Western Armenian / արեւմտահայերէն (Arevmdahayerēn)
Native to: Armenian Highlands, Lebanon, Turkey, Syria
Native speakers: 1.4 million (2001-2016)
Language family: Indo-European (Armenian)
is one of the two standardized forms of Modern Armenian, the other being Eastern Armenian. It is based mainly on the Istanbul Armenian dialect contrary to Eastern Armenian which is mainly based on the Yerevan Armenian dialect.
Until the early 20th century, various Western Armenian dialects were also spoken in the Ottoman Empire, especially in the eastern regions historically populated by Armenians known as Western Armenia. The spoken or dialectal varieties of Western Armenian currently in use include Homshetsi, spoken by the Hemshin peoples; the dialects of Armenians of Kessab, Latakia and Jisr al-Shughur of Syria, Anjar of Lebanon, and Istanbul and Vakıflı, of Turkey (part of the "Sueidia" dialect). Sasun and Mush dialect is also spoken in modern day Armenia villages such as Bazmaberd and Sasnashen.
Forms of the Karin dialect of Western Armenian are spoken by several hundred thousand people in Northern Armenia, mostly in Gyumri, Artik, Akhuryan, and around 130 villages in the Shirak province, and by Armenians in Samtskhe-Javakheti province of Georgia (Akhalkalaki, Akhaltsikhe).
As mostly a diasporic language, and as a language that is not an official language of any state, Western Armenian faces extinction as its native speakers lose fluency in Western Armenian amid pressures to assimilate into their host countries. Estimates place the number of fluent speakers of Western Armenian outside Armenia and Georgia at less than one million.
Western Armenian is an Indo-European language and belongs to the Armenic branch of the family, along with Eastern and Classical Armenian. According to Glottolog Antioch, Artial, Asia Minor, Bolu, Hamshenic, Kilikien, Mush-Tigranakert, Stanoz, Vanic and Yozgat are the main dialects of Western Armenian.
Eastern Armenian and Western Armenian are, for the most part, mutually intelligible for educated or literate users of the other, while illiterate or semi literate users of lower registers of each one may have difficulty understanding the other variant. One phonological difference is that voiced stops in Eastern Armenian are voiceless in Western Armenian.

western dialect sounds clearest to me and gentle, eastern dialect a little rougher, persian/armenian, which is a type of eastern dialect, to sound gentle and a little like a song. i grew up speaking western but have developed an appreciation for eastern dialect as well.. i think the pronunciations of some of the consonants in the eastern dialect (b, p, r, k, g) are more precise and distinctive. i can only imagine how easy or difficult it is for an outsider, it just comes naturally to me.

Incorrect. To me, Greek has influenced big languages like English or Italian. Albanian sounds to me like a mix of Slavic and Latin and Armenian sounds to me like a mix of Iranian and Mongol.

Lebanese here- though I'm not Armenian, Is it really endangered as mentioned in the description? - I believe more and more Lebanese (and Syrian) Armenians are still practicing the language and teaching it to their children. Source: A lot of my Lebanese and Syrian Armenian friends.

@@ANTSEMUT1 There’s a lot of Western Armenian speakers in Armenia today (mostly an influx of Syrian Armenians due to the Syrian war), but Western Armenian still doesn’t have an official status in the country. Most Armenian schools around the world (except for Georgia, Iran and India) teach Western Armenian to their students. We also have an enormous amount of literature in both dialects.

I had a Lebanese-Armenian friend in Canada. After one year staying as an international student, her whole family decided to immigrate from Lebanon to Canada as permanent residents. I think I heard her speak Armenian one time while she was talking to her family on the phone and I asked her what it was because it sounded a bit like Spanish to me.

@@rhizoidx My grandparents are Armenian, one from Syria, the other from Lebanon. They both speak Western Armenian, and after coming to the US? Didn’t teach their children to speak it because they wanted them to “assimilate better”. Now I’m unable to speak the very language I heard spoken for years in their home, and spoken amongst nearly all of our relatives living outside the US. I’m learning much more seriously now at the age of 30. Western Armenian is an endangered language not only because of reasons like this, but because we are already a relatively small population of people on this planet in comparison to others as it is.

