I saw Neil and his brother at the Royal Albert Hall as The Finn Brothers, the night after the former Crowded House drummer Paul Hester took his own life. No one knew what was going on at the time but there was something, some sort of energy in that place that night. Despite the clowning around coming on stage with his brother, once the music started, it got half way through the song, just after the middle 8 and the song stopped and Neil wandered to the edge of the stage, sans mic, and said to the crowd "I'm gonna need your help with this one" and just started with the first half of the first line of the chorus - remember, he's about 15ft away from his stage mic at this point - and the crowd, lowly, but surely replied with the next half. And it grew, and it grew. 5000 people singing along in quiet voices to one of the greatest songwriters of the late 20th century. Man, I've never felt anything like it at a gig, before or since, like a huge shiver going right through me. I'll never ever forget it, it is one of my most precious memories. The most emotional gig I've ever ever been to. There was that much of an atmosphere that night, you could have stuck your tongue out and tasted it. Later on that night, it became clear what had happened in the previous 24 hours... and why that night was such a special evening.
@mburland3 күн бұрын
@@stevem-h3562 I was there a few nights later. They had Paul's snare drum on its own at the front of the stage under a spotlight if I remember rightly. Nick was there and played, as he had the previous nights. Show ended with a spirited "Throw Your Arms Around Me" followed by "The Parting Glass." "English Trees" always makes me think of that show. Sadness, but also the power that music has, especially when shared.

If you want to treat yourself, watch/listen to Tim Finn's greatest vocals on an early Split Enz song called "I Hope I Never". It even has some amazing piano, including a solo. It makes me tear up every time I hear it because I think I was going through some inner turmoil, but I cannot remember specifically what was causing me those issues.

My 28th birthday at Melbourne's Festival Hall. Split Enz' last Melbourne gig and close to their last. Hester, fooling around, finally gets his moment in the sun, singing "Italian Plastic", and screams "hey, I'm singing on the same stage as The Beatles!". Pure Joy! Dial back nine years and Split Enz with Phil Judd hold thousands in their palms with the song "Spellbound". Never witnessed anything like it, a true "pin drop" moment. Then there was Neil's first gig where he broke a string early on and was in all kinds of trouble for the rest of the night. Felt for him, he was very young. But no doubt, Split Enz and later CH brought you into their world with every song, such great stagecraft and honesty, made most acts look ordinary

The Beach Boys were the first band I fell in love with. I was only 5-years-old and would listen to my uncle's music collection. That describes me also… Sounds like we are about the same age. I’m a hard-core Beatles fan but I never let go of the beach boys. One of the beach boys songs that meant a lot to me is “Girl don’t Tell Me.” it was the B-side to Barbara Ann. I had a little puppy love - first kiss thing with a girl for a couple summers when she used to come out and stay with her grandparents. Suddenly she stopped writing back to me… Next time I saw her, she was more grown-up than me (because girls develop faster than boys). And she realized how attractive she was. Anyway… Still think back to that whenever I hear that song.

Love the Crowded House pick. Fantastic song! I was a radio DJ back in the 80’s and I remember seeing the band Fairground Attraction perform their song, “Perfect” on an awards show. Apparently it was a smash in other parts of the world. I fell in love with it, found the 45, and played it on the air. It quickly became the most requested song we’d ever played. I could never figure out why it didn’t take off in the USA. It didn’t make it past 80 on the Billboard Top 100. Still boggles my mind.

Mom was a huge Beatles fan, dad was a huge Beach Boys fan. It was fun to hear them rib eachother as to which band was greater, while I was growing up, even though the music was 'old' by that time. It was 'their music' from 'their time' but as I grew up listening to it, it became MY music too. I was so fortunate to have cousins in AZ that were older by 5 and 7 yrs, while I was growing up. They were really tuned in to new music and we would sit and listen to records they just bought for hrs! It seemed that all the new summer music slowly filtered east at the time.I got to hear bands like Crowded House way before my friends did back home. As a result, I would write certain close friends letters ( yeah we did stuff like that) and tell them to look up so and so at our local record shop, long before it hit our airwaves. As for Elderly Woman..That's a song I cannot play anymore. 3 yrs ago, an ex-g/f that I hadn't seen in 28yrs suddenly walked into my life, through the garage door of my small shop. Even at 47 yrs old myself, I couldn't believe the way I still felt about her. I actually said "My God it's been so long, never dreamed you'd return, but now here you are, and here I am.." and I'm not sure but maybe way back in my subconscious, that song was where I took that from. But I meant it. Problem was the girl I recalled at 16, wasn't the woman of 44 I came to know, and our new relationship ended horribly traumatic. Sometimes we need to heed the lyrics of our music gods.

"Beatles For Sale" is, to me, the last "early" Beatles album. The way the production sounds still has that early -Beatles cold and raw sound that I always liked. It is truly a transitional work, which seems ironic in that there are more cover versions on this album than any other Beatles' album-a reflection of their grueling touring and TV appearance schedule in those insane Beatlemania days. This is a great album to listen to on a cold winter's day for me (it's snowing in Chicagoland right now as I write this!). This is also the last album that was made before George began to shed his "Quiet Beatle" status and became a songwriting force to be reckoned with.

