Basically, according to one of the writers of the series, Viktor's parents literally made him a copy of Academy's uniform and just put him in there to blend in as they couldn't afford it. Then, when Viktor was discovered, Heimerdinger allowed him to stay on account of the boy being smarter than most students. Apart from him, there are not that many people from the undercity, who work on the other side of the bridge and almost none who moved there to live.

I’m a little late to the party but something you are missing in this reaction is that science in this world is the new kid on the block and is only really taught in Piltover. Magic has shaped the world for all of recorded history and caused multiple cataclysms. Hence the law forbidding its practice in Piltover. It would be hard for science to even survive as a concept in a world where magic already has the power to wipe out civilizations.

The reason magic is generally distrusted and feared is briefly mentioned by the mechanical guy on the council but the "war" he referred to happened 1000 years ago and involved the world runes (magical runes that were used by celestials the shape the world itself). The war devastated the entire world and wiped out several landmasses and civilizations essentially resetting the world of Runeterra and every major civilization of Runeterra now was formed from refugees of the "Rune Wars".

10:00 There is a very old game called Arcanum. Like in this series, it is set in a fantasy pseudo-Victorian era, and magic and technology coexist there. But in the game, magic and technology do not get along together, because magic violates the laws of physics and then the mechanisms stop working as expected, sometimes causing accidents. For example, in the game, a magician buying a train ticket will pay much more and he will be allowed to ride only in the last cars of the train, because if he is too close to the locomotive, then from the influence of his magic, something can go wrong and, for example, a steam boiler can explode and / or the train will derail.

LOL. Your read on Viktor is hilarious. Never heard him to be called a "shadyfuckface". Viktor being the assistant to Heimerdinger and the head of the Academy and city council is why he has the authority to inquire and be a bit more arrogant. It's great how they did the ending it seemed unclear to you what happened. Vi wants to fight. Vander takes Vi to bridge and says violence isn't the way, Vi gives Powder her doll and pretty much gives her farewell words. Tube gets delivered to Enforcers. Powder goes into bar with toy all sad. Vander acting like it's another day gives her her favorite drink and Powder still looks sad playing with Vi's toy. Vander picks up toy and realiszes what's going on. Vi waits for Enforcers. Not sure how you could have missed this.

Its not explained in the show because all thats important is Heimerdinger is old, but he is a Yordle. A magical, nearly immortal, creature from a place called "Bandle City" which is in the spirit realm and has portals that take the Yordles all over the mortal world. There are some that come to the mortal worl" and interact with the regular mortals, but a lot of them don't leave Bandle City. Every single one of them is a spirit of some kind, which is kind of the ultimate irony for Heimerdinger. He's a scientist scared of magic, but hes made of magic. Hes also one of the youngest Yordles (yes at 307 years he is one of the youngest), but thats also probably has something to do why he is more interested in science than magic. Other yordles include but are not limited to Teemo, a Yordle Boy scout who hunts legendary monsters for merit badges Veigar, more into dark arcane magic than the spirit magic the rest of the bandles use Vex, just wants to die but doesnt know how. her best friend is her shadow (for edgelords) Kled, rides a lizard into battle (hes crazy)
@Aaniel_al.Meara.
@Aaniel_al.Meara. Ай бұрын
Not nearly immortal, they are pretty much immortal. When anything (well with some exceptions) living dies it goes to the Spirit Realm. Yorldes are born there... So even when they "die" they just return back to the Spirit Realm and can easily use Portals to get back wherever they want.

Where kingdoms, warlords and so on, used the "arcane" to wage war and almost destroyed the world with it. @@NoaD.G they might change it, but it'll be absurd. It's okay when they shifted P&Z champion's timeline. It's just one small story that they shifted a little bit, it won't impact anything. The Rune Wars were a massive event impact of which felt almost every region, and every region's modern story has a beginning exactly at the end of Rune Wars. They can't shift it to even 100 years ahead without breaking 80% of the lore. With all being said I don't think it's Rune Wars in his vision anyway. It doesn't look that massive, it looks more like one person messed with something they shouldn't have messed with. And it is most likely Kegan being transformed into Brand by the World Rune..