I love Armenian too! But are you sure there are almost no loanwords? To my knowledge, in the first millennium CE, Armenian borrowed a lot of words from the Iranian languages (like Persian, Avestan and others) and even some from Syriac, Aramaic, and the neighboring Caucasian languages. @@thepokeglot8529 There are no turkish, caucasian, russian or european loanwords, but yeah, persian and armenian has a lot of loanwords from each other. Actually they appeared very many centuries ago so it's hard to say which words are Armenian and which are Persian. Possibly Aramaic and Syriac loanwords are even more ancient. But when someone says there aren't any loanwords in Armenian he talks about very popular Greek or Latin scientific, philosophical, political and other terms. Armenian was the first language in the world that refused borrowing and therefore, in Armenian, the republic is not smth like respublika but hanrapetutyun. As many centuries Armenia wasn't independent different countries, the freshest example is USSR, started to hardly introduce foreign words, so Armenian could be absolutely "clear" language as Icelandic, but it's not

Chanaparh = path/way (ultimately from proto indo european *kwel, so distant cousin of words like “culture”), -ord (suffix for doer of action, from PIE *dhro), -utiun (suffix for forming abstract nouns, same as English/French “-tion”, like in “liberation”). So, “path-goer-ation”, or “path-goer-ship” :)

This language spoken in İstanbul from armenian diaspora and some different from eastern armenian.its like flemish and afrikaan. Weatern armenian name is istanbul dialect. In the 18th century, this language was largely separated from Turkish influence.It is a purely Armenian dialect.There are 55,000 speakers in Turkey and mostly speakes in georgia, syria, lebanon, iran and other middle eastern countries Nearly 1.5 million people speak western armenian in the middle east. Eastern Armenian was heavily influenced by Russian. Western armenian words are isolated. This is close dialect then eastern armenian.

Actually Eastern Armenian is not influenced by Russian that much We in Eastern Armenian have more loanwords from Turkish and Persian than Russian. But since the break from the Soviet Union many of the loanwords have been reformed to new Armenian words. Russian influenced only some Armenians, vocabulary can differ greatly between families even if they’re both from Yerevan, some families speak Armenian with 30% Russian words, but that’s far in between and only older generations do that. And Russian had no influence on the phonology since Eastern Armenian keeps the same phonology as Classical Armenian (but dropped few vowels “œ” and “y”) whereas Western doesn’t, many western dialects adopted ö and ü sounds from Turkish influence and some the hard H from Arabic. The “purest” Armenian is considered the dialects of Hamshen Armenians (Who live in Abkhazia and Turkey) their language is the closest to Classical Armenian in all ways even conjugation system is the same where’s in eastern and Western Armenian it’s been evolved. My grandmother works at Matenadarn (where we keep all the Armenian texts, books, philosophies ext, from 4th century and onwards) and she confirmed that to me the other day.

@@Incidental104 I did not know these. Armenian historian and writer in turkey sevan nişanyan he said I wrote. Even I learned from him he uploads these in turkish videos on youtube. I have Armenian friends in Turkey. They dont say istanbul or constantinopol. They says for this city "bolis". When I asked my friends they said they don't know either. why do they use this name? I would be glad if you know and write.I'm curious about the this city name for armenian etymology.where does it come from?

@@leviathan4846 I’m not sure but Bolis comes probably from Greek Polis which means “city” and in the Armenian alphabet what’s “p” (պ) is read “b”by Western Armenians so if you write “Polis” with Armenian letters an Eastern Armenian would read “Polis” and a western one would read “Bolis” So in Eastern Armenian this “պոլիս” is “Polis” and in Western Armenian it is “Bolis” same happens with words like “ամպ” which means cloud Eastern Armenians read it as “Amp” but Western Armenians read it as “Amb”

Also, Constantinople's ancient greek name was "Konstantinoupolis" (literally “Constantine’s city”, as explained above) . I believe that's why they say "bolis(/polis)".

In armenian is 3 rows of consonants.Voiceless Voiced and Aspirated Բ(B) Պ(P`) Փ(P) Գ(G) Կ(K `) Ք(K) Դ(D) Տ(T`) Թ(T) Ձ(DZ) Ծ(TS`) Ց(TS) Ջ(J) Ճ(TCH`) Չ(CH) So western armenian lost the Պ(P); Կ(K); Տ(T); Ծ(TS); Ճ(TCH)-voicless sounds and they transformed to B G D DZ J-Voiced sounds, btw the Բ Ք Դ Ձ Ջ Shifted in p k t ts ch-aspirated and the Փ Ք Թ Ց Չ-didn`t change. So in western armenian there is Voiced and two Aspirated consonant row while in eastern is Voiceless Voiced and Aspirated

When I hear Western Armenian i have no difficulties understanding . And to be fair the phonetic differences are not so strong barev/parev. Reading in Western Armenian could be slightly more challenging-could be slightly different sentence construction and different word. Noticed that more texts in Western Armenian appear on wikipedia

