My favorite Old Fashioned recipe: 2oz Woodford Reserved, 1/4 rich demerara syrup, 2 dashes Angostura bitters, 2 dashes Regans Orange bitters. Stir in mixing glass with ice, strain into glass with a Death Star ice cube, garnish with an orange peel. I love your channel! You're like the Peter McKinnon of cocktails for me. Cheers!

If you can find it where you're at, High West's "Campfire" makes my favorite old fashioned. It's blasphemy in a bottle, being a blend of bourbon, rye and scotch... Balanced to perfection. I prefer a rich honey syrup, and just stick with ango alone.

At a recent trip to Boston, I had a walnut maple Manhattan and although there was no smoke presence, the combination of real maple syrup and the black walnut bitters add a nice complexity to the Manhattan. The first second you taste the alcohol and then the undercurrent of maple and walnut come into play but not overpowering the alcohol. As I love smoked foods, I will definitely seek this Old Fashion out.

Yay! I'm a Kentucky native, still living and working in the Bluegrass, and I'm glad to see you getting into the history and deeper story of bourbon. Elijah Craig is a good one -- great to see it featured on the channel. If you ever depart from Rittenhouse rye, give Bulleit Rye a chance, it's excellent. And if you ever make it down to the Bluegrass, definitely go for a bourbon tour, they are very interesting and worth seeing! If you've never smelled the Angels Share, you are missing out on one of the most delicious smells in the world. (Heck, if you ever make it down here, I'll take you on a bourbon tour myself!)

I don't have a barrel stay to light up. I just use some maple wood chips. But I set the ice on a plate next to it. Once the glass is well smoked I slowly lift it and set it over the ice. That way the ice absorbs a bit of smoke as well.

Just a few weeks ago I had my first smoked Old Fashioned at the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City. It was superb. I wasn't surprised by the maple syrup (this is Canada after all; I've used it in old-fashioneds for years), but the smoke was amazing!! The server smoked the drink at my table by lowering a special wooden ring over the the already-filled glass that allowed her to torch the top of the ring - while smoke gradually appeared in the drink below - cool trick, and much safer than torching a plank!. Have you seen this specialized bar tool? [BTW, my drink used angostura bitters, which were fine. I've never heard of walnut bitters - how do they taste different? How would they be a better choice for this drink? Love your channel and everything you're doing!

I've seen this done with little chips of wood. Those chips looked like they had been slightly charred before so they may be from an old barrel as well. The bartender had a little cast iron plate, and she would burn one tiny wood chip on it. It seemed safer and more practical to me - less bulky, if you will. Bringing in a whole barrel panel makes for a nice video though, haha!

You can just get a piece of UNTREATED *white* oak, from just about any lumber yard or woodworking supply store. Char the one side first, before using the method shown in the video.

Looks tasty. I made something similar recently, but my maple syrup is super light and can't really tell the difference in that and simple syrup, gonna get a better syrup and try again!

Great recipe and a great cause! I'm making this cocktail tonight. My current favorite Old Fashioned recipe includes cayenne pepper and toasted pecan-infused Buffalo Trace bourbon, an idea from Death & Co.

Black Walnut bitters are my FAVE for an old fashioned...and a smoked one is simply heaven! I will have to try it with maple syrup. Question....besides smoking the board....any recommendations on other cocktail smokers? I've been looking into buying one, reading reviews, but have not chosen one.
