Getting into recovery is a process, which is outlined in the Stages of Change From Addiction To Recovery. This video will help you understand what to expect in the process of getting into recovery. From Denial to long term recovery, these are the stages that each person goes through.

Getting into recovery requires major life changes that come as a series of steps one slowly proceeds through as they determine they have a problem, it needs to change, and what they have to do to change it. This process can often play out in increments of progress and relapse that are difficult to connect into a discernible pattern. Though steps of change are often very blurry in practice, they can be broken apart into understandable blocks or stages. This is known as the stages of change model and is taught in many counseling schools (01:12). This model applies not just to becoming free from addiction but also to any major life change.
this doesn't just apply to drugs and alcohol but is a model for all life changes.
Stage 1: Pre-contemplation 02:00
-Also known as denial. This is a very early stage in the change process.
Stage 2: Contemplation 02:35
-The "thinking about it" stage. This is the first time the person entertains the idea they may have a problem.
Stage 3: Preparation 03:25
-This is where a person starts to consider the different options available to them and begins to learn more about what change entails.
Stage 4: Action 06:08
-This is when people start actually taking steps to change. They may set little goals for themselves to maintain or strategize to reduce their drug consumption. This is a bargaining state and involves lots of trial and error.
Stage 5: Maintenance phase 08:40
-This stage is all about maintaining the changes a person has made. There is more action involved in this stage than the name implies. Maintaining sobriety is work!
Bonus stage 6: Relapse 09:05
-Some like to consider this as a necessary stage of change in addiction while some view it as implicit permission for someone to relapse (like a "get out of jail free" card). I don't like to think of this as an actual stage someone must go through but it's good to keep in mind how prone a former addict is to relapse so as not to overreact.

I like this video, but I'm wondering what stage comes after the relapse phase? I feel like I've kinda been stuck there myself. I started to question my drinking a year and a half ago and personally witnessed myself going through each of those stages. I think I'm stuck in the relapse one 😅🤞

I don't see the point to details all those stages,. There are many videos about this, but it seems a bit artificial to me. You can easily jump from one stage to the other, quit cold turkey, or "regress" to the beginning or previous stages, etc. It's maybe more useful for marketing techniques, to hook the client ? Addiction are often replaced by another. Those who have an active life, good relationships and feel well in their head are less prone to become addicted. So when you want to quit drugs, alcohol, etc you usually need to fill a void, and replace your addiction with an activity, a passion !

Ughhhh those statements are accurate. As who is an addict going through the process currently.

I agree that you need to fill that void. You need to fill up all that time you used to spend using and recovering. You need a new hobby or passion to excite you and fire you up.

I have a very specific question for you. I am an LMSW and the way I read the action stage is that it occurs within 6 months (ish) of starting the new behavior. My supervisor tells me that you are in preparation until you have been sober (for example) for 6 months, then the action begins. What do you think?

I've never heard those timelines before.

@@cynsap1 I think that when you are taking real steps toward getting sober, you are in the action stage. I’ve never heard of any time limits. 🤷🏻‍♀️
