Darlington Football Club used to be a football league club until their sad demise & liquidation in the early 2000s.
I visited all their old stadium sites (including the Darlington Arena) which ultimately bankrupted them.
They're now a non league club aiming to get back to the EFL!

Great video mate . As a Darlo fan , I think all Darlo fans appreciate you taking time to make such a video about us . The last 10 years have been the most enjoyable years I have experienced in the 7 different decades I have followed the club 70s upwards so its not all doom and gloom . As you may now be aware we did not actually go bankrupt . One of the most pleasing things is that wethe fans/owners paid off all the debt owed after the administration . Any way great video that I believe all darlo fans will enjoy . Josh Charles Post about what happened is pretty accurate . We had to play about 6 seasons away from darlo in a neighbouring town 11 miles away called Bishop Auckland when we won those promotions . Our journey back has stalled slightly but its been great so far and it will continue,which is the important thing We'll done any way on the video .

Good video but just want to point out a couple of inaccuracies, Darlington didn’t officially go bust, the fans formed a new limited company (Darlington 1883 ltd) and raised enough money to buy X amount of the clubs assets such as the rights to the crest and the existing debt, ex chairman Raj Singh then refused to hand over the footballing share/golden share or whatever it’s called which included the rights to the clubs name and league placement, meaning that the FA then treated us as a “new club” and demoted us to the Northern League, if we truly were a new club then surely we wouldn’t have taken on the old debt and paid it off? Also the old Feethams site has 2 or 3 streets named after former players. Attendances at the arena we’re mainly around the 3.5K mark, over 5K for a handful of seasons and only eventually fell to just over 2k during our relegation seasons. Dropping out of the football league wasn’t a gradual process either, we were sitting pretty in the top 3 throughout the 08/09 season and were suddenly plunged into administration, after a points deduction we fell outside of the playoff places and started the next season with a team of kids and journeymen, I’m half certain we held or still hold a record for the most players used in one season that year? After finishing dead last we went on to win the FA trophy in our first season in the Conference, fast forward another year and we went back into administration which eventually let to the demotion. On another note, the “new” ground shown in this video isn’t our permanent home, we are leasing and ground share with a local rugby club DRFC, it was recently announced that we are in the process of securing funding and land to build a new permanent home, a much more sensible 5-8k capacity ground within the town, see the news article here…. www.gazettelive.co.uk/news/teesside-news/darlington-fc-move-new-stadium-24016699.amp Anyways, enjoyed the video just thought I’d stick my two pence in 👍

I lived in Darlington for a year due to work reasons, which happened to be their relegation season from the Football League. I've been to the odd game there and it was just weird to see such a big ground with so few fans inside. Fans I spoke to told me that George Reynolds thought that once he built the new ground, they would attract fans from Newcastle, Sunderland, Middlesbrough etc. He was clearly not realistic at all and obviously that never happened. But that's why he built a 25K stadium. Their fans I spoke to in that year made clear they hated that ground & Reynolds. And I remember a few telling me: "the stadium will be the death of us". They were right...

You are extremely so right regarding one of my favourite respective English clubs Darlington which was quite a famous club in the English Football League system where they have won some titles and being competitive in the cup competitions but the idea of the new stadium really made them to suffer till being in a bankruptcy,good friend!!!I fully hope that the revitalised club would bring the glory days to themselves in near future and am planning to watch all the respective English Non League matches which included Darlington's from next season onwards,good friend!!!🙏

Enjoyed the video, thanks, as a Darlo fan I had a season ticket for many years in the West Stand at Feethams from the late 1960s onwards as they battled around mostly in the then 4th Division, but in latter years the pitch, being close to the River Skerne, had serious problems with water-logging, I remember at one time they even imported 1000s of worms to try and aerate the soil, but sadly the worms drowned! This was part of the reason they needed a new ground, plus the football ground was only rented from the Cricket Club. The local businessman who took over the club, George Reynolds, had high ambitions of taking Darlington to Division 1 in 4 years and I believe it was he who built the new stadium with that in mind, but the football didn't improve and the new spacious stadium was sterile compared to nicely compact Feethams so the atmosphere, with only a couple of thousand in the place, was virtually non-existent. Plus Mr Reynolds was a man with a colouful reputation and wasn't well liked in the local council who, as I remember, prevented him from using the 'Reynolds Arena' for other purposes like events, concerts, boot sales etc which he hoped would supplement the income. Great example of fan ownership now though!

