The energy that this band emitted from the stage was unbelievable, you could cut it with a knife. I was fortunate to have seen them live a few times back then (always in front of the stage) and can honestly say that very few bands had the same intense energy that the Smithereens had which was reciprocated back to them from the audiences. Truly a cathartic release!

I first saw them after Especially For You came out and was blown away. Then, I stumbled onto them performing on the beach in Virginia Beach, VA in 2008 many years later. Someone wanted to give away their front row position and we went to the stage and saw them up close. Blown away again. Saw them again at the State Theatre in Falls Church, VA a few years after that celebrating the 25th anniversary of Especially For You. I loved this band. Pat Denizio truly was a gifted songwriter with a great voice. May his memory be a blessing.

He had some kind disease that gave him nerve damage from about 5 years ago that also effected his thyroid. The thyroid problems gave him uncontrollable weight gain. Then a couple of years ago he fell down and lost all movement with his right arm and hand. He couldn't play anymore to make money. Friends and musicians did fundraisers for him. He was penniless and couldn't afford his much needed health insurance and a roof over his head. He suffered badly. Have to find out the medical examiners report in a week or two for actual cause of death. He suffered badly though the last 5 years of his life.

I've followed them since the beginning and continue to see them live around here in Jersey...their anniversary concert in Carteret was incredible...they continue to involve their fans, and I'm still shocked that people will mention Springsteen, Bon Jovi yet fail to acknowlege the contributions of this band, whose music i think holds up far better throughout time. Springsteen can be so political and dated, and Bon Jovi is a great 80's flashback, but today...really? Give it up for The Smithereens!

I remember seeing these guys in San Diego at the 91x Street Scene back in 1986. Back in those days they were all playing Rickenbackers...except for Mike the bassist...I believe he still played the trusty Fender P-bass. Jimmy the lead guitarist can make anything he plays sound like a million bucks. There was a clip on here with Pat playing the ending lead riff on Blues Before and After an appearace from SNL late 80's or so. He killed it! that guitar was screaming. Must have been a copyright thing
