This is true. And the QB Steve DeBerg gave Bear's defense fits for a couple of years. And James Wilder ran hard against us. He actually had 166 yards rushing in this game.

The Bears allowed 28 points in this game. After this, they played 9 more home games (7 regular season plus 2 in the postseason), where they allowed a grand total of 49 points, or an average of just over 5 points per game. And in their final 6 home games, the Bears allowed one touchdown Just goes to show how dominant that defense was

Just know that this was Walter Payton’s ELEVENTH season in the league, and he had over 2000 total yards. 5’10” 200 pounds, which is honestly generous when you see him in person. He wasn’t very big, but he played like he was. How many RB’s play 13 full seasons now, and are still at the top of the league in production, all the way through their career. He was a special player.

Bears defense as great as it was. Some people forget we stumbled on defense out the gate. And very unbearlike..we scored points. Tampa gave us all we could handle twice. Steve DeBerg always played well against the Bears. And James Wilder ran wild in this one. 27 carries 166 yds and a TD. Thankfully the Bears Defense was great when it had to be in this game. They nearly beat the 11-5 Rams but fell 31-27. The Bucs also lost to the 11-5 Pats 32-14. The Bears played the Rams for the NFC Championship. The Dolphins played the Pats for the AFC Championship. The ‘85 Bears were a great team. But let’s not forget that they were the class of a very bad, very crowded NFC Central Division. The Yucks, Packers, Vikings, and Lions had a combined record of 24-40 in 1985, and none of them even came close to a playoff berth that season. Again, I’m not trying to take anything away from the Bears, but timing had a lot to do with the magnitude of their success. The 46 Defense took the league by storm in 1985. But by ‘86, it was pretty much obsolete. Their back to back shutouts in the NFC playoffs were impressive. But if New England hadn’t upset Miami in the AFC Championship, Super Bowl XX might’ve had a much different outcome.
