The Space Shuttle Exhibit at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force features NASA's first Crew Compartment Trainer and allows visitors to experience the size and shape of an actual space shuttle orbiter by entering the payload bay and looking into the flight deck and mid-deck levels. This video will play in the STEM Learning Node, adjacent to the exhibit. More information is available at www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/cct.asp

I remember seeing one of the last shuttle landings in elementary school. I was in the nurse’s office for some medicine I needed and I caught a glimpse of one of the space shuttles making its final landing in the tv in the main office waiting area. Even then, I knew the gravity of what I was watching, knowing this was one of the last US space shuttle landings in history. I cherished every second of that landing in the moment and I still do now. Thanks for sharing!

Although the CCT really is a consolation prize for the USAF Museum not getting a flight vehicle (GRRRRR), the way the exhibit with the replica spaceframe was neat. This really gives you a more complete view of the shuttle than the public will EVER see with any of the actual flight vehicles. P.S. -- It was a shoo-in with the Shuttles that California, Florida, and Washington,DC would get vehicles. California is where ALL the Shuttles were built, Florida obviously has KSC which was going to keep a Shuttle there, and the Smithsonian had dibs on any Shuttle that it wanted. Kind of ironic that the one named "Enterprise" (which was really named after a fictional Starship which was named after the World War II aircraft carrier Enterprise) ended up on the Intrepid carrier museum. Oh, well... People forget that the USAF Museum does have the speed record-setting X-15 and one of the Apollo Command modules that went to the moon. It's not as if they didn't already have a lot of neat stuff already!

but in the end the reusable rockets end up costing more in both maintenance cost and much longer in turn around times between flight then expected so that part of the STS ( space transportation system ) was a frailer
