I had the pleasure of seeing Victor play with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones as part f the Toronto Jazz Fest a few years ago. My dad was a major fan of Victor and Bela, and it ended up being the last concert my brother and I were able to take my dad prior to him getting sick and passing away from cancer. When Victor did his signature 360 spin during his bass solo,my dad jumped out of his seat! We had a fantastic night (it was the highlight f the jazz festival for us) and I'll always cherish that final concert experience I had with my father. Victor, thanks for sharing your music and wisdom with us. Chris: Thanks for bringing Victor on to your channel.

Awesome job Chris. This is an ACTUAL musician, not some autotuned joke like Post Malone, Cardi B, etc. There are TONS of real musiciand out here, we just have to SUPPORT THEM. Lazy and willfully-ignorant consumers are the cause of most of our problems today.

What is being lost, for laypeople like me, is the experience of repeatedly suffering through Track Four to get to Track Five, only to find that, hey, Track Four isn't so bad after all, and having your taste and appreciation stretched out a bit in the process.

@mattj65816

@@ChrisWillx mostly tapes, though with CDs there was still an order, and there were times when you didn't have a remote control, or you didn't want to get up and hit the track forward button. Even during the CD era, there are lots and lots of songs that I learned to like because of where they were situated on an album. Nowadays that doesn't seem to happen. To a simpleton like me, this is the most concrete thing that has been lost. Although I do have a sense that the quality of the music has gone way, way down.

He said at around 58:00, "My brothers realize that if you're ten, you've been listening to music for eleven years". Did anyone else catch that? Maybe he meant something entirely different, but I've been told that when I was a wee fetus, whenever my mother sat at her piano and played her music she could feel me kicking from inside. I may be way off in my analysis of his meaning behind that statement, but for whatever reason, I have always had an easy way with music throughout my life, unlike almost every other challenge I've come across.

In my mind, that fast music started with disco of mostly hooks on repeat. Do agree there is lesser and lesser artistic merit to pop music through the decades, but good music is still being made. You just have to dig a bit deeper for it. With music and people paying for it, I dunno it has become easier than ever to support smaller artists directly through things like bandcamp and indie labels with an online shop for physical media and merch.

What I think a lot of these musical people aren't seeing (including me for a long time) is that the masses just aren't them. A mass of people by definition can't have a refined taste to begin with, and it was those true artists that were given a platform to perform in those early days. There wasn't any risk mitigation or board meetings for a promo campaign. As commercialisation grew, risk of investment had to be reduced, target demographics are formed, etc. etc. and the masses aren't any wiser. The masses never really picked their musical champions, they were there and they were given a shot. Music might've had a golden era and I think it might be a color gradient through the decades. Now you just have to dig a little past the surface and find those new amazing artists that are still around today.

Interesting. I get what he's saying, but he is speaking as a performer. As a performer he says "We used to listen to vinyl." No, he's wrong. We used to make our own music, for 99.999% of our existence as the Human Race. That's what real music is - a participatory act, not something to "consume". We lost so much when we stopped participating.

The answer is going back to the roots. Stop consuming this fake plastic “fast music”. Pick up an instrument and play it, figure it out. Physical touch. Feel the vibrations. Make a sound. The music is inside us all. Like all things ruined by the convenience of technology, get back to humanity and the root of feeling. Victor is sage.

As much as I love and respect mr. Victor Wooten. And I agree with 99.9% of everything he said. But,, Music is not a female or a woman. The ideas that flow to us might be feminine. But the physical ‘action’ of actually creating the music masculine (playing the actual instrument). But feminine does not mean woman. And masculine does not mean man. Masculine and feminine/Ying and yang are energies. Possessed by each human being born to this reality. Unfortunately, sometimes when people anthropomorphize energies (for example, the kemetic/Egyptian deities)/ vibration, or aspects of nature,, that behavior tends to feed the egos of those the false statement favors. Giving them the delusion meant of ownership or a full sense of superiority over others. So music is not female. Although the ideas that flow to the artist come from the feminine aspects of nature. Which, obviously males and females of the human species can experience. Then apply masculine energy for the manifestation or crystallization of those feelings, ideas, visions, out of body experiences, the receiving of information, inspirations or experiences into this reality.

Sigh....he is so wrong here. Lots of songs will be played for many years to come. There are tons of "real" artists (meaning his taste) around. They can become big easier today than before so it's not even close to the reality he claims we are in. Not at all. He is doing the same mistakes as people did against the start of pop-music etc. The music of the devil. Then it was hard rock. Now...who would have guessed...

Victor Wooten is definitely and will always be superior to me musically, I will never be close to his level in the realm of music. He did lowkey contradict himself when he was talking about quality while staying real and going purely by feels. But sometimes feels suck and you are straight up just bad, then you can't really go by feel and have to learn and go with calculated music and techniques. If that makes sense.
