I got turned on to these guys & like everyone else, fell head over heels in love with them. So cool, so authentic, so damn fine pop rock. I was a DJ on an FM radio station in Melbourne Australia when this got released & talked the music director into putting it on the playlist. To her credit, she knew it wasn’t on brand for the station at the time (FOX) but loved the song so much she added it anyway. We got tons of calls saying they loved the song! Saw them live circa 1993 and still one of the best rock shows I’ve been at. Simply a GREAT rock n roll band. 👏

A statement from Jim, Dennis & Mike Today we mourn the loss of our friend, brother and bandmate Pat DiNizio. Pat had the magic touch. He channeled the essence of joy and heartbreak into hook-laden three minute pop songs infused with a lifelong passion for rock & roll. Our journey with Pat was long, storied and a hell of a lot of fun. We grew up together. LONG LIVE THE SMITHEREENS !

RIP Pat, you left your mark....an awesome one!!! I was lucky enough to see The Smithereens live at the old Ziggy's in Winston Salem NC. I grew up in Westfield and Fanwood NJ in the early to the '70's.... I later found out Pat lived in Scotch Plains right next to Fanwood. Talk about a small world!!! Being a guitar player, seeing them playing Rickenbackers, Fenders, and Gibson SG 's, made me love them more. I was devastated to find out Pat passed away on my birthday, Dec. 12th. I know you're rocking hard in heaven.... Cracking funny jokes and belting out some amazing vocals.❤😎🎸

This is what genuine pure rock and roll was always meant to sound like. How this wasn't a bigger song in it's day is a complete mystery-and, quite frankly, an insult to rock and roll. These guys have a boatload of great songs that may just land them in the Rock & Roll Hall Fame someday. Pat deserved to see it.

You can keep the Ramones and Cheap Trick. Those two bands weren't even close to the magic the Smithereens were producing back in the 80's and early 90's. New name here, same old Ayleid King, lol. True that about Mike Mesaros having some of The Stranglers as his influence. He always remained the mysterious figure in the band, never spoke, never gave interviews, but in it's own way it has everyone remembering him as the one and only. And in retrospect, that's good enough for me. And yes, the Smithereens are my fellow New Jerseyeans, and definitely do our state proud, unlike other images we live with thanks to rude people and TV's Jersey Shore.

I like this video a lot because: it's a good song, it's of the band members just being happy in a place they like, they are subservient to the song - there's no stupid back story, and personally I'm from Westfield NJ next door to Scotch Plains (Pat Dinizio's home town) and I know that not only are these really nice towns but NJ has a suburban urbanity unique to it's train ride location and commute into Manhattan. The NY metro area megalopolis definitely has it's own historic pop sensibility.

God bless that old guy at the end, he looked like he was having a lot of fun! To talk to him would have been a real honor! Rest in peace old timer, and thanks for the bit of fun at the end. :-)

That's neat man! Mike Mesaros was the reason I got into bass in the first place, and Blood And Roses is one of my fave songs to play to, as is Top Of The Pops. Sad that Mesaros isn't with the lineup anymore, but he definitely lent some dimension to the band, as well as some mystique, as he never seemed to say anything or give an interviews. I know he did some work with 50's icon Dion awhile back, lending his bass skills to the band. The Smithereens make me proud to be from New Jersey!
