I think your mood may have something to do with the time in your life, you are currently at now. You'll be doing your PHD and then going to work full time. You'll have your own place, which may or may not be near your parents. You're realizing that this is one of the last Christmases where you live with your parents and experience the whole season with them. It's okay for time to change, as it will bring exciting new challenges and joys. You're going to do exceptional at your PHD, as you always do in your work. It's been a joy to see you grow up (yes, i'm old) and it's been like seeing myself years ago. I've rediscovered my love of literature as a result. If I had ever had children, I hope they would have ended up as studious. I hope your family has a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New year!

As we age (and I am very, very ancient) that magic inevitably evaporates as we focus on the v. much overrated notion of being an adult. I feel like any kind of “what I got as gifts” video is really strange; gifts (can) hold so much meaning and having a video about it breaks into a really special almost sacred moment between the person giving the gift and the recipient. I do not understand why anyone would want to see that, to me it’s incredibly voyueristic and invasive, as well as being childish since in my experience adults generally do not compare gift piles (often adults don’t have gift piles, but that’s a different conversation)

If you allow me to give you some advice Ruby, look at your parents, look at your grandparents, they are the ones who enjoy Christmas the most because they have already lived long lives, they know that there is nothing to fear. Is the young people who live worried about the future and we do not allow ourselves to fully live and enjoy our present. Christmas is the realization, that everything will be ok. As a 37 yo I think is so weird to think of parents and even grandparents as “the ones who lived long lives”. How old is Ruby’s mom? Sorry, but I can’t see someone under 90 as being old nowadays. 🧐 And it’s sooo weird to be considered old by so many people. Sometimes I think there’s something wrong with me, because I don’t feel old and I don’t think I look old. Maybe I should’ve asked for a mirror as a gift this Christmas.

I started November 1 this year. Instead of rushing and trying to do all of the things I decided to take it slow this year. I stopped and meandered where I could and lollygagged the rest of the way. This has been one of my favorite Holiday seasons ever. My favorite part of "A Christmas Carol" will always be the part where Dickens is talking about Marley's Death and then goes on this insane rant out of nowhere about Common Phrases and then transitions back into the story like nothing ever happened. When I became an adult, however, I needed to let go of some traditions and introduce some new ones... My mum passed away a couple of years ago, and while she was not a Christmas person, she had a collection of ornaments that she acquired over the years. I don’t celebrate Christmas at all now, but the box of ornaments is among the few things of hers I kept.

I think we all go through a slightly ‘magically dulled’ feeling in our early twenties regarding Christmas. When I had my Children that magic was reborn and now they are nearer your age I am finding that same feeling. Yearning now for my kids little eager faces and I guess next will be grandchildren. I love a more natural pagan Xmas with my doggies and nature but trying to slow down after working so hard is difficult. These are all natural transitions and you’ll get your spirit back :)

I am so hoping for your “What I got for Christmas” video & I hope you’d make it a yearly tradition. Yes, time spent together with family and friends is above everything else but, I don’t think just by sharing what your loved ones got you would demean other aspects of Christmas in any way, which I am sure you’d agree with. It’s just a wonderful part of the holiday, not the entirety, and most of us just love those videos because it’s a sweet addition to the ongoing festivities of the day. Rest is upto you of course! I found I started enjoying Christmas a lot more once I started full time work. Christmas felt special and like an actual treat, in the same way it did when I was at school. Maybe you need more structure in day to day life so the festive season feels special and exciting again.

Interesting, for me it is the opposite unfortunately. As a child I had a lot less to do and therefore had a lot of time to enjoy the time before christmas and felt well prepared for any festivities. Now I am lucky if I have time to bake 2 kinds of cookies and write some cards before christmas arrives way to quickly to fully enjoy it and get into the christmas mood.

I haven't felt Christmas since many years, I used to love it when I was younger. Now it just reminds me of all the loneliness in my life even more. I am usually forced to spent Christmas with relatives I do not like nor I am close with. They get drunk, talk about politics, others bring along their SO and it just reminds me year over year how much of an outcast I am. This year is even worse, as my Grandmother just passed away yesterday, one day before Christmas eve. It makes it even weirder. I am couple years older than Ruby but I think I understood now. Christmas should not be about faking happiness or family traditions when one doesn't feel like it. It should be spent in a way that makes you happy. I just wish everyone that celebrates it a calm, cosy time and a way to somehow make it feel right to you ❤

I wasn’t also feeling festive before a week and also have some family challenges alongside. What I did those days was to let the burden days rest in this times, it helped me to be in tranquil. Have you beenwatching The Nutcracker and the Four Realms? (I briefly saw a screenshot somewhere in your video.) I've added it to the list of my favorite Christmas films some years ago because I love it so; above all it makes sense of the fact that the heroine is called Marie in some versions and Clara in others...And Helen Mirren as the freedom-fighting Mother Ginger and Kiera Knightley as the warmongering Sugarplum Fairy are both a riot!

@RubyGranger8 There's only onme snag in the plot and I do not know if you noticed...Clara's mother, Marie, is known as Marie Stahlbaum in the magical country, which means that this is her birth name. And her husband's, Clara's father's name is Benjamin Stahlbaum, so you'd imagine she took that name when she married (well unless Benjamin is her cousin or something). So it's a bit strange that her birth name and her married name are the same; even Drosselmeyer says it's Stahlbaum...As far as I know, in the ballets it's either Marie Stahlbaum or Clara Silberhaus... BTW, I've seen Mathilda by now too and love it! I really got to it because I saw one of the authors of that musical, Timothy Minchin, in another production...