The idea of magic and technology existing together is very interesting in stories and I saw them done in some cool ways. One is the classic Idea of any technology advanced enough seeming like magic, which is actually very realistic as people used to do things they didn't scientifically understand because they worked for their needs. Arcane kinda reminds me of the game ARCANUM: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, partially because of steampunk fantasy, but in that game magic and tech were in-world defined as inherently incompatible, because they defined technology as exploiting natural laws, while magic was defined s changing natural laws. One of the funnier approaches to this I've seen is in Mage The Ascension, where all humans have an unconscious power to alter reality and anything that enough people believe to be true becomes reality or rather the 'consensus', thus technology is actually secretly just magic that only works because the general public has been convinced it does by mages.

Also doesn't help that even though he is a founder and basically was there at piltover from the start, he is either completely ignorant or uncaring about the whole undercity conflict. Conflict like that doesn't pop up that quickly. They need to have been going for a LONG while to reach a boiling point like that but Heimerdinger seems completely unbothered by it even though there was a mini war due to that (the incident where Vi and Powder lost their parents). If he is just THAT into science to the point where he will ignore all political aspects then there is no point in him being in the council despite being an important founder of the city.

In League universe magic is FAR more dangerous than science. Runterra is a very magical place and some magical beings would be able to wipe Piltover and Zaun off the map with no difficulty. Bah, one being can destroy entire galaxies and create huge black holes. Piltover and Zaun is basically the only place that relies so heavily on science and yet they are the weakest region. Also, the event Heimerdinger is referring to in his flashbacks was called The Rune Wars, and it almost led to the end of the entire planet. Yeah, science cannot compare to magic in this world.

So she knows he is someone who is capable of doing great things. Also, again, going back to the conversation between Mel and Elora, she is looking for something revolutionary and that is why she pushed Jayce so much to reveal what his actual research was and he caved. She wants to use that. She is calculative in this sense and a deep written character if you focus on her story as well as all the other main characters.

She took Vanders lessons to heart, that all the people she cared about were going to get hurt unless and until the Top Side had someone to punish. As the leader, she is taking that responsibility herself, rather than making them bear that burden. Vander discovered her plan because he recognized the stuffed animal that Powder had and recognized what that meant. That is why he made the "oh no!" face.

One of the things I find interesting about the technology in this series is that they don't seem to use electricity or magnets. Everything we would accomplish with electricity, they seem to do with pneumatics, hydraulics, chemicals, or magic. The arcade the kids were in is an example: it all seems to be powered by whatever chemicals were being pumped through the lines Powder connected. I know that some characters in the bigger League of Legends universe use electricity, but it's not a common part of the technology, not even as common as it would have been in our world by the late 19th century.

So as far as I know, in normal League lore the upper class of Piltover is actively exploiting the cheap labor from the undercity for wealth. What has been mentioned in both lore and Arcane are mines in Zaun that presumably produce valuable resources that clearly don't benefit the undercity much. Additionally to the wealth disparaty, which is partly fueled by scientific progress, there was a big accident in the lore, also caused by science and the strive for more wealth, which caused the physical divide in upper and lower city. If I remember correctly they wanted to use explosives to connect the 2 oceans (think panama canal) but it went wrong and parts of the city got swallowed by those fissures. That has never been mentioned in Arcane though, so it doesnt have to be the case there.

Maybe I’m dumb or just too trusting, but I’m confused where you got “stuck up” from Viktor? Shady I can see initially, but where was the stuck up? All I saw was a guy acting on some notes he was given from higher ups. I know you probably finished this already but I’m just always curious about character analysis initially from people.

I do not really know, he somehow felt really condescending. I wonder why, perhaps insecurity because of his background? Unsure, i also never got that feeling again from him. Same with the politician, really loved her by the end :D

I know your gonna get a lot of comments on your take on viktor and I’m no different. I think you simply just got the wrong impression of him when he first came in. Personally he didn’t seem stuck up at all on his first impression. In fact between him and the enforcer, he seemed to be the more sympathetic of the two which I believe is what your supposed to get out of that interaction. It’s ok it’s not like everyone interprets things the same way but it does spark a bit of a flare in me every time you call him a prick lol.

