Linstead is a Jamaican Town with a renowned market place. This song tells the touching story of a market seller lamenting her poor sales and fretting about the disppointment of her expectant children ("pickney") awaiting her return home.

When I was a kid in primary school (probably around 7) my teacher would have our class sing this song. Only good memories. Thanks Mrs Wright.

My late husband served in the Fleet Air Arm during WW2 and was stationed in Jamaica for some time. He always spoke of this song and used to sing it. How lovely it is to hear it again.

Grew up in Kingston, Jamaica. I miss it there so much. One of the most breathtaking places I have ever seen. This song was played often. I used to eat "Salt Fish and Ackee". I was so good. Tasted just like scrambled eggs. We had dirty Jamaican rice on the side. Another good song was called "I'm sad to say I left my little girl in Kingston town..." By Harry Bellefantante I think..

I heard this often as a small child in the early 80s, so it's nostalgic to hear, thanks. Back then I didn't appreciate its meaning. I thought the second line of the chorus repeated "what a night". Now realising that it's "not a bite", and understanding the rest, gives this a much sadder complexion.

I am Jamaican and I appreciate the post, despite the fact that J'can versions exist on YT as well. Re the lyrics as given, the main line should say "Carry me ackee go a Linstead market, not a quattie worth sell..." ('Quattie' was a monetary value, I believe it was D4½, i.e. 4½ pennies under the old £SD system; and 'a' means 'to' or 'at', from pre-1655 Spanish in Ja.) --Æ.

Used to go and see these guys at Samson and Barlows in Liverpool in the late50's, then went Germany and bought this on an E.P. on the Topic label it also had the Liverpool barrow boy, John Peel Maggie May and another song called Judy drownded. Had that for years until my little bro lent it out never to be seen again.