Thanks for the interesting video. My son joined the Darlo development centre at a young age - just as the club problems were starting to hit. I remember going to a match that was designated as a "benefit" event. Come in your club colours. Remember nothing about the match (other than I think Darlo lost), but remember meeting another Owls fan who was very pleased I'd attended, the kids got on the local TV news, was impressed by the size of the car park, and the stadium appeared impressive but was only half finished inside. Seem to recall that there were some dodgy characters somewhere in the background at that time. (Isn't there always!)

I remember Darlington getting relegated in 1988/89 I believe. Then you competed with Barnet in 1989/90 for promotion to Division 4 of the Football league and were successful. Barnet actually got promotion the following season, 1990/91. I actually went to their last game in 1990/91, they won 5-1 at Fisher Athletic. Darlington played some great stuff under Brian Little back then, it's a shame for Darlington that he left. I wonder if promotion to Division 2 could have happened if he'd stayed??

Living between Stockton and Darlington we would be in the village pub on Saturday lunchtime and at 2pm we would set off to either Darlo or The Boro depending on who was at home that week. At Darlo we would get in just before kick off and wait by the half way line to see which they kicking so see which end to go and stand, either the open end or the 'Tin Shed' backing on the cricket ground ... the Tin Shed being the one relocated to the new ground. At half time you would change ends although you didn't need to go round the cricket pitch. Incidentally the Darlo stadium announcer in those days was a certain Radio Tees DJ 'Me' Mark Page... I wonder what he's doing these days.... I think it's 14 years apparently

We didnt have to walk around the cricket pitch to change ends. Only had to navigate the cricket ground to enter/leave the football ground. The away fans were often in the corner of the Polam end and part of the West Stand depending on size of opposition travelling fanbase.(Carlisle always travelled well) The only fans that could change ends were the home fans. You could walk around the rear of the East stand from the Tin Shed to the part of the Polam end allocated for home support. Brilliant ground, some fantastic memories of Feethams before i moved away from the North East.

HITC Sevens did an in-depth video on Darlington and how the club was destroyed by George Reynolds building that big monument to his own ego, his lunatic vision of getting Darlington into the Premiership in just five years and his even more lunatic vision that he could approach football the same way as his bargain kitchen countertop business, and the club's re-emergence as a fan-owned phoenix organisation. I think one of the problems was that the Arena was located outside the town and off any bus lines, so supporters had to drive there to get to matches and that helped depress attendance. The fact that building a 25,000 seat venue for a fourth-tier club was insane to begin with, combined with the depressing sight of playing matches inside a mostly empty stadium, definitely did not help matters at all. I've thought several times of what I would have done if I had owned that club. Yes, they did have to have a new ground. For all its legacy and character, Feetham's day was done. The facilities had become very run down over the years, there was no room for expansion and the field drainage was terrible. It would not have been worth the effort or expense in trying to modernise the place. For myself, I'd have tried to find a site that was accessible to public transportation and large enough to accommodate an expandable venue. I'd have built a far more modest 5000-8500 capacity stadium with space to add additional stands if conditions warranted such expansion. But my imperatives would have been for a facility that wouldn't run to astronomical construction or maintenance costs, with modern accommodation for the teams playing there, and providing a pleasant place for fans. I'd have had studies done on the expected attendances and the league conditions and chosen a stadium plan reflecting those factors before having one ounce of concrete poured.

It's like the architects were given the order 'make the housing estate as bland as you can, lads' They couldn't even name a street after the old stadium it's like they're embarrassed of their own club. Weird

England and Scotland have beautiful old stadiums. I simple can't get my head around that clubs move to new soulless places. Look at arsenal or west ham, Southampton. And now even Chelsea and Everton are thinking about moving I believe? Goodison park! What is more beautiful than Goodison?! I guess you have to be an outsider to see the beauty.
@maccgordon8310
@maccgordon8310 2 жыл бұрын
No, Evertonians do appreciate Goodison Park and will be sad to leave at the end of next season. The main reason for the move is that two of the stands (Bullens Road built for £30K in 1926 & Gwladys Street built for £50K in 1938) need replacing. However the footprint is too small being surrounded by a church, a school & terraced houses. The fan consultations took years and all are on board. Everton In The Community has sorted the legacy use of Goodison Park & you can watch videos of the new ground taking shape. A lot of thought has been put into the architecture to avoid the mistakes of 'soulless places'. Only time will tell.

