Much like how I was stumped during Halloween this year about what to cover as a themed video, I was kind of stumped for what to do on Christmas. My general idea these days is to try and focus on games that I associate with the holidays, and I couldn't really think of any games like that, except for one. Unfortunately it kind of means going back on a personal rule. When I was age 6 when my parents bought the family A PS1 along with a stack of games. Within that stack was the Spyro trilogy. I was the first person to play the system, and the first game I picked was Spyro the Dragon. My affection for dragons drew me to it immediately. That simple choice led me to being a lifelong fan, possibly making this the most significant Christmas present I ever got.

As someone who personally dislikes a LOT of your old channel's videos (the Wrath of Cortex review you did being particularly bad/drawn out), I respect how far you've come. Coincidentally at the time you published this, I'm literally about to beat Spyro 3 on PS1 again by fighting the Sorceress in the Super Bonus Round. Like, no joke, I'm about to fight her in the saucers now. I needed something Spyro-related to keep me in the mood since I've been obsessed with the purple dragon again, so thanks for dropping this so suddenly. I will watch this while working on commissions I owe people from weeks ago

I'm the OLDEST sibling in my family, and the older I get the more I seem resentful -- not so much of the fact that I'm the oldest, but rather of all the things that have happened since my younger siblings started growing up. Also, Stuart Copeland wrote the opening song for Star Wars Droids, of all things...and it's pretty catchy. Merry Christmas, TBP!

I believe the reason the European version is called Gateway to Glimmer is because they felt Europeans would find the more fantastical name more appealing while Americans would find the more aggressive name of Ripto's Rage more appealing.

My favorite Spyro memory came 25 years ago. It was December 31, 1999 and Y2K was on everyone’s mind. I decided that if the world was going to end I was going to go out doing something I loved. So I popped in Spyro 1 and played past midnight. When my PlayStation didn’t die I figured everything was going to be okay.

Always happy to see a fellow YotD fan. Admittedly it was the first of the trilogy that I played (we got them in reverse order, YotD was a Christmas present and the first game I ever owned for myself) but even 25 years later and having played all 3 dozens of times over it’s still my favorite. It was also my favorite game of all time until Cyberpunk’s 2.0 update edged it out. Now that Reignited is on GamePass I’m doing another playthrough of all 3 to get all the achievements on another system and of course started with YotD.

Eh, even though the Elora monologues before & after the stages in Spyro 2 outright explaining what part Ripto played were cut, the context clues still basically say clearly that the reason Avalar is in such chaos is because of Ripto's antics. The Landblubbers & Breezebuilders were at peace until recently, the Earthshapers are just now running rampant again, the sheep terrorizing Metropolis are new, etc.
@TBP

And if you talk to the characters in the levels, Ripto is rarely if ever mentioned. Within context, Ripto arriving and everything in the individual levels being chaotic aren't related.

The only games I put more hours into other than Spyro titles were Pokémon. The rendering method and animation style will always stick in my mind as what I think of first when someone says, "Playstation 1." Replaying them in the Reignited trilogy was a ton of fun, but there really is something special about the original releases. They cemented my love of Insomniac, and I wish they'd give more attention to Ratchet and Clank than Wolverine, Spider-Man, and Miles Morales. If they did a new Spyro, I'd love to see how the new wave of devs would handle it and add to the formula. And Disruptor is solid. I love the art direction and sounds, but perhaps it's a blessing it didn't start a franchise. Maybe if it was a hit, we wouldn't get Spyro or its sequels. Maybe with the success of platformers like Astro Bot, we could see more Spyro in the coming years. I doubt it, because studios are more focused on monteization than making a quality game.

Do I have to WELL ACTUALLY you? Why yes, yes I do. Spyro 1 has analog controls. Full Dualshock support. Also, Reignited can be made VERY close to PS1 OG. Not just because it uses Unreal (and easy to mod), but also because most cutscenes are pre-rendered. So, fans with skill, TASTE, and perhaps free time, can remake all the Reignited cutscenes with the old voices, and tweaked details.

I’d like to add something about Rypto, not as a defense but just giving my input a bit on him as a villain from a personal experience. The big selling point of Rypto to my 7 year old self, even as short and undercut as he’s presented in the game,was unlike Bowser, Cortex and even Gnasty Gnorc - all bosses you worked up to and rarely if ever actually encountered out in the regular worlds, Rypto’s cutscenes and encounters in the game happen out in the overworld hubs. Knowing that the side characters were scared of him, and we got glimpses of him and his subordinates wandering around areas that were meant to be safe havens for me/Spyro felt really intimidating and I had this overwhelming dread I’d cross paths with in if I Wasn’t careful. Just my two cents as someone who has strong nostalgic repulsions from him specifically.

