroy Jenkins'ing themselves into the most obvious trap since (nevermind, I won't tell that joke, I may have gone too far in a few places, to quote my favourite flannel shirt wearing writing genius) P.S - you're right. By all rights no Jedi would have left Geonosis alive. Thicc plot armour. On the plus side, Natalie Portman never looked better. In the case of Windu, no, not arrogance; that’s Yoda’s trick. With windu the flaw was defeatism. He could not recover, spiritually, from his demotion from balance-bringer. Once the Skywalker line was discovered, he collapsed in on himself and became impotent.
@ThePalaeontologist4 жыл бұрын
Dooku outright predicted (from experience as a former Jedi Master, often part of strike teams) that the Jedi would bravely yet complacently Leeroy Jenkins themselves into an easily prepared ambush. Even just within the Petranaki Arena complex, 10,000 Battle Droids and hundreds of Geonosian warriors were waiting. Then there were what, like 3.7 million droids outside around the planet, mainly in that area? Dooku outsmarted the Jedi Order but it wasn't exactly that difficult. P.S - I'd definitely watch Count Dooku doing a podcast. Also, George Lucas saw Ridley Scott's Gladiator (and it's success) in 2000, while making Attack Of The Clones, so he was jealous and wanted an arena battle too. True story.

During the first battle of Geonosis almost everything what could go wrong went wrong: - If the Jedi used the terrain to their advantage, like retreating to the small corridors, luring the geonosians and droids into narrow passes they would have to deal with much less blaster fire. 2-4 Jedi could deflect blaster bolts, while another, who is protected by the 2-4 other Jedi, uses telekinesis creating mobile shields out of the battle drois or throws them back into the enemy ranks like devastating projectiles. - Fighting on open ground, against an enemie force which outnumbers your own troops more then ten times is a guaranteed death sentence. Especially if your troops are sorrounded. - If Mace Windu, Ki Adi Mundi, Plo Koon and Shaak Ti decided to team up, engaging Dooku in a lightsaber duel the war would be over in minutes. Not even Dooku could defeat this amount of duelists. During the battle outside the arena the list goes on: - Instead of bombing the sh... out of the droid army, which outnumbers the clone troops to an ridicolous amount, the Jedi decided to do Leeroy Jenkins and charged the enemie head on. That`s foolish, stupid and borderlines insanity. - If Yoda decided not to follow Obi Wan and Anakin and saving them from Dooku both of them would be dead. Someone as wise as Yoda should have know that capturing Dooku would be the key to everything and that only he and Windu are a threat to him. So why wasn´t he following his former padawan?

English Lady well you have to look at the setting to see the reason for this, Star Wars is a massively stagnant setting, the tech, the politics it’s all almost all the same stuff with just new names on old things, the jedi leading the army of the republic is just a no brainier I mean just look how they did in the times of the old republic look at how well Revan lead the army’s back then so of course the modern day Jedi will be just as good...... right? But the difference is that revan wasn’t really a Jedi that’s what aloud him to go off and fight, in the times of the clone wars the closest we have to a revan was Anakin but he was no where near as trained as revan was, Anakin was a good leader but not a good General while revan was both to the point that just knowing you where facing him was enough to win a fight, and that’s why the republic turned to the Jedi because they always have.

Good breakdown, well thought out, BUT: The real reason the Jedi lost is the same reason Palpatine / The Sith were successful overall. The Jedi, and in particular the Jedi Council, and even more specifically Yoda, were grossly overconfident, grossly secure in their perceived superiority, and paralyzingly apathetic. They believed the Light Side to be infallible, their foresight to be penultimate. They simply couldn’t conceive of a scenario in which they failed to predict the outcome, indeed where they failed at all. The Light Side itself had become complacent, idle, and frankly, corrupt. Meanwhile, the Dark Side had become more treacherous, insightful, and covertly active in infiltrating all aspects of the Galactic power structure. All things were proceeding according to Papatine’s design, and the Jedi were oblivious. The only hope that the old Jedi Order had lay in Mace Windu. Unfortunately, he accepted (albeit grudgingly) his effective side-lining after the discovery of the Skywalker line, and it’s revelation as balance-bringer. If Windu’s pride had survived that demotion, if he’d instead remained vigilant, suspicious, and active, rather than resigning himself to his impotent council seat, then perhaps the Order may have stood a chance.
