There's something achingly haunting and poignant about ONE note in this song.... That intro riff, the siren-like 2 note thing just going over the bass.... Around 0:10 one of those notes is like a semi-tone higher....and something about _that note_ when it comes in....is pure 90s Pumpkins....and just does something to me emotionally that I can't even articulate. This song shows the amount of good material they had back then. It was worked out and demoed during the writing of "Siamese Dream" and not recorded for the album or a B-side. I was at the VIP show a year and half ago here in Nashville and asked Billy: If you could go back and pick just one song to be released as a single that wasn't, what song would it be? Billy said: it would have been "Set The Ray to Jerry", said that Flood just hated this song though so it ended up not making it.

Corgan has admitted that he was often guilty of over-arranging songs, and when one hears the results of tasteful restraint such as here it's easy to agree with him. Chamberlin's playing is unreal. If anyone reading this can confirm with certainty that it's D'arcy's bass line I would appreciate a confirmation. I think it's her playing but with Corgan cracking the whip it's never easy to know.

I wonder if D'arcy or Billy did the final bass take on this one...
@Brinta35 жыл бұрын
GracefulNanami Billy played the bass on the recording. But I think it would have sounded very much the same if D’Arcy had played what Billy had written. “This bad pun of a title stems from an inside joke, taken from the annals of a romance gone wrong where I referred to myself in the 3rd person as 'Jerry'; in honor of the famed comedian Jerry Lewis. Hence my mind's correlation to another man's name, in this case 'Ray' or; an endless beam of light; which denotes this song surreptitiously as 'Please Set the Endless Ray of Light Machine to Billy.' A leftover from the Siamese era, it would attract little love from producer Flood, who thought the whole journey a bit draft despite its occasional atmospheric quality. James would provide the under-chime, all of 3 notes he'd hypnotically repeat ad nauseam. The basic track was performed live at Pumpkinland, with myself on bass and Jimmy on interloping drums, our total time of recording top to bottom somewhere in the 3 to 4 hour range. So you see, miracles occasionally did happen in our world, as faithfully documented here.”