To those who think Armenian sounds Iranian or Turkic only do so because they attached Armenians to such people groups because of history and circumstance. Armenians are an Indo-European people, with an Indo-European language that is within its own branch. This means it shares a common ancestor with English, Russian, Greek, Greman, etc. However, it is suppossed to be closest related to, which doesn't mean is very close, Greek and Albanian. Many scholars also hypothesize that it may be derived from the ancient extinct languages of Anatolia. Armenians have no relation to Turks, nor Iranians; though Persian is Indo-European, it is in it's own Indo-Iranic branch, as is Kurdish, which Armenian shares no relation to. The purest form of modern Armenian that can ne heard today is Krapar(Grabar), or Classical Armenian, it is mainly used in Armenian liturgy, and can be found here on youtube for anyone interested. Any words that may sound familliar to Iranians and Turks are loan words, or slang words used due to living under their empires for a long time, it is merely influence. You'll find many Russian words and Slavic accents in Eastern Armenian as well. You'll also find many words simillar to English, like Wayl, later changed to Gayl, meaning wolf, or Mayr, Mater (mother), etc. Even Latin, such as es, tu (me, you), and many more. So ya, just thought I'd share. And for those who don't know, Armenians are a mountain people indigenous to their highlands in Eastern Anatolia and large parts of the Southern Caucasus. Cheers.

As an Azerbaijani who is learning Persian, I managed to pick up some words, but not many. In my opinion, Armenian is more similar to Persian than other Indo-European languages, but it is still very different from most of I.E languages..... And I have a question, I have once heard that Armenian used to be considered by some linguistics as an Iranian language. Is it true?

Armenian is actually in it's own branch of the Indo-European family tree and is most closely, though not very close, related to Greek and Albanian. Armenian has maintained itself quite well over thousands of years, mainly in the form of Krapar [Grabar] (classical Armenian) that is only heard in Armenian Liturgy; that is the purest form of Armenian you'll hear today. Armenian shares no relation to the Indo-Iranian subgroup of the Indo-European languages. So most of those words are loan words, especially prevelant in Western Armenain. Cheers 😊

Not sure a 100% about what I'm about to say but I found out that even though it's not an iranian language several reasons might explain that unsettling feeling of familiarity (that I have too while I'm learning persian) : - a huge part of the armenian vocabulary (up to 40%) comes from parthian, a north-western iranian language - it also later borrowed many loan words from persian - proximity for thousands of years and a shared history (I guess that's also the case of Azerbaijan, especially on a cultural level?) made that many other aspects than vocabulary (like structure, grammar, expressions, the way we "think" in the language, intonation, etc.), though not always, feel so familiar and it seems to be the case as well to some extent with turkish and with azeri (I haven't learned the languages yet, but have been exposed to turkish (and my father happens to speak it) and that's the next language I want to learn because I find that turkic languages sound so lovely 🌸)

Kurdish in Indo-aryan, Armenian is its own branch (Supossedly related to Greek, in fact, Greek is the modern language that is most similar to armenian, they're not mutually understandable to each other, like Irish and Spanish)

I don't speak either, but from my Lebanese-Armenian and Syrian-Armenian friends they are able to understand each other at the fundamental level. Grammatically it is the same, but vocabulary and pronunciation may differ from one word to another which makes it easy for one speaker of one dialect to easily recognize the other person's dialect. Source: My friends, ex girlfriend who is Armenian Lebanese.

They’re mutually intelligible if both speakers are fluent in their respective dialects. As a fluent Western Armenian speaker, it took me about 2 months to fully understand Eastern Armenian

The differences between EA and WA: different grammatical cases (for the most part), different conjugations, different pronunciation (EA has 3 way distinction between voiced, voiceless unaspirated, and voiceless aspirated consonants whereas WA only has a 2-way distinction). Orthography is different too. Eastern Armenian went through an orthography reform during the soviet era. Western Armenians and Persian Armenians have still kept the classical orthography

Hayastan translates to “Land of Hays”, and Hay means Armenian (person) in the Armenian language. In Classical Armenian, Armenia was referred to as Hayk’ (plural form of Hay). The word for fatherland in Armenian is Hayrenik’

The only simillarity it would have are the loan words. Armenian is closest related to Greek and Albanian in the Indo European family tree, and is its oen branch as well. It does not fit in the Indo-Iranian language group. Keep in mind, those relations to Greek and Albanian are also very very far; they are super unique. Many scholars believe Armenian to be related to the extinct languages of ancient Anatolia. Ceers. 😊

Well, in the Indo-European languages, you wouldn't tell Slavic, Germanic, Romance, Iranian languages are related unless we already told you, they are different language families within the IE language family, they are different from each other because they evolved separately, but if you look at the proto version of these languages, you can clearly see that these languages, Armenian, and some others are related, gotta see their numeral system which is an important indicator of wether or not language are related. Albanian and Greek are also Isolated languages within the IE language family.
