Pretty good effort I must say. I've written many short stories that I thought were worthy of TZ, but alas, never was accepted. But I've had more than 500 mag and paper articles published so I know this is good script writing. Remember when Robert Redford was Death, and he was after the old lady hiding in her basement?

You must be an old fellow like me to remember that one. The most notable thing about that particular episode was that despite the old lady being aware of Death stalking her it was his appeal to her humanity that convinced her to open her door and allow Death in. If you recall she heard some disturbing activity outside and a gunshot. Redford in the guise of the cop convinces her that he is wounded and needs assistance lest he himself dies. Once inside he eventually reveals to her that death is a natural part of life itself and she shouldn't fear it, but welcome the relief of it after a long life. He shows her her peaceful corpse and she at lasts accompanies him into the realm of the Dead.

@@johnallen2771 Of course its a natural instinct to be frightened of the prospect, or should I say the inevitably of death, which is more the fear of the unknown than the fact of dying itself other than expecting it to be painful if it results from a terrible accident, violence, or a disease that has made the fact of existence a painful experience. What a person should understand is if it is a painful transition it will no doubt be very brief at the fateful moment of one's demise unless certainly they have been suffering from a devastating illness which in many cases death is a perpetual respite from the pain of that illness. But the fact of the matter is the idea of it not being as much a part of life is a ludicrous thought lest the earth would so over crowded that it would become a hellish experience to exist without the relief of death. It would necessitate humanity no longer procreating and passing along their genetic makeup which is instinctual to all mammals which humans most certainly are. Some religious types might perceive there is some punishment for the type of life they lived, but I'm not one who holds to that notion considering religion a mythology that is simply a man made construct whose manifestation merely a way for powerful individuals and groups to control people and relieve them of their hard earned money. What death is illustrative of is the Yin and Yang of existence. I'm inclined to think life is a perpetual process for whatever purpose because we know that energy never dies but rather merely dissipates over time. An argument for reincarnation perhaps. A way of having every life form to experience the entire panoply of existence again for whatever purpose. Whether this is the result of some deity or higher life form endeavoring to make all to appreciate it from the moment of their current revelation is a subject for debate I suppose. Or it may well simply be as Oxford Philosophical physicist Nick Bostrum proposes and speculates there is a 20% likelihood of that we are all sentient beings living in a post human simulation to understand how humanity arrived at their present circumstance.

Kinda reminds me of the episode where the old toy maker selling his stuff on a busy street corner soon sees Murray Hamilton in his apartment, and is told of his impending "demise", then the little girl gets injured, and so the old man has to make that "pitch for the angels" in order to try to delay "death" from taking her. Once he's finished with his sales pitch, the girl comes to, and the old man is escorted "up there" as originally scheduled.

I have a good idea for a twilight zone episode. A guy robs a store and runs out then gets in a shootout with police, he loses the cops then gets on bus. He feels relieved that he got away, on the bus is him and a bunch of old people they all get off the bus at the next stop, but he stays on the bus but as the bus makes more stops along the way it picks up angry and sometimes violent commuters. The guy decides the people on the bus are too dangerous and tries to signal for the bus to stop but the bus driver doesnt stop or say anything and then eventually everyone on the bus starts freaking out and fighting when they realize they are all dead and the bus is taking them all to hell.

A small thing, hardly noticeable, but very cool. The fade where, in the "old days", the commercial break would have occurred , was perfectly placed! It really adds to the feeling of authenticity.

A formidable paen to the Twilight Zone! Excellent plot, with very good acting. The one surprise for me was the discussion between Robert and James in the Church. First of all, I was surprised that it took place in a church of all places; (the Grim Reaper is not necessarily linked to churches). I suspect that the scene is a very Twilight Zone-esque twist and is to be commended. More surprising though was James's response to Robert's question "why is your world so ... very imperfect?" James's responds that we do not like change. I suppose that answer fits the plot (change/death) but I was expecting a response concerning the exercise of free will (given the scene's placement in a church). That latter response however might have required the ending to be structured differently. Great job on this video! 4 stars (****)!!

This is an really interesting short film. The script is very well written and the shoot and cinematography done is excellent considering the lack of a set and a budget. The actors did quite well. I'd be interested to know what kind of equipment you shot this on and also if there were any special filters used especially in the "sun-ray" shots.. The depth of field (f-stop) on some of the shots is outstanding and were done with an eye for artistry. If there are any big name directors who see this, take this young man under your wing as he's a natural talent and an excellent writer. Thanks for posting, JM

It was shot on a Canon T2i, and aside from some color correction, no special filters were really used. All lens flares you see as an effect from the sun are 100% genuine as we tried to shoot during "the golden hour" quite often.

aFilmByJake Thanks for the tech info. The only thing I forgot to mention in my previous post was how well I thought it was edited and/or put together post production. The film flows nicely from scene to scene without anything getting lost in the mix. A good clear story line right through to the end of the film.

Yeh! I agree dialog characters and story. Did not agree with, "people are not sure what's on the other side, do not realize it could be better than what it was" be careful here, you don't want people giving up on life for a chance at a happy eternity. My 2 cents worth. Thankyou utube for that.

