In this video essay, we examine how South Park portrays toxic relationships, using its biting satire and sharp humor to explore the dynamics of unhealthy connections between characters. We’ll dive into episodes where manipulation, codependency, and emotional abuse are front and center, revealing how the show uses exaggerated scenarios to highlight real-world issues. We’ll analyze the ways in which the show critiques these destructive patterns, offering insights into the subtle (and not-so-subtle) red flags of toxic behavior. Through its irreverent yet thoughtful storytelling, South Park provides a mirror to the toxic dynamics we sometimes overlook in our own lives, making us laugh while also making us think. Join us as we unpack the complexities of toxic relationships in South Park and explore how the show uses humor to shed light on serious issues.

Actually very incorrect on the first point. Toxic relationships are often extremely loving and happy in the beginning. The abuser will love bomb the victim until they gain enough of an attachment where they can't leave. Abuse then slowly creeps in. Often starting very mildly with jokes or tiny jabs at your friends. It's all in a move to isolate you and bring your self esteem down. A lot of peippe report this happening right after an engagement, marriage, or moving in together. Their partner keeps the good act up right until you're too stuck to leave easily. Thinking that toxic relationships just start out bad is illogical. If your new boyfriend treats you like shit from day 1, why would you stay? You have no excuses for him and it's not like you have a positive view of him yet to make you excuse his actions.

Thats not what he said, he said that toxic relationships often start of toxic. When a guy cheats with a girl then dates her, thats a toxic start. Hes of course treating her well but the start is toxic. If you just take drugs together with a guy and end up having sex, thats also a toxic start. Treating someone nice doesnt mean the relationship isnt toxic.

I'm gonna be honest to hear. People who rant about stuff on KZbin about a series or an episode tend to become emotionally invested more so than they actually should be. This is why most KZbinrs that do commentary tend to be a little bit weird about what they comment on either being. Yes, men to all sides or being very personal about what they like, like it's an insult to them. You're gonna find those people here every now and then.

@@edenengland1883 They’re not saying that there aren’t a lot of irresponsible idiots out there getting pregnant and having kids they can’t or aren’t willing to take care of. But there has been a statistical dip in the number of births from people in the middle class, the largest economic class along with the one that’s usually viewed as being “responsible enough” to properly raise children. There’s a a number of reasons: lower marriage rates, rising costs of child rearing combined with a lack of wage increases, and the fact that younger people just don’t want to have kids. It’s not too surprising, considering the amount of “abstinence training” that’s been forced down our throats for the last 3 decades. People may not practice abstinence, but one part that seems to have stuck is the fact that having kids too early or when you’re unprepared can ruin your life.

Saying that "toxic relationships have toxic beginnings" is at best, a naive take. Someone that is toxic isn't going to immediately be toxic at the beginning, they'll put on their best face and the mask will slowly fade. That's how people end up in DV situations. It isn't because the person is toxic and controlling immediately, they creep their way in. I'm not sure how old you are, but between this and other comments from videos, there's some s3xist takes you need to unpack.

It may sound odd but the only thing I really enjoy about my relationship right now is my yap sessions with my girl. After a long ass day of working my ass off, having someone to chat with about meaningless shit and sometimes transitioning the topics to something deeper is fun. It also helps that we share some hobbies so we always have some talking points to transition to if the conversation gets stale. I suppose if she was only ever yapping about shit I can't relate to I'd probably get bored too, but honestly if you start communicating back usually you will have more autonomy regarding conversation topics.

I think Butter's was the main cause of this, I don't think Cartman wanted Heidi's attention in a toxic way, when Heidi ignored him while she was working on the equation, he was scared and probably felt like what Butter's said was true that Heidi was going to leave him with "poop on his heart", and then later Butter's suggests that Heidi is manipulative to Cartman and that she's trying to trick him into getting to mars because she want's his humor (which he 100% has lmao) and his seed, and Cartman being Cartman believes this and comes up with a plan to blow up Space X, and after that, he sort of hates Heidi, because at the end of the final episode, we see Cartman wiping Heidi's cheek kiss off his cheek. This is also adds up in Season 21 because in the first 2 episodes, he claims she's the mentally abusive one and not him. It's just a thought, but maybe your idea is right as well.

relationship can really bring the best and/or the worst out of someone, we always knew Cartman was capable of being good, even though there's often a catch we saw him act with good intention many time, like when he's saving cat from the holocaust or when he matches Nicole with Token, which was super racist, but also well intended. we really get a good glimps of what Cartman could be, sure it's the honeymoon effect, but it's a little more than that, i don't think it's his narcissism that ruined his relationship, it was his insecurity that have build up for quite a while, when Butters acknoledge his insecurity, that's where it start going downhill and only then, the worst in Cartman start to came out, including his narcicism. in the post covid movie, we see that Cartman could really have an healthy relationship, he's still the same, but in an healthier environnement, he can really thrive as a good person/husband/father.