"Don't Dream it's Over" is my favourite song from the '80s, and "Fall at Your Feet" was one of my favourites from the '90s. The first time I heard the latter was on August 29, 1991, when the band (with Tim as a member) performed it live in Edmonton. It was a magical moment, and I hoped the song would be released as a single. The concert also included "Six Months in a Leaky Boat," which produced a huge response from the audience (Split Enz were way more popular in Canada than in the States). I've always liked "The Little Girl I Once Knew," and I'm sorry I never saw the Beach Boys do it live, although they did it as part of their 50th anniversary tour in 2012. The B-side, their underrated cover of "There's No Other (Like My Baby)," was a top-10 hit in Calgary. "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party," like some of the other songs from "Beatles VI," is a song I like much better now than when I first heard it when I bought the album almost 50 years ago. Suggestion: If you're not already doing it, how about a segment called "Should have been a hit"?

Hard agree. I wish there was as much love for Temple of Low Men though. It's my favourite album of theirs. I want Love This Life to be played at my funeral. Such a beautiful lyric and vocal performance. Neil Finn is the songwriter of my lifetime.

Beatles For Sale is definitely an underappreciated album. It suffers from not having "I Feel Fine" on it, like Beatles '65 in the US.

One song I hear a lot is I Just Died in Your Arms Tonight by the Cutting Crew. They have a beautiful song called I've Been in Love Before. Maybe it's not totally under played, but it's not played as much as the other one.

(my perspective) Music was the best from 1954 to 1989...then music got bad/stupid/lazy/unoriginal....so I have albums, CD's, my iPod (yes I still have one..... I used to have cassette tapes, but I have nowhere to play them.) and online stuff. I have retrospectives each week..each one "a" decade. I miss people who actually played instruments and sang (no auto tune, no excessive dancing/gestures/posturing for the masses) Luckily people have preserved t.v./albums/and movies on youtube. My new home.....thank you for making these videos with the music and back stories. Makes my nights less lonely and boring...🤩

your comment about Pet Sounds being the best album. in my opinion the crown goes to Revolver. This is the Beatles really upping their game. Pet Sounds is good but not in the same class as Revolver. You know what they say about opinions.

I love "The Little Girl I Once Knew". The Beach Boys have so many superlative songs that could've been hits: "Til I Die", "Keep an Eye on Summer", "Don't Talk", etc. If you want to hear an awesome Carol Kaye bass line, check out "Hypnolove" by Wondermints from their excellent 1998 album, Bali. There's a reason Brian Wilson picked those guys to go out on the road with. Their brand of power pop is part-Beach Boys, part-Raspberries, part-Elvis Costello and part-Beatles, among many other influences. Check it out and have an excellent day! - Dave

It’s so aggravating even infuriating how big shots are always looking down small towns. There wasn’t even the option suggested that somebody could be happy in a small town. The implication is always that if you live in a small town, you’re trapped in one way or another and certainly miserable. I moved to a small town from Miami, where I was born and raised, and consider to be one of the most horrible places on Earth. I have never been happier than I have been since moving to a small town, and I have never looked back for a single second. Top 3 Best Decision of my life. My husband feels the same way. And I know many many people in this town and they all love it, and would never move to a big city. And these are not the town’s “big fish.” We’re not that far from Manhattan and no one is interested in living there. Nice place to visit, but we happily and peacefully live in our small town, thank you.

Thank you for the recs on songs I've never heard of by famous artists. I'm convinced the radio is a liar. They coyly play the same few songs over and over and over and meanwhile there are deep cuts I never knew existed.

The Monkees 'Daily Nightly' written by Michael Nesmith is a really cool deep cut from the Pisces album. The Beatles 'You Won't See Me', Bee Gees 'The Earnest Of Being George', Bob Dylan 'Every Grain of Sand' and Axiom 'Who Am I Gonna See' are others that come to mind, but really, there are heaps of songs by lots of artists that fit the criteria.

Speaking of songs that have dead air, The full version of Bad to the Bone rarely gets play on my local station these days. They usually remove the first bit and the dead space after and come in a few seconds later. I actually really like the silence and feel that it sets the rest of the song up well. Also, respect for mentioning Trombone Dixie! Was a lot of fun hearing that from the Pet Sounds Sessions discs!

I was a fan of Split Enz i had their greatest hits CD but I never had any of the Crowded House CD's though but heard their songs on the radio and videos on KZbin i like both bands; the Beach Boys i heard them on AM radio constantly before I had any of their records, I've heard some obscure songs I'd never heard before of the Beach Boys recently; i liked some of Pearl Jam's songs especially Jeremy and Even Flow but never really was a fan of the band however; i liked most of the Beatles songs but I preferred a lot of their lesser known songs that were never heard on radio like on this album here and this was another great episode of hearing about classic rock and roll artists as always Thank You Professor.🎶🎤🎸🎸🎹🥁🎶

So many hidden gem songs that I love that never made the radio. When I saw the ZZ Top shirt, I was hoping that you were going to mention "I Need You Tonight" with some of their best guitar work. Another song that I was surprised was never a single is "Kite" by U2 (obviously "Bad" should also have been a single but it got put into a greatest hits album so I cannot count it). Don Henley had some great album cuts in the 1980s that are still relevant today with "If Dirt Were Dollars" and "Gimme What You Got." A song that is further out is "Thought I Knew You" by Matthew Sweet (a song of "bitterness & betrayal" on the Girlfriend album). I could go on forever on underappreciated songs but will close on the biggest musical mystery of them all: how could "The Perfect Kiss" not crack the Top 40, not even in the UK, when it should be in the discussion with "Layla", "Hey Jude", "Hotel California" and "Imagine" as one of the best songs of all time!
@ldolphin343 күн бұрын
One thing about Neil Finn and Crowded House, even with the work with Split Enz, you always had gems hidden in the album tracks that seems so quality you wondered why they weren't singles. My favorite song by Neil Finn is Hole In The River, and all that does is justify that almost any Neil Finn song can be somebody's favorite.
