The nuance on this show is amazing. Tony respects the rules of the game so he sits quiet while Richie is reprimanding Chris because he understands Richie's right to protect his niece's honor. At the same time he's already noticing Richie's lack of understanding of chain of command and proper protocol and is beginning to form a dislike for him. Truly one of the most brilliant shows of all time.

I think it's more of a respect thing, the idea that you can't just let him off without saying anything because it can be seen as an insult to the family. I think that Richie was complimenting how Chris handled that situation. He could have said that someone was lying, or lied himself, acted scared, lashed out, etc... But he listened to Ritchie, and showed due respect to the made man. So even though Ritchie is upset with how Chris has treated his niece in the past, there was an unspoken understandment between the two and respect was given. As far as Tony saying "capable", he means that Chris still has his flaws, but overall still in good standing. And has the capability to be even better.

Exactly i really like this scene for this reason. The way they greet each other. Tony puts his hand on his face like a kid, and Ritchie notices and responds the same way. And by being the last to take the hands off, Tony is subtly saying "I'm the boss, I treat you the way I want and i decide when its over". It means a lot to me as an Italian American because back then, even though I wasn't around, toughness came through people's last names, and if your last name was from a family that was nothing to mess with, your last name should be all you have to say to get someone to realize who you are and to not mess with you. Similar to saying your a Shelby in Peaky Blinders!!!