I really like this, even if we don't consider it's amateur film, the acting is awesome. But there are all those easily avoidable mistakes. I am no expert, and I hope it won't sound as if I want to mock you, but it's so hard to not see these mistakes, because they are so glaring, partly because the rest is so good. 1) You are using the static shot, as the original did, but it is still not used as much as it should. 2) That stock footage looks so out of place. Especially in the forest, I doubt they would see a shore and a field. Is it hard to find some forest stream, a footage of city skyline, amateur baseball game and of group of people in charity T-shirts doing some work? 3) That's just a stop sign, not a bus stop sign. 4) When is this supposed to take place. Is it during Jim Crow era? That would be against the background, clothing, or even the fact that people dying on bike or using helmet wasn't really a common thing until 70s. Is it just the Space in Between messing up the reality? If so, then why isn't it happening elsewhere? What are the rule of Space in Between? 5) Try either limiting the background noise, or use just one microphone in one place. It's weird to hear the background noise changing between camera angels. 6) Why is death surprised by finding out about prejudice and poverty? Wouldn't he be the one who cleans up after lynchings and overdoses? Again, the story, acting and camera work are phenomenal, but those mistakes were so easily to avoid. If you ever reshoot this movie or make a new one, please consider those tips. Thank you and keep up the good work

Archaic Films Well, you're not too far off the mark. That exchange of places at the end was the way Serling would do. So that was apt. Good job there man. If you keep them in color, will take some important adjustment to get use to it, for those of us very use to seeing the originals in B n W. (Really...I'm not so certain if color can do as much Justice as B n W has - that nice moody filmy black and white and grey that goes so well in the Twilight Zone Universe. Creates a distance and remoteness, it seems, to make the mysteriousness of it all just right. And Please try to work out very intelligent succinct voice over intro and ending statements. That would Surely move it much closer to the Serling way of placing us into the wondrous land of imagination... Looking forward to checking out more:)

Archaic Films And on the "mistakes" bit, well mastering the violin dosen't happen by day's end, first picked up in the morn. So don't fret. Serling made mistakes also. His frequent complaint on the TZ was "lack of consistency", qualitywise. I agreed. Because although most of his episodes were good, some of them were, well...you can take them or leave 'em. But then again he had to contend with budget limits and sponsor and network censorship issues, as well as fatigue (the guy would work like 15 hours a day). And there were some mistakes he saw he didn't like, that I'm glad he didn't alter or remove as they, in my book, were just right for the occasion...Yeah, a lot of it is subjective also.

My one small criticism would be the acting, not terrible by any means, but a bit stiff; one can easily find examples of even poorer acting on the original program! The rest, atmosphere, camera work, dialogue and plotting were, honestly, top notch!

It’s pretty good, considering the limitations. Conjuring 1950-1960’s automobiles would be nearly impossible. However, the clothes and dress styles of the 1950’s or 60’s could be done. Music was good. The music felt Twilight Zone-ish. I’m not sure pizza became a restaurant staple that early but I might be wrong. I suggest hamburgers. The white guy early in the movie was wearing shorts that were casual type fashion at a later date. Polite gentlemen tucked their shirt inside their pants in the 50’s. James let his untucked. That happened later. And gentlemen would more likely have worn white shirts. Ties would have been skinny ties. I saw magnolia or laurel leaves, indicating this was in the south, which was segregated. Shirt sleeves would have been short in the warm weather. I can understand “Death” being more formal in his speech. But the clients would have been more casual in speech, I would think. Good job for not being professional in the full time sense. Camera work was awesome!

Apart from the truly awful makeup job on Mr. Hannigan's bloody face, and a few spots where the mostly wonderful sound track needed some additional tweaking, not a bad little film. I like the title, too. Reminded me of a poem by Alexander Pope. Let me share it with you: Placed on this isthmus of a middle state, A being darkly wise and rudely great... He hangs between, in doubt to act or rest; In doubt to deem himself a god, or beast; In doubt his mind or body to prefer; Born but to die, and reasoning but to err. I hope that you like it.

Good in many places but you lost it when you began the element of the prejudice in the South, the Whites Only bench. Every indication was that this took place in the present day, from the necktie on the grim reaper to all the modern cars that passed. You would have needed to work to put it into that time frame. A few signs and some dialogue mentioning President Kennedy and Dr. King could have done it.

Thank you very much for your criticism, I needed to hear something constructive to work off of, so your comment helped! When shooting, I knew the cars would be distracting if I was trying to give a 60s feel to this, but I felt the suspension of disbelief would help with that. Also, I appreciate your honesty in saying I lost it with the prejudice element. Not all viewers may like that, but I felt I had to tackle a central theme in the film. Thanks for your contribution!

Well... It had it's flaws. The worst being the sound. Between the background noise, and the music soundtrack, the actors could barely be understood at times. And what EXACTLY was the story about? Mister Death's ignorance of reality? The dead man's acceptance of his life somehow earned him a "special" place in "The Space Between?" I'm still scratching my head over what I've just watched. If I had to grade it, I'd give it a... ... Well, I'm not going to grade someone else's art. A lot of time and trouble went into this production and, truthfully, critics are a dime a dozen. The best part about this production were the two main actors. Against noise, and a rather muddled script, they kept the story moving forward. My advice, unsolicited as it is, comes down to this-- Keep pursuing your craft! Creativity should always continue on from one project to the next. Thanks for uploading your work for all of us to see. I enjoy watching artists as they practice their craft-- writers, directors, producers, and actors!
