People don't realize just how rural New Jersey can be. They have a huge population of black bears and deer. In fact along with one for deer they have a hunting season for black bear. Coyotes too.

The Black Bear thing is true here in NJ. Tony Soprano lives in North Caldwell NJ and we get a lot of sightings here especially in the suburbs where there are lots of wooded areas. Lots of people go there to see the actual house and they sometimes have Soprano events there.😊

This season is full of surprises. Yes, we have bears in upstate NY and since North Jersey (where sopranos live) borders upstate NY they have bears too. Exit18 on the NYState thruway and Palisades pkwy is actually called Bear Mountain☺. It's very woodsy outside of our urban areas. We have all the story book creatures-lol-even the witches up here. Terence Winter is my favorite TV writer, and he’s involved with both. “Sopranos” was his breakout gig. He was actually an attorney and in his 30s or 40s when he left it all behind and moved to LA to pursue writing. It’s a pretty incredible story! (He also wrote my favorite episodes, including Pine Barrens.) He’s hilarious!

When Carmine collapsed he said "Can you smell burning?" which can be sign of a stroke in some cases. It's called phantosmia, a smell hallucination . More common signs of stroke are dumbness of the face arms and legs, face drooping and difficulty speaking. Time to call an ambulance if you see any of these symptoms ;)

For the record two things you should never do if you run into a black bear like this are try to climb anything to get away or try to swim. Black bears are great swimmers. You don't want to be in the water with one Funny thing is I grew up in bear country and had more run ins with grizzlies in the yard and while taking out the garbage than I care to count. Smart thing for him to have done would be to back away slowly. Black bears are usually pretty timid as long as there isn't food or cubs involved. Other than that they don't really care about humans as long as you don't get stupid or threatening around them. Most of them will walk right past you and ignore you. Its big cats you have to worry about more than any other wild animal really. Those will actively hunt you and you don't ever want to be as close to one as AJ was with that bear That said, i'd recommend anyone living or camping or whatever in areas with bears to buy one of those cheap plastic kids cap guns from the dollar store and keep it close by. Its loud enough to spook them into leaving pretty quickly and won't harm them

In the 1980s, I was a waiter at a mobbed up bar off of Lexington Avenue in Manhattan. When the mob guys came in, I was very careful around them. They had a legitimately dangerous vibe. I don’t remember ever being stiffed by them but I would have not complained (too loudly, anyways).

Another HBO series that was very popular that was playing during the sopranos is Six Feet Under, about a family who runs a funeral home in suburban L.A California. The twist and turns between family members relationships and the deceased clients family and enemies keeps the series plots shocking and believable.
