The Sonic Riders Trilogy Was Weird

The Sonic Riders Series is by far one of the strangest group of games to come out of the Sonic The Hedgehog Franchise. The concept of Sonic The Hedgehog characters riding around a futuristic setting on hoverboards, racing against giant birds is quite strange if I do say so myself. It all started in 2006 to celebrate Sonic The Hedgehog’s 15th Anniversary when the first Sonic Riders game released in February. From there two sequels in the form of Sonic Riders Zero Gravity and Sonic Free Riders. With three games with stories, differing gameplay, music, characters, and more; it only makes sense to take a look back at a very fleshed out, odd, and most of all weird Sonic The Hedgehog Trilogy.

The Babylon Rogues are such cool and fun characters. It's so strange that it's pretty much two adults being bossed around by an angry 14 year old, but that might be what having a little brother is like. I also dig Sonic and Jet's rivalry. Like you said, Sonic is the sweetest most friendly guy and Jet is hyper competitive so they have this silly half rivalry half friendship going on.

I personally wouldn't say the Sonic Riders series was "weird", but more so cool. In fact, I loved Sonic Riders and Zero Gravity so much and grew up playing those racing games and dealing with each of its Mission mode for so long in order to unlock characters. I especially loved those games because of the appearance of other SEGA characters like Nights, AiAi, Ulala, and so on. Free Riders though, I avoided like the plague and the video demonstrates exactly why to avoid that game. In the end, I would love for Sonic Team to make another Riders game in the near future. It's a fun spin-off series.

I want them to bring back Sonic riders, as it was a great racing game. And an unpopular opinion but I have is that I feel like Sonic riders was faster than Mario kart or any other racing game. I know I'm going to get a lot of hate but sonic riders is my favorite sonic game of all time that isn't a platformer. This also may have been my first sonic game and I instantly fell in love with the series. Jet, wave, and storm are also some of my favorite sonic teams ever. The intro is so extremely edgy and th art style is almost like sonic battle being sharp and cool. This series just oozes cool energy and it will always be one of my favorites. And the redesigns are also really cool sonic and shadow really look great in this art style. I just love it.

Sonic Riders Zero Gravity was my introductions to Sonic the Hedgehog. I still remember seeing that opening cutscene and getting really interested, especially in the blue hedgehog I knew was supposed to be this "Sonic" guy. I later saw an episode of Sonic X on TV, the three Classic Sonic shows: Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Underground, and Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM), and that made me learn the overall story. I grew up with Sonic and the Secret Rings (I know, terrible game to grow up with) and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. Nowadays I've gotten a lot more Sonic games and I love them all. Love this franchise a lot and I love this channel a lot, even if I disagree with some of your opinions (Sonic Adventure 2). But even when we do have different opinions, you're still respectful about it, and I respect your opinions since I know it's just your opinion. You also made me want to give Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 a fair chance when I play it. I still haven't played it since I don't have an XBox 360 or a PlayStation 3, but I plan on trying it out in the future.

I really liked This video, but I disagree with some stuff. I don't think Zero Gravity was a step down from the other game in therms of story. The more serious story really hooked me even more. Sonic Riders was the first sonic and video game I ever bought for myself. It was my 18th birthday present to myself that year and I still have it. It's one of my favorite racing games of all time right next to Mario kart. I've played zero gravity in college but never touched free riders didn't even know there was a third one and now I know why. It would of hurt my heart really bad to try playing with the game with the controls being that temperamental. I would have broke something. But my favorite memory playing sonic riders on the game cube was spinning the control stick so hard going through a loop in the jungle level that it broke from the friction. I was in first place too. All sonic did as I got off the loop was hit the wall as soon as I realized that the controller was busted. The music is so awesome I still have some on my mp3 player to just jam to from time to time. Watching this video just through me back. Thanks for the nostalgia bomb.

Man, whenever I think of this series - which I still play today thanks to Sonic Riders Tournament Edition (thanks to Riders Boulevard and co.) - I think of this as an example of how compromise with the fans, publishers, higher-ups, whatever could be a bad thing. A cool vision and gameplay style of racing held back with each sequel. First by making it too simple to the point of monotonous linearity and confusion (overall lack of depth) with Zero Gravity - it’s ok to like this game btw. Then being further muddled down the line by adding new mechanics that don’t fit the formula AT ALL, turning it into a Kinet tech demo (the game that shall not be named) - ok to like this game too if you do. It’s just sad. Though it’s a good thing these games (except for the really bad one) are getting attention again.

I've always loved these games (Free Riders aside) and I've always found them to be extremely fun to just get better at. I'd say the best game was the original Riders. It had a lot of depth for what it was, a lot of advanced skill based gameplay, and it's just unique, and unlike most spinoff racers which are super casual, Sonic Riders is a genuinely competitive game. Zero Gravity was an interesting concept, but it was poorly executed. The game is much slower, the boost was turned into an item and replaced with the gravity dive (which not only limits interaction with other players, but kills any chance of catching up) and the drift was just much less fun to play with. However, both these games have been having quite the resurgence lately, thanks to the actions of a group of Modders who have modded the Gamecube and Wii versions respectively, known as Riders' Boulevard/Riders' Workshop, with a PC release (that will allow more indepth modding such as custom stages and characters) hopefully coming sometime this year. Sonic Riders has been rebalanced, re-textured, and will soon be ready for completely custom characters and courses (basically making it the MKWII of Sonic) through Sonic Riders: Tournament Edition, a mod focused around rebalancing the game to make it competetively viable and entertaining. As a member of the Discord for it, and competitor in two 64 player tournaments, it's been done amazingly well. The game has come an incredibly long way and has a crazy amount of potential as a competetive racer, in a way Mario Kart just never could. Zero Gravity is getting a near complete overhaul, making the game faster, more balanced, and generally fun, making the experience more akin to Sonic Riders, but with the mechanics of Zero Gravity, as opposed to the dumbed down version we had with the original Zero Gravity. Under the name of the "Regravitify" project, the game has received a number of balance changes, additions and changes to the mechanics (boosting being a button instead of an item, drifting making a return, speed being increased to match the original game, etc) the game has become far more entertaining and competitive. @@jasonnguyen1072 I like strories like this in games like sonic easy story like dr.robotnik is bad and sonic must defeat him beacuse it's very cool dude and hi do very good thinks. And you can just play without watching cutscenes with Sonic and Elise in main role.I really don't like looking at Sonic when he kissing Elise I like when Sonic do cool things like destroy robots or running really fast.
