A Mig 21 BIS could actually hold its own against an A model F-16 in the horizontal and was slightly superior in the vertical. Since the F-16A was a day fighter only and the AMRAAM wasn’t available yet they were closely matched in offensive capabilities. Not bad for a plane from 1959.

Mig-21 flown by India and Vietnam was the most effective against US made aircraft. However, the MiG 21 couldn’t turn effectively against many Western aircraft and was hampered by less effective missiles until the bison variant came which shot down an F-6 with an off bore shot.

Considering that the one time the Soviet Union's air force went up against a First World air force was against Israel, and they infamously got their asses kicked, I'd cast some strong doubts on the whole "they succeeded" bit :P

Depends on which era, if it's Yom Kippur War, Israel will be dead with Soviet Union forces deployed to aid Syria & Egypt. The Mig-23 is comparable to F-4E with R-23 that actually works. There were news of Mig-23 splashing IAF F-16A early variant that doesn't have BVR carrying just AIM-9J/L. IDF suffered worst losses in Yom Kippur war. Soviet Union only weakened during Gorbachev era that led the country to poverty with its military in serious shortage of funds

The israelis ambushed soviet mig 21s in 1970, thinking it was a normal recon flight they went to intercept and got ambushed by F-4 and mirages, they lost 5 migs in the end it ended up worse for israel since they sent many more aircraft and a shit ton of SA-3 basically stopping israeli flights over the territory.

@@Ropetor isn't it the SA-6 that destroyed most of half of Israeli air force that gets the SA-6 a nickname 3 fingers of death? Also Russian anti-tank missiles being used for the first time in the world destroyed & knocked out most of Israeli main battle tanks. 1973 marks the worst IDF defeats. Soviet technology was best at that time which means if US-Soviet war happened in 1973 with Soviet Union invading Europe, US might lose badly. 4th generation fighters were still prototype and at infant stage, the avionics just begin picking up and Russian missiles actually work against US 3rd generation fighters.