26:24-26:37 They’re literally called RIPTOcs because they’re Ripto’s minions. And while yes that’s not what they’re called in THIS game they’re named and called that in other Spyro games that Ripto appears in. So you’re saying, in all the other games where similar baddies appear and they’re explicitly called RIPTOcs and linked to Ripto that’s canon but the FIRST game that Ripto appears in an almost identical race of creatures just randomly appear, cause havoc and just coincidentally show up when Ripto does and they have nothing to do with him? It takes more mental gymnastics and sounds more nonsensical to assume that the baddies have nothing to do with Ripto in a game titled Ripto’s rage.

When it comes to your words towards the end of the video, I think I can definitely relate. You mentioned 2 being your least favorite of the trilogy but it's my favorite and after playing the whole trilogy and thinking back on it now, even with its flaws I think 2 is still my favorite and always will be not because of the game itself, but because of how I got it; it was a Christmas gift from my family. They thought of me when they saw the cover and even though they don't play games they thought I would like it. That's also how I got into Twisted Metal, Metal Gear, and Medievil, watching my cousins play 2 and the other games. Nostalgia aside all the games in the trilogy still hold up and honestly, it's sad that the planned 4th game that was supposed to come out after the trilogy remaster was cancelled.

Amazing video, I connected with a lot of the stories you told and I love hearing other people that have connected with this series and their stories. Oh and as a huge fan of The Police and a Spyro fan Stewart is a musical genius and the secret weapon of the band (I mean the band is already three different musical secret weapons but he’s the best). I played Spyro with my dad as a kid and he’d play his Police CDs driving in the car and be like “did you know the drummer of this band did the music for Spyro?”. There’s a lot of songs by The Police that just sound like Spyro years before Spyro. Stew even sampled the stick click intro of the song Deathwish for the intro to Agent 9’s Lab. That theme really shows off his composition skills because the song is in an odd meter of 7/8 but it’s all so smooth that even dumb 3 year old me couldn’t explain the theory behind the music but I was still bobbing my head. Anywho thanks for the video, Spyro really is the best series to reminisce and look back on life and memories.

Spyro: A Hero's Tail was my introduction to this series and I loved it, warts and all. I've played various other Spyro games, including the Legend of Spyro trilogy, the Skylanders games and the Reignited Trilogy and found something to appreciate about all of them... but I don't think anything can recapture or recreate how playing A Hero's Tail made me feel growing up. Yes, it's nostalgia, but... I loved that old game. Easily one of the best games I ever played on my PS2 back in the day, up there with Crash Twinsanity and various movie/TV tie-in games that I enjoyed, the latter being what got me into gaming in the first place, if you can believe that. I don't know what, if anything, is next for Spyro (I'm not sure I believe the 'Spyro 4' rumours that have been circulating for the last couple of years), but I cannot deny that it is a great franchise regardless of which iteration we're talking about, and I hope it gets another shot somewhere down the road.

Yep, the highs and lows the Spyro trilogy deliver and I can see why you have a great passion for this series/trilogy, like I did along with the Crash games. I still have a soft spot for the remakes, but the original Spyro trilogy is what we love as it is like lightning in a bottle for the PS1. I am perfering Spyro 3 over 2 too, as I can see the problems Ripto's Rage has, but it is great that Year of the Dragon learned from it and refined the great Spyro experience. :) Great job on the video overall and a great sendoff for 2024. Merry Christmas T-Bacon. Continue with the great work.

First of all, gave me a teensy bit of glee to hear reference to Legend of Dragoon in here ~ I feel like it’s an often forgotten diamond in the rough when it comes to classic video games from this era. That being said, definitely agree with a lot of what you stated here. Platformers aren’t quite my jam anymore like they used to be - I like to be challenged and have ideas turned inside out and upside down and often or not platformers are designed with a safe place in mind. But a few of them (namely Spyro and Crash for me….does Gex also count as a platformer? I feel like it’s in that category) I can return to at any time and just enjoy them for what they are, and what they were in their hay day.

