aww man, i can't believe you skipped over that amazing set of lines in the old Spidey episode! after the Vulture drains his youth and he's turned into an old man for a while, Spider-Man saves a woman from getting mugged and she recognized his age. then they have the best superhero line of my childhood: "I didn't know you were a senior citizen!" "it's the job... it ages you." 100/10 writing.

The Venom story in this show is executed perfectly. I will maintain that this show, that defined Spidey for the Millennial generation, is the reason why there's a Venom movie and that character is so loved. This version of Venom is still my favourite version too, the slightly bigger, evil Spider-Man. He's written as an alter-ego, rather than the arch villain. Also loved how Peter Parker behaved in the black suit, just confident and more aggressive, and intimidating.

I can basically remember all the episodes of this great show when I was between 5-9 yrs old, but by far... the episode that always stood out the most is the one when Mary Jane after her mysterious return from that time dilation dimension turns out to be just the water cloned version of the actual MJ. When she cried her whole heart out to Peter even though she wasn't the real MJ, and then just evaporated out of Peter's life. Not also was I completely shocked by that insane twist, I was also devastated as a kid to watch Mary Jane Watson die before my eyes and then to watch Peter's anguish as he yet again loses the love of his misfortunate life. One of the most saddest and haunting episodes I have ever seen of any show to this day.

One important thing to note is that Spidey and Spider-Carnage were hoping through different dimensions and this one was universe where Peter Parker's life was perfect (he's super rich, has huge company, is celebrity, is married to MJ, etc), so Spidey figures in this universe Uncle Ben must be alive and brings him so he can appeal to Spider-Carnage humanity. Keep in mind that Spider-Carnage is quite literally Peter Parker that has bonded with Carnage symbiote, so he would still have same memories and sentiment towards Uncle Ben.

_Spider-Man: TAS_ is an excellent base intro for anyone who has a clean slate to Spider-Man as an icon. It can be a great bridge to the basic comics and/or vice versa. It's obviously also a precursor to the foundation of what makes the Raimi Trilogy so solid. That being said, it also feels like a censored-to-death milquetoast 1990's knockoff that is trying to replicate the amazing success that was _Batman: The Animates Series_ of the same era.

My grandfather got me into the animated comic shows on fox kids at a young age. He is a lifelong comic nerd (even collected entire sets of happy meal toys associated with them) and I remember sitting in his den with him at probably 3 or 4 years old as he was watching his vhs recording of episodes that had aired that week for spider-man, x-men, and batman. He was a nasa software engineer so no surprise he could set a VCR lol. If it wasn't for him I never would have fallen in love with those characters. He is also the same guy who watched power rangers so he would have something that i was interested in to talk to me about and took me to the power rangers movie twice on its opening weekend. @Stephen O'Brien Just like how Batman is often credited as the sole creation of Bob Kane without any acknowledgement of Bill Finger's contributions, although both guys actually collaborated together on the characters of not just the Caped Crusader/Dark Knight, but also the well-known circus orphan origin of the first Robin, Dick Grayson, which was retold in the DC Animated Universe (created by Bruce Timm & Paul Dini) two-parter from _Batman: The Animated Series_ titled "Robin's Reckoning" (and once again [although this time in live-action] per the 1995 Schumacher-directed film _Batman Forever_ although Dick in the latter never really wore the Robin outfit much as Batman's sidekick until the end battle of wits pitting Batman as both his billionaire playboy philanthropist persona Bruce Wayne & his crimefighting alter-ego simultaneously against the twosome of Harvey Dent/Two-Face [who was always of two minds regarding everything due to his dual identity crisis problem] & criminal genius Edward Nygma aka The Riddler to save both film [and tie-in graphic novel adaptation] exclusive love interest Dr. Chase Meridian & his ward from a watery grave death trap, not to mention that actor Chris O'Donnell was basically playing a much-older version of "The Boy Wonder" than what the source comics portrayed & by the time 1997's disastrous _Batman & Robin_ film came out, the iconic walking traffic light outfit Robin's known for wearing was replaced with a red variant of Dick's traditionally blue Nightwing outfit, except he was still being referred to as Robin in the movie).

Great Video, Johnny. To answer your question about why they De-aged the Vulture for the show: it’s an adaptation of the “Life-theft” storyline from the comics by David Michelinie, where Vulture uses life energy absorbing technology to restore his youth and cure his cancer. He’s also drains Spider-Man’s youth here, but once Peter defeated him, Adrian remained young in the comics for years ( including when the show was airing). So it’s as simple as that.
@Johnny2Cellos

@@Johnny2Cellos it’s much briefer in the comics, only 2 issues, and then it’s done. Oh, regarding the secret wars episodes and the finale not feeling final: 1. Semper originally wanted to bring the entire X-men cast back again for these episodes, however, Fox overruled him, because it proved to be too costly to fly them in( the season two episodes where they guest star, were the most expensive episodes of the series for this reason), since the two shows were recorded in different locations. Some characters were off limits, such as the Hulk, because of his solo series on UPN, which in development at this time( Lizard’s portrayal here with Curt’s intelligence, is Hulk’s exact role in the secret war comics.) 2. Season 5 was not meant to be final season. Semper had planned a sixth season to wrap up all the loose ends; including peter and the real MJ uniting on screen and eventually getting married by Stan Lee himself. Effectively, bring the series full circle. However, the head of Fox Kids at the time decided to suddenly cancel the show at the last minute because she disliked Avi Arad, who was demanding about certain elements of the show. By the time the crew found out about the cancellation, the “ spider wars” episodes were already done. So there was no time or money to change the ending. This is why in Spider-Man unlimited, we just see Peter and MJ reunited with no explanation. We just have to accept that it happened off screen.

