@keyofgeebz Jimmy Chamberlin comes from a Jazz and Polka background. He often uses the pedal of the hi hat to keep time with his left foot. If you look up Frank Catalano and Jimmy Chamberlin you will see him with his jazz band. They're so amazing especially when you can catch them live.

Get exactly what you mean. And Pumpkins is all about Billy being a true poet, like you said. If one isn't listening to his lyrics very seriously, with the mindset of "this is poetry, not merely song lyrics", one is missing a huge part of Pumpkins magic. I know this is a year later reply... just saw them in Sacramento a few weeks ago, so on a binge. Seeing the 2000 Universal Amphitheater show (after he gave an interview on KTLA that afternoon announcing the original breakup), with 3 encores and Mayonnaise as the final song of the show is one of the greatest privileges of my life.

Probably the best song on the best album of the 90's in my humble opinion. This really is the work of a band at the height of their power. Jimmy Chamberlain is a phenomenal drummer, he can give it power in the more fierce tracks of the album (tales of a scorched earth, an ode to no-one) but he also knows when to reign it in and contribute to the overall sound without overwhelming.

Very excited to see you do this song. This is one of my all time favorite songs. MCIS is an absolute masterpiece from start to finish. This song is very much about Jimmy on the drums too. He's a beast. The piano sound you can't identify may be a mellotron. Also, I wanted to add that the disks in the set were titled "dawn to dusk", and "twilight to starlight" Both disks start and end with their own atmosphere. If you listen to the ending track of twilight to starlight, you can hear some similarities.

I’m so glad you did this song. This is one of my all time fav pumpkins songs. It’s such an underrated gem. It has this quality that I’m always searching for, and it’s hard to explain. An epicness that inspires my creativity. That makes me want to imagine whole new worlds to weave into my perfect story. I guess I want to be inspired and not a lot of music can do that for me. So when I find one I become obsessed with it. Also I can’t get enough of songs that have that climb to a crescendo, Muse Uprising has it too, just givea me all the feels.

What I miss about listening to this on CD was seeing the artwork on the discs when I replaced one for the other. The two cherubic faces captured the mood of each album perfectly. On Dawn to Dusk the expression is content with a slightly mischievious smile, while on Twilight to Starlight the expression is sad, but also adversarial, and the eyes suggest anger beneath the (infinite) sadness. It's as if Billy is saying "oh you had fun on that disc? Well fuck you, it's time to cry" Thank you for this awesome reaction and analysis. Would love to see you hit something from the their first album, "Snail" is my favorite but "Rhinoceros" will get the most clicks.

Great comment about the “tie-in” at the end. MCIS has a few moments like that where songs cross reference each other and help to bind the concept of the album together. The acoustic guitar at the end is the same as the one in Farewell and Goodnight, which in turn has a melody that reflects the opening MCIS piece.

This song is a brutal masterpiece. Brutal in the range of emotion it brings out in me as a listener. It's like an addiction I revisit every few months. Hearing it now, I will end up listening to it for a few weeks and then have to walk away from it, cold turkey, only to pick it up again in a few months. From the toy-piano-like tinkling of the strings behind the nut at the beginning to the HUGE wall of guitars and then the simple arrangement for the fade-out, which is almost like the end of the saddest country-and-western song. Which is odd, because I generally am very happy hearing country music songs finish. The warmth discussed here is the 70-some-odd guitar overdubs used in the chorus.

The ending of the song is a reference to/reprise of the first track of the entire album, which was the TITLE track, and was purely instrumental.

Thru the Eyes of Ruby is, for me, definitely that gem on this album that you mention. This album was a key part of my high school soundtrack, and this song was my favourite of the album if not their entire discography. It may still be, it's been years since I've listened to the full double EP end to end, and my tastes have changed in the intervening years. That said, listening to this with you just now I was pulled right in and it gave me all those good vibes again. Mahalo!

I love that you caught the high hat pattern in the intro on your first listen and also made the Tool connection. Cheers! The magical delicacy of Jimmy's drumming over the massive walls of fuzz cannot be overstated. The univibe on the background guitars at the end send everything further into space.

You're reactions are always so amazing. I agree wholeheartedly that this track is very warm sounding and Billy's vocals are definitely further back in the mix. You hit it head on where this was never a single but definitely a hidden gem and one I think true fans really love. It's definitely one of my favorite SP songs of all time. Reminds me of a hidden gem from Soundgarden (Tighter and Tighter). Good luck on the surgery!

So glad you reacted to this song! Also, the bassist is not a guy. It's D'arcy Wretzky. She is a phenomenal bassist. Hope the shoulder heals up soon! More SP please! For Martha or, Behold! The Nightmare.

What is great about the production of this song is how at the end it gets so simple and in your face after that big epic sound. The whole song has so many parts that are different but each part flows so well into the next and seems to contribute to the whole. Great great song.

the ending is a "hidden gem/callback" to Mayonnaise. That's how I've always heard it. That final "shooting star" guitar note is very similar to how Mayonnaise ends. And this is track 7 on disc 2.... the final track is a literal Pumpkins version of the final track on White Album.

Man I loved that space fuzz guitar tone the Pumpkins had during that era they started with on Siamese Dream. This song & Porcelina of the Vast Oceans.... Exquisite compositional masterpieces.

I can tell you exactly where i was when i first heard that ‘double album’!! It was a thing of beauty. Was revising with my girlfriend at the time, got the record from a mate and played it... well no revising after that! I played it so many times, what a fantastic record this was and still is- up tempo and very soft there is so much in it. And there is D’arcy on the bass!! Not the same when she left!! It brought me back to that revision table, thanks Geebz!! Aloha🤙🏻

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness was the very first CD I ever bought. I spent so much time in my room blasting this album while doing whatever. I had always dealt with severe depression and anxiety. This album really engulfed me as a young teen. I don't like who Corgan is now but he definitely influenced me. Killer track. This album is definitely a journey. You doing alright? You paused for several seconds in the middle there and you looked as if you were contemplating or even mourning. My right shoulder is completely torn apart as well so I feel ya on that. Take it easy my dude.

Awesome video as always. I just had to pause for a second to say this has been my favorite SP song since it came out, and I personally believe it's the absolute pinnacle of their catalog. It's the perfect, shining example of who and what the band is all about, and if I needed to introduce someone to the band with one song, this would be it. It just perfectly encapsulates every element of the Pumpkins sound in one brilliant package. And still to this day, it remains one of the most beautiful and emotional songs I've ever experienced.

Good mention about the drums on the ride. Most bands make that mistake and think high hats and big crashes are where it’s at but it will drown vocals and guitars. Top notch drummers will even have different rides and cymbals in different keys to match the song. Great drummers make great bands.