It might have been a "joke", but it sounded like every girl is just so obnoxious as soon as a relationship gets personal.. and it kinda hurt, especially for someone who likes to talk about everything and nothing with their partner.

Hey, (I know other comments mentioned it) if what you said was satire with your girlfriend(and I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt because your content is good, and it seems out of character) , it just hit too close to home. A lot of people have just been telling you that it's bad but not why. It might help to see where my perspective is from, so my birth certificate says female . I'm trans and I prefer to go by as a guy, but I do not look like one at all. There's just a lot of sketchy guys out there. With the internet, you can read what they actually say and think word for word. Assuming it's satire, that means you wrote a great script, and it should be a recognizable mockery of people who do that. But, the way you said it - like the inflection sounded like real complaints about a real person that wasn't exaggerated. If it isn't satire, that's just thinking that sets you on a path to being one. If you can't tell your girl you don't want to talk that much, is that a healthy relationship? I know that no matter who you end up with, there's gonna be some things y'all have to settle for. Maybe she'd understand? And, it really sounded like way way too much for you like a deal-breaker. It also definitely sounded like you think that way about all women. Even if you really think that way, I want to believe that people can have mistakes with very real consequences (those being the really unnecessarily rude comments. It needs to be said but jeez some people here - not all but SOME really overdid it.) , and they can recover and change. I've said things I regret. I believed some of them, and I didn't believe some of them. People don't talk about it enough. I definitely think guys need to hear it for sure. Do you know the whole sinking ship fallacy? I was messed up as a younger kid. Every year, I have something I HUGELY regret from the previous year. Sometimes, you don't even get to tell anyone that you regret it and you're sorry unless you have a god or a therapist. If I designed the school system, I'd make them teach kids that instead of making being in the wrong the most terrifying horrible death-worthy thing that could ever be done. It's the reason every kid I've ever met was the biggest liar I've ever seen. I hope everything works out for you with your girl and this comment section. Peace.

I'd say the big qualifier is the action. Wanting something and actively trying to get it are two different things. In Cartman's case he goes through pretty big lengths to get what he feels entitled to.

I’ve been toxic relationship before I started making some money and then my ex-girlfriend came back to me and started dating me again. I finally had enough money and then I stopped selling products and then she started manipulating me to make more money again but I broke up with her after she was just straight up using me I felt good so yeah basically I was hiding in that situation and my girlfriend was Eric

You had me until when you started talking about the life cycle of relationships. 'You can just put something in her mouth to shut her up'? and talking about 'She wants you to be more romantic' as if that's a bad thing?? Please never go anywhere near women if this is your view of relationships and seek therapy.

0:09 learning from a therapist, on his episodes on Cinema Therapy. Things the people would commonly name(though for one I would disagree being even compared to) Narracism, Pedophile(though that one is ironic to what this statement refers), Sciopathy, Anti-person Disorder. I would personally disagree with Pedophile more because unlike the others, that one isn't a matter of choice in getting it or having it, it's more how you let it effect you. For the others though they're rightfully hated just that you aren't a Desculot lost cause just because you have it, it's more how your influenced and how react with it, even Ironically Narricism. Cartman is the result of still choosing to be the worst inspite of everything else showing you can be better.

Just wanna say, the rant part felt very well executed to me and i thought it was pretty clear that you were making a point by portraying an exaggerated charicature of a relatable experience so you could segway into the next point. Like, it was a bit relatable, but clearly to the extreme to the point where someone in a relationship would say "well... i mean it aint THAT bad..." and then you mention what she wants in the relationship, which sounded rather reasonable, but then you act all annoyed, which, again, was obviously you making a point. Personally, i think the reason why people are offended is because they see everyone else being offended and follow the mold (I just watched your videos on that, funnily enough), but i just think it was clever. If people are offended, they missed the point.

i'm not trying to be hateful this is just some advice, but I think when talking about mental health conditions such as personality disorders I think its important to consider that it is infact a mental health condition, obviously narcissistic abuse is valid and real but I think its important when talking about it not to stray into language which over-simplifies NPD and flanderising it which feeds into the stigma
