Hope to one day see some playthroughs using this system. As a noob who can't get to a group, I don't have decades of RPG experience to draw from. Heck, I've only been ever able to attend 3 or 4 sessions-just enough for it to intrigue me further. I'm sure this information is all too easy for veterans, but for those who want to play, but have zero experience so are teaching themselves, a playthrough would be very valuable 🙂 Thanks so much for posting this. I'll make sure to use your link when I get it! 🙂🙂

You could just try it. I played maybe 5 sessions of Dnd in middle school, then MANY years went by, and eventually I heard about TSAT and decided to give it a try. I had no experience as a DM, and basically none as a player either, but by the time my first session ended, I was already looking forward to doing it again. So far my character, Seti, a Chaotic Neutral Lizardfolk has gotten into fights, rescued, robbed, and kidnapped a guy, made friends with a half-orc bartender who he resurrected after a werewolf killed him, found a magic circlet that makes his eyes glow red and wreaths his body in shadows, used a magic artifact of the god of knowledge to find out where the man lives who sent Seti to jail for 5 years for a crime he didn't commit, and set off on a quest for revenge - and I'm only on session 3. I started this because I want to be a writer, and I'd come to believe that playing Dnd (a game about telling stories) could help hone my craft, but at this point I want to write AND keep playing.

Hopefully you gave it a try, it's a really robust system but in regular presentation can look really overwhelming, the key is which the author talks about over and over in the book is to pick the tables you consider useful to your situation and just go with it. It's not all supposed to be used together in a specific way but you can use them all together if you want.

To add to this and from my small experience of solo dnd, the biggest factor for me has been using random tables. I rolled 1d12 to decide my characters class, a 1d100 for their race, and tables from Tasha's to help determine their background / identity. Jump and google and basically just get as many tables open and read to go as you can. You can even search for quest ideas to help start your adventure. The other thing that has been awesome is keeping a journal of sorts. Keeping track of what is rolled and the result has helped me lean into sticking to the fun of the random rolls for better stories than I would make on my own.

The nice thing about this toolkit is that it's also available as a Fantasy Grounds module on DM's Guild. I wish I had found this video instead of finding the thing myself. I'd have used your link. You defo deserve if for such good content. I'll Drop a sub and use it next time I buy something though :) Thanks a bunch.

Thanks for the video. For me personally, going that far into the painstaking detail of creating one's own adventure is a bit too time-consuming. I wanna play a complete game, not a framework of one while making the rest up as I go along. Ideally I'd like something like Fabled Lands gamebooks, in other words an RPG in a book but set in a world I'm familiar with, preferably D&D such as Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, Dark Sun, etc.

I recently bought labyrinth the adventure game. The rpg book based on the 80's movie. Would something like this help me solo this game? I also bought the gamemasters apprentice cards you recommended for solo play but haven't yet played the game.

Thank you very much for the review. I think this is what I've been looking for, all in one book! Like you, I played the 1st and AD&D "Old School" with my buddies back in the early 80's. Those were great times and I miss them very much. We're all scattered around the state now and can't get together on a regular basis to start again. I've bought a few books: Basic Fantasy and the Book of Random Tables. I got overwhelmed. I wanted to get as close to old school D&D as I could. Since this is made for D&D that's a great thing and I can try to adapt it to the old editions. I was a player always and never a DM. I have the old AD&D Player's handbook but not the Dungeon Master's guide. Not sure if you need both guidebooks to play solo? Do you think The Solo Adventurer's Toolbox will ever come out in a book form? never bought a PDF, ink for my printer isn't cheap and seems to me that you could get a hard copy for a lot cheaper than all the ink and paper and binder etc. you would have to buy. Have you ever printed a pdf game yourself at home? heard it's not to cheap either if you have it printed out for you at a fedex or Staples store either.

You might want the DM's guide since it has the magic items and such, you might also need to get the monster manual as well. since you might need the stats of the monsters. If you use a laptop/computer or cell phone while playing you could easily reference the SRD for 3rd and 5th editions online. (NO SRD for original through 2nd edition though) As for PDF printing. NO I don;t print pdfs. Luckily my laptop is just a few feet from my table, or use my tablet if needed.

@@jeffrichards5106 Jeff, I know it's a year later but I have a couple suggestions and some info you might not be privy to. This being the year 2020, the era of the internet and all. You can find people to play with online using virtual table tops. There are quite a few of them as well. The one I like to use is Fantasy Grounds, and right now the new Unity version is in beta. The nice thing about FG is that you can purchase modules and rulesets for it, and if you DM your players have access to the books you share with them while logged into your session. Nicer still is, you can get the AD&D books that you like on there as well, most of them are around 20 dollars each. There are also other tools you can use similar to this one, one of my personal favorites is the Mythic GM Emulator. If you are interested in getting into D&D 5e, those books are also available, and this particular toolkit is available for Fantasy Grounds on the DM's guild as well. Fantasy Grounds is like 40 dollars for a basic license which would allow you to play in any game a GM or DM is hosting, and an Ultimate license which if I recall is like 140 dollars will let you DM or GM for any ammount of players with a basic license or demo users with no license. The basic license will also let you DM but only for people with one of the 2 paid versions. Alternatively another popular platform is Roll20.net which is free to use but with some limitations. I've used it a lot, but only as a player. Running a game with Roll20 requires a little more work, but hey, it's free to use. Anyway I hope that is helpful.

Have you ever dm'ed before? If so do it the same way you would if you were coming a group. If you need help, do a KZbin search for "Me,myself and die" and watch what he does. Just do something similar. Or watch my video on getting started. Then just use the 5th ed dungeon and dragon rules (which is the book you mentioned you are using.) instead, since he used Savage worlds and I used forbidden lands.

@@solorpgguy the video is about a tool-book made thematically more based on D&D. At the start of the video you were talking about D&D as most players know for decades. Based on that I wanted to refer to the wider people making videos and the viewers about the fact that they can find many worthplaying games out there that they are barely mentioned compare to D&D. I wasn't trying to be offensive with you or your content. Also that is the first video of yours I am watching so I don't really know if you have content about other games. I own the particular tool-book because I like solo gaming but I use the tables for other game systems than for D&D that I am not very interested about. Here some more suggestions for books that will help people to solo different games and you can make videos about if you like 1) Tome Of Adventure Design. Tons of tables. 2) Mythic RPG creature crafter and a few more in the series. 3) The Solo Investigator's Handbook. Tables for Call of Cthulhu solo. - there are more but I can't remember them at the moment.... 😊
