If you can find it where you're at, High West's "Campfire" makes my favorite old fashioned. It's blasphemy in a bottle, being a blend of bourbon, rye and scotch... Balanced to perfection. I prefer a rich honey syrup, and just stick with ango alone.

At a recent trip to Boston, I had a walnut maple Manhattan and although there was no smoke presence, the combination of real maple syrup and the black walnut bitters add a nice complexity to the Manhattan. The first second you taste the alcohol and then the undercurrent of maple and walnut come into play but not overpowering the alcohol. As I love smoked foods, I will definitely seek this Old Fashion out.

Yay! I'm a Kentucky native, still living and working in the Bluegrass, and I'm glad to see you getting into the history and deeper story of bourbon. Elijah Craig is a good one -- great to see it featured on the channel. If you ever depart from Rittenhouse rye, give Bulleit Rye a chance, it's excellent. And if you ever make it down to the Bluegrass, definitely go for a bourbon tour, they are very interesting and worth seeing! Just a few weeks ago I had my first smoked Old Fashioned at the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City. It was superb. I wasn't surprised by the maple syrup (this is Canada after all; I've used it in old-fashioneds for years), but the smoke was amazing!! The server smoked the drink at my table by lowering a special wooden ring over the the already-filled glass that allowed her to torch the top of the ring - while smoke gradually appeared in the drink below - cool trick, and much safer than torching a plank!. Have you seen this specialized bar tool? [BTW, my drink used angostura bitters, which were fine. I've never heard of walnut bitters - how do they taste different? I've seen this done with little chips of wood. Those chips looked like they had been slightly charred before so they may be from an old barrel as well.
