The reason the PAC12 wanted the top schools was to get a good media deal. That's why they took this approach. It had nothing to do with "I'm better than you, you guys are beneath us". This was strictly to put the best teams in one conference to compete for a good media deal. I think the AAC understood this but the exit fees were just to much. If the PAC12 would have offered to pay the fees all 4 teams would have jumped.
@STC987Ай бұрын
100%. It amazes me how people cannot figure out why they don’t want certain schools. It’s the same thing that happens all the time. Why take additional schools that lower the average payout? It has nothing to do with arrogance or thinking you are better. It’s business. And the AAC schools would certainly be gone if the Pac, or someone else, paid the exit fees. Why Memphis, or anyone signed a deal with such insane exit fees is insane.
@apena2005Ай бұрын
@@STC987 the exit fee for the AAC is negotiable. 25 mil was leaked by the AAC as strategy but the actual fee is negotiable. SMU paid that cause they left so quick
@STC987Ай бұрын
@@apena2005 I would honestly just move on and add a team or two in football and then concentrate on adding schools for basketball. I think it is undervalued how much extra revenue can be brought in by tournament bids, and long runs into the tournament.
@michaelwall3393Ай бұрын
No that is incredibly incorrect and false. It was (we are better than you and taking who we want when we want) approach and arrogant attitude.
@PCSPounderАй бұрын
Something just as important… and @STC987 is correct. OSU & WSU may have known that the AAC schools were out of reach. But alumni and donors at both schools demand a fight, an attempt to force something to work at every step. Consider this part of the 5 stages of grief. Thing is… while Texas State seems to be emerging, there might be more money in getting Gonzaga + a school with football and basketball that suits them. Just as important, adding the wrong school means Gonzaga stays put (defined as “lowers the media payout per year for conference schools.”) The previous paragraph, of course, depends on whether Gonzaga hasn’t already given up on joining. But I want to emphasize part of the math involved. The Pac will be paid for After Dark time slots. How will Texas State fit into this? There are only so many football time slots in a weekend… that’s why I say there may be more growth potential in basketball in this situation.

Remind me again, how many teams are in the Big Ten and the big 12? How about you just call it the PAC 12 because the numbers are irrelevant and stop being a petty about it. They will get Memphis & Gonzaga, I’ll bet on it.

PAC did not get all the teams they wanted but they got the best teams from the Mountain West. They just need one more school. They will get a decent tv deal and thus begins a solid rebuild come 2026!

No they didn't UNLV and AF are much better this year then CSU and SDSU. In a few years it could be UNM and Nevada, colleges winning and losing is cyclical. To Boise's credit they've been solid for a longer period. Fresneck has had some terrible years over the last ten.

At this point, I think it would be better for the Pac to go after schools from the Sun Belt or CUSA. The exit fees are minimal and the TV contracts pay them $2,000,000 and $750,000 respectively. Maybe offer them partial shares of whatever media deal you think you will get, because that will certainly be a lot more than they make now. Offer them a guaranteed minimum that you could afford to pay out of the war chest you have in case the media value is less than expected. The money the Pac could save on giving partial shares can either be distributed to the other members, or even better, go after basketball schools. Adding football schools like Texas State and UTEP, and then a combination of Gonzaga, Saint Mary’s and Grand Canyon University for basketball would not be a terrible situation in my opinion.
@scooberz2015Ай бұрын
Think ya'll (as many have done) are greatly misunderstanding the gap between the teams that joined the PAC and the rest of the Mountain West. Boise State and SDSU speak for themselves and Fresno State has been at a low - to - mid tier P5 level for some time now. Admidetly Colo St is not, but they got in because of market and potential. Utah State is mostly filler, good filler with a really solid MBB program but still filler. Why would you merge with the MW when you can drop the bottom feeders in exchange for two previous P5 schools who are both playing good football? Is it a seismic jump for the schools involved? No. Is it a CLEAR upgrade? Absolutely.
@matthewbrueckner8374Ай бұрын
So you will call the 16-team big 12, "the big 12". You will call the 18 team big 10, "the big 10". But you have to call the pac 12, "the pac" because they don't have 12 teams.

And UTEP. Neither school has big exit fees and you might be able to offer partial shares of any media deal because it likely will be more than they get now. Then, get basketball schools. The more tournament bids they get, the more money. That’s another way to earn more revenue for members.
@michaelwall3393Ай бұрын
Not when the Sun Belt is stronger and better and more powerful and valuable just like the AAC is even more powerful and stronger than any PAC creation. The rebuilding PAC will be on par with the Mountain Worst (West) and just at or above CUSA and MAC depending upon the years and how the seasons unfold in athletics those years in all sports and not just in football and men’s and women’s basketball.

I would think Sam Houston would favor the Sunbelt alot more than the other G5 conferences, especially they fit culturally alot well and better in the Sun Belt conference ( as well as SFA whenever they decided to move to FBS). Plus they like playing Southern base schools, especially the likes of Louisiana Lafayette, ULM, Southern Miss, Costal California, Southern Alabama , James Madison etc.