Hereford are a fan-owned phoenix club too. Hereford Utd went out of business in 2014. They still play in the same ground though and it's an old beauty, I'm sure you'll like it. Hereford is a nice place to stroll around too.

Great Video, few pieces of mis interpreted data. We did not go bust, the fans bought the rights, but had to wait to buy the history. The FA treated us as a new club. We have had our fair share of great players Pickford, Schmiechiel, Dan Burn, Stockdale, to name a few. We also shared Bishop Auklands Ground for a few years whilst we established ourselves as a club and made plans for this new ground

George Reynolds was very ambitious but I suppose it’s a good lesson in the fact that supporters don’t necessarily make great owners, although at first you could see what he was trying to accomplish in hindsight should probably have stuck to safe cracking

You cannot compare Darlington to Hull! Hull is a far bigger City with no other big team anywhere close to it (Leeds Utd been 50 miles away). Darlington is a small place with massive teams fairly close to it.

It was always going to end badly. I remember listening to a radio interview with George Reynolds whist the new stadium was being built. This is while they were still at Feethams. Reynolds was asked about the situation regarding low crowds and his reply was ''football is easy you build a big stadium, win all of your matches and put bums on seats and progress through the leagues'' I thought at the time he was delusional the guy was a nutter. Ex Con and was not scared to get the heavies onto people who said things he did not like.

A video on Kingstonian and the way they lost their ground due to unscrupulous owners would be great. Chelsea Women play at the ground, Kingsmeadow, now. AFC Wimbledon played there for ages as well. The ground was opened for the start of the 1989/90 season and it was one of the best Non League grounds in the country at the time. Up the K's!!

Myb he was thinking Championship , Premier League unrealistic in my view & most definitely unsustainable but myb that was his thinking. It's one thing being ambitious but you need to be realistic in what you can achieve I have concerns about Queens Park here in Scotland & where they are heading I honestly believe Queens Park could end up in liquidation further down the line as Willie Haughey The owner has a negative history when he has been involved in football he was on the old Celtic board when they nearly went in to liquidation in 1994 & he was part of the Consortium involved in running Livingston the first time they went in to admission buy over spending I can see the same kind of problems further down the line for Queens Park. Keep Safe.

The mind boggles! You'd need a third of the population of the town in order to fill that ground. It's probably the most sparsely populated area of the country as well so there's literally nothing anywhere close. How on earth could you expect to fill even 10k of that?

Gretana in the SPL is what got me interested into how the British football system works. I am an American sports fan. My teams always finished last but we’re still in MLB and NFL. They where incentivized to have poor seasons to be able to draft the best prospects.

Alan Shields Hamilton South Lanarkshire Scotland. I am a big fan of North American team sports sometimes the start times of games can be an issue time difference wise. N.F.L Steelers , N.H.L Rangers , N.B.A Bulls , M.L.B Mets & M.L.S Sounders. Been following North American Sports since 1993 but took more of an interest since 1996 when I went to Super Bowl XXX in Arazona with my Dad I was 12 comeing up for 13 at the time I am now 40 comeing up for 41. personally love the way the system works in North American Sports but it would never ever work in Europe sadly. Closer to home I follow Pollok F.C , Carlisle United & in terms of The Premier League I have been a Chelsea fan since 1996 I follow Ice Hockey here in the U.K Glasgow Clan & Paisley Pirates are my teams Clan are a fully pro team & Pirates are a junior team. Keep Safe.

Not a Darlington supporter but... I was at the game Barrow 3-0 Darlington, when they were in administration and it was thought that might be their last game around a thousand Darlington supporters turned up for that away game. Unheard of at the time. If buyers were not found that was supposed to be it!. I can't remember but i think they played on for a bit, but it was their last season as the original Darlington. To any Darlington supporters, Barrow that you played that season made it back to the football league after 42 years. Football is a funny game, linked to off field events and developmentsas well as on field achievements. It might be a little harder now as more (recenly) relegated clubs are all trying to get back. It can be done, I think it's why we love (live) the game. Anything is possible until the final whistle.

I remember sitting in my local park in Cheltenham years ago and the the Darlington team bus rolled up so they could train before the match with Cheltenham pretty sure Marco Gabbiadini was playing for them would have been around 98-2000 I think. I now live and Worcester and St George's lane the home of Worcester city has become houses as well sad because they once beat Liverpool in the cup there. For a while Worcester didn't have a home and went on the road to kiddi and then Bromsgrove but they're finally home in Worcester at claines lane.
