Russia is using modified Soviet-era FAB bombs, according to Ukrainian soldiers and civilians in the eastern Donetsk region. Massive craters in and around Adviyivka show that FAB bombs were heavily deployed by Russia in seizing the town.

It would have been helpful if the commentators distinguished between these weapons and thermobaric ones. I'll take a stab at it: the Russian FAB's are conventional bombs with fins to give them a prolonged glide path after being dropped by a jet bomber or fighter aircraft...they can glide for miles but I don't have a specific number to give you on typical or upper range limits. Thermobaric weapons have three explosions based on an initial small one which spreads a very combustible liquid over a wide range depending on the size of the weapon, then another explosion to ignite it generating both a heat wave and a shock wave capable of killing people and destroying building from the latter. It is an air burst weapon and the height at which it explodes can be varied. They can weigh tons and the US used them in its post 2001 campaigns in Afghan. I'll defer to others to explain if and how Russia has used them in Ukraine. Next to tactical nukes, Thermobaric weapons are the most powerful bomb so far developed. The US has patents on their use to clear minefields but so far as I know, as in so many other weapons denials, they have not been given to Ukraine to get through those 20 km triple lines of barbed wire, trenches mines and emplacements which cover crucial sectors and strech for hundreds of miles. FAB series are Smart bombs ie bombs with some Navigation system like GPS, control vanes and potentially rocket to enhance range. Video was about this glide bomb. ODAB series are Fuel Air Explosives. Fuel Air carry a lot more energy because they do not carry oxidizer, but use atmospheric Air.

"Makes a huge crater" is exactly what you DON'T WANT, unless you are talking about penetrating a bunker or battleship armor. A bomb that detonates a few meters above ground does a LOT more damage to the surrounding area. I mean, unless moles are your intended target. If it makes a huge crater, that's one that did not detonate as it was supposed to.

heavier than 1500+ is not practical for long front line. smaller are easier to carry. for now nato has better bombers to carry heavier bombs in larger quantities. ru cannot compete there.

I wrote in comments of media sites when I was in Kramatorsk in July of 2023, that the United States had sabotaged the Ukrainian counter offensive by not giving the Ukrainians what they needed to get through the layers of defense, particularly mine sweeping equipment, and in delaying weapons deliveries. America's supply of their own patented Thermobaric weapons could have allowed Ukraine to have penetrated through the mine fields in last year's counter offense. I wrote about scandals other than the one of the youngster who posting Ukrainian secrets on social media. The failure in providing Ukraine with the weapons they needed in 2023 that would have allowed them to have successfully recovered Russian occupied territory is a scandal, just as it is a scandalous for Congress’ purposeful act in not providing the $60 Billion aid package to Ukraine in October, just because Donald Trump wanted a campaign issue. This campaign issue is a non-started and the Republicans should have known this.
