Not too many bands have a TRULY instantly recognizable sound. The Smithereens did. They were awesome.

I remember buying the cassette tape (google it) of their album "Especially For You" because of hearing "Blood and Roses" on MTV (when MTV played music videos). I did that from time to time, buy albums for hearing just 1 song to check the band out. Bands like Ultravox, Icehouse, later Enuff-Z'nuff, Kix, and many others. When my older brother saw the Smithereens' album I bought, he was so mad. See, my brother played at the same time in a semi-popular band at many of the same venues in NJ and NYC as them... The Smithereens made it mainstream, my brother's band didn't, unless you count performing on the Uncle Floyd show? He had heard them play most of their "Especially For You" album well before it hit MTV, or so he claimed. The 80s was such a weird time of exciting emergence and extreme anger for many people, and we expressed it in many ways. I guess every generation has their 1 decade like that?!

FUN FACT : THE GUITARISTS OF THE SMITHEREENS DON'T USE ANY DISTORTION OR OVERDRIVE PEDALS IN THEIR RECORDINGS... WHAT YOU REALLY HEAR İS THE NATURAL DISTORTION OF THE AMPS THEY ACTUALLY USE ...

Belinda Carlisle should've been in the video. The Smithereens were a great and underrated band. Rest in peace, Pat.

I remember going to the Rat in the 80s and seeing them live. They were awesome and became very popular after that.

What the world did not know it needed in 1992: a power-pop clinic.
I used to see them play in different parts of Long island before they made it big

Somehow I feel as though this song was missing from the Dumb & Dumber soundtrack. It would've fit so well.

I just recently started a new job (I'm 54), and a kid (mid-20s) is wearing a "Smithereens" T-shirt... and I am thinking, does he know how great the band is or is he being "I like the 80's" schtick... 🤔

most people are just casual listeners. i used to play around when i was a young man. most folks do not know or understand that a band is the sum of its parts. drums keepin the pocket with the bass player . guitar not obnoxious jut enough to make a solid rock song. salute from an old guitar slinger

I got to see them twice. I bought their 1st 3 albums on cassette. I think it was their second & third tour. The 1st show was GREAT! Lakewood Ohio Phantasy Theater. 2nd show was good. I love their debut album! I blasted that in my Ranger a lot.