Saying their were fears about the hadron collider destroying the planet is something that journalists focused on so that people read their articles. .i.e. it was massively overstated. On the other hand, if your neighbour blew up his house and damaged yours because he thought his experiment with fuel-air explosives would be fruitful, I doubt you'd be very forgiving. Also, there is a difference between experimental safety, and the ethical consequences of scientific discovery. Using illegal, explosive equipment in an urban area - probably bad. If he was doing it in a more remote area - better. Consequences of scientific breakthrough - Heimerdinger speaks from experience of what he's actually witnessed when he advises against the research. He may still be wrong of course perhaps the magic in question doesn't have a will of it's own, or corrupting effects, perhaps it can be safely harnessed.....

Heimerdinger's problem isn't that he's wrong, but that he just says 'no' without explanation, expecting that to work out allright with short-lived humans. Of course it doesn't work since people don't know what happened, you have to explain in detail why it's a bad idea, but he just mentions it was bad before in passing.

@@TimoRutanen He gives a concrete specific reason. He's seen it destroy civilisations. Bolbok says it almost destroyed his race. It's enough of an issue that a specific thing called the Ethos has been created to ban it. Piltover was founded to avoid the war mongering of mages. That's a whole set of reasons and context. Presumably this is also a settled and documented history. He doesn't give a detailed history lesson because that's more than the narrative needs - Arcane's writing tends to avoid expositional information dumps.

@@TimoRutanen which is in turn interesting characterization of Heimerdinger. It implies that it probably has worked for him that way for the last 200 years of building and leading Piltover. Which means people must have always had a lot of respect for him, which means his contributions must have been massive. Not that I would have thought otherwise but still interesting that Heimerdinger is apparently oblivious to the problems with his communication with humans.

Most of the people of the undercity are just too poor to leave and also they have a reputation of being criminals, so even if they could afford to move to Piltover or another city, they probably won't be trusted or treated very well Also, my understanding of how the divide came to be is that the city was originally built here because there are canyons on one side of the river where they could mine valuable resources for their scientific work. The poor people who worked the mines were made to live near them, while the rich people who made and sold the final products built their houses on the other side of the river away from the bad air and water and stuff. Over time, greed made the rich richer and the poor suffer even more, until Vander "built the underground" by starting a bunch of illegal businesses to help the people of the undercity not starve, but this also made their reputation with Piltover even worse than before and raised the tensions more and more, leading to the big fight on the bridge in episode 1

Welp, time to yapp! 1) I would really enjoy if you took a dive in League of legends lore. It has... It had one of the coolest stories in gaming. You have everything for everybody. Different regions with cool and semi unique characters. Cool stories that... aren't continued since, they kinda ate the lore team and it took a dive... But besides that it's great. 2) Arcane is a decent taste of league lore (even though there are cooler regions and this show retconned A LOT of stuff which sucks...). Other regions have (in my opinion) better plots and characters. You have regions like: Demacia - based anti mage region filled with based people. And anybody who thinks Sylas is right is also a Eren supporter. Noxus - The roman empire filled with all kinds of bullshit. As long as you serve and are useful, then you chilling. Dont trust anybody, even the crows. The pale woman and grand general are watching. Bilgewater - Pirate land baby! Also filled with cults and sea eldritch horrors. Targon - Filled with Sun and Moon cultists, home to the CHAD Atreus aka Pantheon. Shurima - The harsh desert that has A LOT of lore. From the rise, fall and ecen greater fall, it's fun. Also Azir was right and smart. Not every emperor has to be evil RIOT! Freljord - Ice land filled with Demi gods, horrors and Braum, the gigachad. Ionia - If anybod sais they care abput Ionia, they they are either a weeb or bigger weeb. Ninjas, mantras and samurais, the walls are alive and so is the dirt. Your house can just take a stroll when ever. Shadow Isles - Once the blessed Isles, corrupted by dark magic of a dumbass king who was has his osn item. Blade of ths Ruined king. We thought he was going to be a cool undead old dude, but no, just a hot topic fuckboy. There is one other region, but it has not that much lore so who care?

Ionia is far more about Spirits than samurais tbh. Yes, there are blade masters, but everything revolves around the magic of the spirits.
