A correctly sized cooling system should be able to provide considerably more cooling than the engine requires under normal conditions, if not, it will overheat under extreme conditions, like prolonged acceleration. As such, a thermostat is a requirement or the engine will run cold under all but the most extreme conditions, even in Oz.

Some engines over heat without the termostat Depends what sort of system they run Sometimes no thermostat the coolant has no way to stop it from circulating though the engine and bypass the rad Removing it is usulay the last resort to try and hind other over heating issues

Antolio Parker-James Supreme I heard but a arbitrary diameter restriction and a thermostat aren't really going to perform the same. A somewhat restricted flow will still allow the engine to run cooler or warmer than ideal and more importantly allow much greater temp fluctuation than a thermostat will.

When these elastic straps with a hook on each end were first made back in the 60s there were four of them hitched to a small steel ring. It made an octopus strap to hold your tarp on your box trailer. But you could unhitch each strap off the ring, and use singly, but the name remained - occy strap. The arrangement of four on a ring faded in preference of using singly, but the name lasted.

Good comment about the FJ exhaust manifolds getting warped over time. They also leak after 30 - 40,000 miles due to "thrown" manifold bolts which causes even more warp-age as they lose tension. Attempt to fix the leak with new gaskets (of course let the exhaust manifold cool down overnight) and it may crack 25,000 miles later. Toyota probably should have used a 2-pc manifold like on the Barra NA engine.

Awesome viewing. Pleasure watching you piece the impossible together. Another plus for m/s exhaust you didn’t mention is; it’s very light compared with even 1.5mm wall s/s tube. Woody wear a dust mask when cutting aluminium dude, that shit nasty.
@Ke3per88
@Ke3per88 6 жыл бұрын
Al, you got me thinking. Does aluminium not expand more than most metals when heated? Why do they use iron blocks, ally heads, and iron manifolds if the head expands at a different rate than the rest of the engine? Sounds like worst case scenario for head gaskets? I know its a ton lighter and the heat transfer is much better, but would a fully cast iron block/head/manifold not be more reliable in the super-long run due to the internal stress being equal? I'm probably having a "doh" moment here and not noticing something, its 6am been awake 30mins. Cheers, love the Skid Factory.

Great episode guys! Nice to see things getting fabricated. As an ex-aircraft techo who is now in training, I really like seeing Al passing on his skills and experience to Woody. Doing things properly, planning ahead, not taking short cuts - these things are hard to train in a classroom environment, it's only really years of focused mentoring on the tools that produces a really good tradie. Keep up the good work gents!

Pretty curious. Turbo yoda has a fulltime job in his workshop right? I wonder how he finds the time to make these videos. Seems like a lot of work to juggle around.

Love your work guys and absolutely love watching your show. I would like to see a workshop walk around or abit of tool talk as this is what your hand are in cars and just about everything also brands would be great, I use tengtools because that’s what leaned with and never had major issues and lifetime warranty made it a easy choice

I have a question, when custom designing a build for far away, do you ever give the owner a draw up of the build so that the owner can give it to more local mechanics for servicing and basic work?

al ive got a 04 tdi jetta, i want more turbo noises nothing else. so waste gate, but it has an egr into an anti shudder valve and that has something to do with the vacuum pump so i cant just throw a egr delete plus a waste gate instead or like my power steering wont work or something. ever worked on VWs? dunno how common they are in australia but i know you loves a good diesel so i figured i might as well add a comment, cheers

I love this series and so awesome to see the editor putting in work! I have always been skeptical about running without a thermostat, I recently had a car that came without one and would never heat up. I have also had the opposite happen where I took one out and the car stated to overheat without it but it would only be on extended driving trips or long hills. Is it just hit or miss when pulling the thermostat?