Amazing video, Kris. And as for what Police fans think of Stewart Copeland, most of us love his laid back nature. He stated that he was heavily inspired by reggae drummers especially, and while I'm not really well versed in music theory and reggae music...there's just something about his drumming that really helps the Police sound like they've been around forever. Something that makes them stand apart from most bands in the late 70's and early 80's. He's personally my favorite member of the Police. Just a really chill dude who is passionate about the music he makes, without the ego that Sting has. Only Sting could break up the #1 rock band of both sides of the Atlantic in 1984 because he felt he didn't need Stewart or Andy, being the principle songwriter and all. Yet his solo career, while successful in its own right, never reached the hypoxic highs that was The Police's Synchronicity. Sorry for the ramble. TL:DR Stewart Copeland is awesome as a drummer, and a surprisingly underappreciated composer. Happy holidays!

To be fair, they used those cutscenes... they just dropped Elora's explanations.

That may be true, but it eliminates the context, and the characters in the levels that you speak to don't ever reference Ripto.
@Mateus_Carvalho

@@TBP Yeah, that's true. It kinda screwed Elora a bit since you kinda just see her in cutscenes here and there after the first hub world. As for Ripto, I think he's mentioned in some stages here and there but I'd have to go back and check. Spyro 2 had some production screw-ups, I think, like how the stages were supposed to be paired up like those two faun stages or the two robot stages and how someone mentions Colossus Springs (it's meant to be Idol Springs and it was probably pairing up with Colossus) so I guess the audio went along with that on the cutting room floor.

I know it's spelled differently, but I love the fact that the worst mission in Spyro 2 shares the name with the South African slang term for hillbilly Dutchman.

Many many years ago, my sister decided to borrow my Playstation without permission and take it to her then boyfriend's house to play. I never forgave her for the fact that Spyro 3 and, to a lesser degree, the second Rugrats game were no longer in my collection when she got back.

I don't think I ever agreed with one of your titles more than this one. Spyro was also one of my first ever franchises I was introduced to this wonderful medium we call videogames. Spyro 2, despite perhaps not being the *best* game I ever played, remains my personal favourite. Can only hope these games get the treatment games like SM64, OoT and most recently Starfox 64 and it gets an unofficial pc port.

As far as I can tell the problem with Spyro 3 is that fans of previous 2 games had very strict expectation of what games of that franchise should and can be like and the ire comes from YotD moving outside those boundaries. They purchased it expecting very specific kind of platforming and collecting and it instead offered fruit salad of different genres and playstyles. And to their credit, that is valid reason to be upset. But for everyone who started with YotD there was no such expectation and it usually ends up being their favourite from the franchise as far as I've seen. As a kid I loved all the minigames and different characters. They made it feel like I hit the jackpot and got multiple games crammed into that one disc and the constant switching between all those different characters kept the experience feeling fresh from start to finish. I don't remember ever thinking "please, just let me go back to charging and firebreathing, this is so boring!" barring maybe the Haunted Swamp Sheila minigame. To me it's the best game in the franchise but I can see why people think it's mediocre Spyro game. Oh and to the side rant about the 4th game, I also like it. I think it's solid foundation for a Spyro game, it's just not finished. They had bunch of content planned they had to leave out, the game is poorly optimized and at times it looks kinda hideous visually. All of those things could have been fixed in better circumstances but as far as I've understood the development of that game was total chaos due to large number of reasons. Without all those troubles it could have been 7-8/10 spyro game that was a bit uninspired but good enough purchase for the fans who wanted more spyro gameplay.

Year of the Dragon was peak. I played the pirated version back in the day and beat the game uncountless times, even with the bugs caused by anti-piracy measures, the game was extremely fun. After several years, i played the Greatest Hits version on emulator and i finally watched the endings and collected everything.

13:45 - I miss when cartoony games (generally no humans) were essentially the biggest part of AAA. We still have examples of it, Minecraft is certainly not all about realism, but it is less common these days, especially outside Nintendo.

What's weird is I remember playing Spyro 1 and it having analogue controls. It probably had something to do with the most up to date version that came with the collector's bundle they used to have for the three games at the time.

Hey, about the Police. Copeland for me is what made the Police exciting. His drumming, which is inspired by reggae, is so dynamic and unexpected that it is one of the reasons why as a kid the Police were my favourite band. They are NOT metal in the slightest although I know a metalhead like you can enjoy other types of music. If you check them out probably don't do it with Syncronicity, their last album. Its very 80s if you know what I mean. Next To You, So Lonely, One World, Demolition Man, Hungry For You, Syncronicity II, Roxanne and specially Cant Stand Losing You and Regatta de Blanc live are their best rockers in my opinion. Also, if you want to hear the worst / funniest shit they've ever done, check out Mother. Holy fuck balls. Sorry if I rambled too much.