I was born in 2001, well after this show ended but I had a lot of the DVDs which was my introduction to Spider Man when I was a kid. The DVDs had random episodes cherry-picked from various seasons and I never even knew they were from different seasons with the story arcs until now. But I still loved watching the few episodes I had access to on repeat and learning about the characters. I also had no idea there were other animated Marvel shows that had a shared universe. But since animation allowed anything to happen which live action film couldn't do at the time, it makes sense that they tried an animated universe in the 90s before the MCU. It's very intriguing.

On the "censorship" according to john semper jr BSNP (broadcast standards and practices) treated this show mostly no different to any other show. He just wasn't too interested in fighting BSNP on stuff and decided that the best option would just be to follow along. Besides its not really that important to have death and stuff, it just made the darker elements stand out more.

@@vetarlittorf1807 i get that. For me growing up i never really noticed how spidey didnt punch and it was mostly web kicks, grapples, and webbing. It all felt like regular fighting. I just thought it was important to note that it wasnt treated all too different from other shows. BTAS got away by fighting BSNP for its use of guns, adding scenes that would certainly get cut so they can use the less aggressive material. In all the DCAU shows they do a white flash before impact to avoid showing a punch due to the same censorship rules. I just feel its an important context thats often avoided

While Ultimate Spider-Man from 2012 was MY Spider-Man & the one I grew up watching as it aired every week, I definitely remember watching reruns of this show in the 2000’s which aired on TV. I definitely have a soft spot for this show since it was the one I saw before the Ultimate Spider-Man & Marvel’s Spider-Man which I watched live each week. Watching this video definitely brought back some memories from watching this show when I was really young. I remember the whole Morbius arc as well as the Secret Wars & Spider Wars arcs towards the end as well as a handful of other episodes. I definitely missed a few episodes though which made me appreciate this video as a comprehensive overview of the entire series.

Well, you've got a 51-year-old subscriber, bub. This is such a nuanced look at the series my friends and I were recording and watching on VHS in our apartment at the time! You hit the notes that drew me in, as well. I had already been a Spidey fan since I new who he was, but the recurring thematic and, yes, the romantic parts of Peter's story are well-represented in the series. The fact that you acknowledge the truly heart-wrenching moments that the show tackled head-on, with respect and reverence, has made me an instant fan of yours. Kudos, my friend.

This will always be one of my top iterations of spiderman, I prefer him as a young man who has had experience being a hero as well as being a respected, solo, CAPABLE superhero who is also down to do team ups like with daredevil, x-men, the fantastic four and my personal favourite, iron man. Tom holland is great and all but I never really was on board with spiderman being a smaller hero in the grand scheme of things where his character traits are being an awkward fanboy when interacting with other heroes, this theme being even more apparent in the 2014 ultimate spiderman show. That is why this show, spiderman ps4 are my most favourite representation of the character. (besides the comics)
@attilaseyfullah8522
@attilaseyfullah8522 2 жыл бұрын
I agree but I also have to point out in the very first comics Spider-Man, still as a highschooler, invades the Fantastic 4 building and beats them(sort of) to prove he is a worthy addition to the team; only to change his mind after finding out they don't make money. So even a teenage Spider-Man should have been more capable than the Holland version is portrayed.
@richardosullivan8102
@richardosullivan8102 2 жыл бұрын
In the original comics it was the fact that teenage Peter was inspired by science, was awkward, inexperienced and being inventive but making mistakes even being outdone at times by his enemies' unusual powers and having to adapt to defeat them. The Tom Holland spidey was given the tech that Peter had to work to get. All the films drew on different parts of Peter/ spiderman character which was why the No Way Home while it had it flaws was an overall success. The 1990s series had it's flaws but overall covered a great number of enemies, crossovers and story lines from the comics which kept fans old and new happy.

Great essay! In fact I started rewatching the show because of this video. On a personal note. What mesmerised me as a kid was the way spidey moved. He was so brilliantly agile, fast and graceful. I always felt it represented his powers in the best possible way. The director and the staff put a lot of thought and effort in choreographing movement and shots that portray them. For me this wasn’t replicated until into the spider verse.

With all due respect. Just because the 90s show had detailed character design doesn't mean their animation is automatically good. Also, this isn't angst-ridden lanky teen Peter, nor college Peter, but undergraduate student & semi-well adjusted adult Peter, so he's been Spider-Man for quite some time by this point. Besides, Peter's intentionally supposed to look handsome, regardless of age or the medium (comics, cartoons, or movies) used.
